In the gallery of public figures who contributed to the development of Las Vegas we should also have an architect. Martin Stern Jr. is the one who contributed to the emergence of some famous casinos. In addition, he was involved in the development projects of more than 25 existing locations.

From movies to architecture

Born in 1917 in New York, Martin felt since early childhood that he has an affinity for drawing. He fructified this talent, and during the ‘ 30s he ended up in Los Angeles where he began to work as a drawer for the movies produced by Hollywood. He soon realized that this is not his true purpose and becomes an apprentice in the mysteries of architecture.

The first buildings bearing his mark were three „Ship’s” cafes built in vivid colors in Los Angeles. They symbolized the onset of a new futuristic style in architecture. But his notoriety started to amplify once he became involved the construction of Las Vegas.

Large projects

In 1953 he confidently begins his work as an architect, being part of the commission that was designing the Sahara Casino. His initial contribution was minor: only one room, small in height, which was part of the building. In time, he had returned several times at this casino, implementing expansion projects, including a 14-storey tower, the biggest construction of that time.

Stern was the man behind the tower built for the Sands Hotel in 1964, a project which was part of its expansion and was completed in 1967. The Tower has become a popular attraction in Las Vegas until its demolition in 1996.

The first project to which he  had contributed from the outset was the Sahara Tahoe Casino, opened in 1965. Satisfied with his work, the owner of the complex has worked with Stern at other projectsas well. His success was growing and he began to have more and more collaborators for its projects. One of them was Kirk Kerkorian, the owner of the Flamingo brand. The two have collaborated on the construction of the great International Hotel, which had over 1,500 rooms.

The creator of the casino resort concept

In fact, with the rise of International Hotel, Martin Stern Jr., created a new concept in the gaming industry: casino resorts. The huge complex contained various facilities: Casino, facilities for conferences and conventions, hotel rooms, restaurants and other useful services to their customers. Casino resorts became a model for the next generation of architects in the design of casinos around the world.

His projects were continued with the construction of the King’s Castle in Lake Tahoe, as well as extensions of rooms designed for Harrah’s Reno and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe (the first tower-shaped hotel).

The Father of MGM Grand

Another important project for which he worked was the emergence of the MGM Grand Casinos from Las Vegas and Reno. Stern has originally designed for the building in Las Vegas, a complex with 2,100 rooms. In 1980 there was a fire which destroyed part of the building, so the one to draw a large part of Las Vegas has reshaped the project and added one more tower to it, which led to the casino to a new level. He also made the sketches of the MGM Grand Casino in Reno, which later changed its name into the Reno Hilton, and now it is known as the Grand Sierra Resort.

Alongside the emerging casino resorts, Stern also worked on expanding other locations: Riviera, Stardust, Aladdin, Holiday Inn, El Rancho etc. His latest projects are linked to Atlantic City, a city where he designed the Playboy and Showboat resorts, but also contributed to the expansion of Harrah’s Marina.

Martin Stern Jr. passed away in 2001 and remained in the memory of Las Vegas as the drawer of the city. He was the person who managed to turn imagination into futuristic buildings that have become symbols of the City of Lights.

În galeria personalităților care au contribuit la dezvoltarea orașului Las Vegas ar trebui să existe și un arhitect. Martin Stern Jr. e persoana care și-a adus aportul la apariția unor cazinouri celebre. În plus, a fost implicat în peste 25 de proiecte de extindere ale unor locații deja existente.

De la filme la arhitectură

Născut în 1917 la New York, Martin a simțit încă de mic că are o înclinație spre desen. Și-a fructificat acest talent, iar în anii ’30 a ajuns în Los Angeles unde a început să lucreze ca desenator în cadrul filmelor produse la Hollywood. Realizează curând că aceasta nu e adevărata lui menire și începe să își facă ucenicia în tainele arhitecturii.

Primele clădiri pe care și-a pus amprenta au fost trei cafenele ”Ship’s” construite în culori vii în Los Angeles. Ele au simbolizat debutul unui nou stil futuristic în arhitectură. Notorietatea lui avea să crească, însă, odată ce se va implica în construcţia Las Vegasului.

Proiecte mari

În 1953 își începe activitatea de arhitect în forță, fiind în comisia care proiecta cazinoul Sahara. Contribuția lui inițială e mică: doar o cameră de mică înălțime care avea să facă parte din clădire. În timp, el a revenit de mai multe ori la acest cazinou cu proiecte de extindere puse în practică, printre care și un turn de 14 etaje, cea mai mare construcție din acel moment.

Stern a fost omul din spatele turnului construit pentru Sands Hotel în 1964, un proiect care a avut parte de extindere și a fost finalizat în 1967. Turnul a devenit o atracție în Las Vegas până la demolarea sa, în 1996.

Primul proiect în care și-a adus contribuția încă de la început a fost Sahara Tahoe, cazino deschis în 1965. Mulțumit de activitatea lui, patronul complexului a colaborat cu Stern și în alte proiecte. Succesul lui era în creștere și găsea tot mai mulți colaboratori pentru proiectele sale. Unul dintre ei a fost Kirk Kerkorian, cel care deținea marca Flamingo. Cei doi au colaborat la apariția celui mai mare hotel: International, cu peste 1500 de camere.

Creatorul conceptului de casino-resort

De fapt, odată cu apariția hotelului International, Martin Stern Jr. a creat un nou concept în industria jocurilor de noroc: casino-resorturile. Complexul uriaș cuprindea facilități variate: cazino, spații pentru conferințe și convenții, camere de hotel, restaurante și alte servicii utile clienților. Casino-Resorturile au devenit un model pentru următoarea generație de arhitecți în proiectarea cazinourilor din întreaga lume.

Proiectele sale au continuat cu construcția King’s Castle din Lake Tahoe, dar și extinderi de camere proiectate pentru Harrah’s Reno și Harrah’s Lake Tahoe (pentru ultima construind primul hotel în formă de turn).

Părintele MGM Grand

Un alt proiect important pentru care a lucrat a fost apariția cazinourilor MGM Grand din Las Vegas și Reno. Stern a desenat inițial, pentru clădirea din Las Vegas, un complex cu 2100 de camere. În 1980 a avut loc un incendiu care a distrus o parte din clădire, așa că cel care a desenat o bună parte din Las Vegas a remodelat proiectul și a adăugat în plus un turn, ceea ce a dus cazinoul la un nou nivel. El a făcut și schițele cazinoului MGM Grand din Reno, care mai târziu își va schimba numele în Reno Hilton, iar acum e cunoscut ca Grand Sierra Resort.

În paralel cu casino-resorturile noi apărute, Stern lucra și la extinderea altor locații: Riviera, Stardust, Aladdin, Holiday Inn, El Rancho etc. Ultimele sale proiecte sunt legate de Atlantic City, oraș în care a proiectat complexurile Playboy și Showboat, dar a contribuit și la extinderea Harrah’s Marina.

Martin Stern Jr. s-a stins din viață în 2001 și a rămas în amintirea Las Vegasului drept desenatorul orașului. El a fost persoana care a reușit să transforme imaginația sa în clădiri futuristice ce au devenit simboluri ale Orașului Luminilor.
