Even though the Newton project achieved most of its objectives, it continues to develop, heading towards its 4.0 version. We will see in the next material what’s new on this topic and in what other future projects is going to engage the general manager of Newton Slots, Dragoș Buriu.
How did the Newton project start?
When I entered the Newton project, I was coming out of a difficult period in my life and this project mobilized me quite a lot. Considering that I always thought of myself to be a competitive person, the launching of such a challenge was exactly what I wanted. The first period of time was focused on the sale of slot-machines on the Romanian market and then we started the Total Control and 3.0 Jackpot Project and thus the result was a total eclipse of our initial work. When I say eclipse, I don’t mean the financial component of the project, but only the appearance of the challenge, because the Newton Company initially came up with a rather crude software, one that was not quite fit for the needs of Romania.
When you say the needs of Romania, to what do you refer exactly?
There is a worldwide set of offerings for this specific service, some more expensive offers, other cheaper, some better, others are less good, and there is no clear and specific equation of the manner in which a clear assessment can be made. Any market obviously has its specificity, and in Romania, until recently, the need for a system of jackpot was one, namely to be in trend with your neighbor. Large companies, with experience in other markets have come and have implemented different Jackpot Systems in Romania, only that these systems should not be interpreted only as monitors connected to a computer. As I said, until recently the systems were required only because they were something new. Many operators have seen them as „life belts” when they realized that the offer of slots of a gaming room cannot be very different. Therefore, when Newton made its appearance on the Romanian market with its 2.0 Jackpot System, we realized that a rudimentary operating system with an installed application and a computer as big as a mini fridge, is not exactly what we wanted from the future of such a project.
What were your next steps?
As any project should start, we began with a market study. Fortunately, thanks to our knowledge, we could have access to specific people with a vast experience in the field. Because I respect experience, we went to each and one of those people and we have identified the vital components that would be a „must have” for the system to be created.
What are they and why are they important?
I can enumerate them if you wish, but in any case I will not have the claim to be exhaustive in respect of them. Therefore, we have evaluated the following components, which are necessary for a system to be respectable.
PORTABILITY. In a world which is in constant motion is necessary for a system to be accessible from any device. Under no circumstances the fact that you have an iPhone, Android, a Tablet, or a PC should not be a problem. The system must be accessible from anywhere.
SAFETY. Due to the fact that we used the 2.0 Newon Jackpot nucleus, the safety was tested for years. The data is encrypted with the same technique as when you make a payment by credit card. In the same way that banks take care of your money, Newton takes care of the data of their customers.
FLEXIBILITY. In my opinion here is where I had the largest contribution in this project. I managed to inoculate to the entire team that the partners we work with must come first, and that their needs should be our first concern when we begin our work day. I don’t want to seem exaggerated with what I say, but there were times when we worked even on Sundays night, if the need imposed such a sacrifice. We know that good work is not done easily and that extra minute, that extra inch, can make the difference between the 1st and the 2nd place. We know, too, that the names of those who lose are never remembered, but only of those who win. This was the philosophy that guided our efforts and I think it is so well imbedded that I don’t think anything can ever erase it.
I understood that you are part of the Advisory Board of ONJN, and that you have participated in drafting the regulations. Is the Newton System in accordance with the requirements of the Office?
First of all I would like for the following aspect to be very clearly understood. I attended the meetings of the Advisory Board as Vice President of AOPJNR and in no way as a representative of a company. Even during my visits to ONJN, I found out that one of our competitors on the market, was promoting the idea that the Office shall draw up the regulations for systems by taking their system as an example. Considering that all discussions are recorded and that the Office’s attitude on this matter is clear as they should not represent the interests of companies, but only of the Romanian State, I tell you very frankly that there is no more aberrant idea. However, although maybe I do not have the consent of part of the operators in Romania, personally I appreciate the openness of the ONJN in giving us a chance to explain the needs of the private sector. The openness they have showed makes me think that in Romania there are also things that happen as they should. However, to answer your question, the system is fully compliant with the requirements of the Office while it will have some specific needs that will not be difficult to implement.
I understand that you will retire. Why have you decided to take this step?
I would not call it a retirement, but mission accomplished. When I started working with Newton I did so assuming some targets, which have been met. I have created in Romania a team that can compete with any corporate team from around the globe. At this time the structure in Romania includes departments, not only paper, for each component of this business. In the coming months we will establish a Customer Care Department that will be focused only on solving eventual problems of the operators.
Why would the operators in Romania choose the Newton System?
Because we always want the best and I can say in all sincerity that Newton is the best system in Romania. I don’t know how many people have this information, but the ONJN’s need of having the means of game in the system constantly has transformed into a provision of the rules for the application of ORDINANCE 92, bringing to the attention of the operators the fact that this connection with each game may not be interrupted for a period exceeding 48 h, otherwise the operator concerned will have to stop the game. Therefore, the operators will understand how important it is to have a system that you can rely on, because you cannot afford to run a game stopped, when you have to pay a 3,000 euros fee for that game. We have already started a program of territorial efficiency, which will allow us to have a very short response time.
What functions are offered by the Newton System?
The Newton System is, as it was called by the visitors of our stand within the ICE Totally Gaming Exposition 2015, an „all in one” system. The system provides functions for the Jackpot, Happy Hour, Monitoring, Accounting, Security, Loyalty and Promotion. Basically, for those operators interested to develop their business, we offer the ideal online partner.
What are your plans for the future?
The future turns out to be a greater challenge. I am involved in a project that began in Germany. It’s about developing a new concept of slot machine that will completely revolutionize the gaming market worldwide. If things will go in the right direction, within 5 years you’ll see a completely changed world. There is a need for change that I have ignored and in which I believe so much that I’m willing to make the greatest steps in order to bring it to its rightful place. It will be a major surprise and I hope I will do my best for this challenge. Until then I will continue to be involved in implementing the plans of Newton and in this respect i would like to say to the operators who know me personally that I will always be right beside them.
What are Newton’s future plans?
The Newton project is developing. We are working intensively on a new system. What I can tell so far is that the project is named for 4.0 Newton and it will be something different comparing to what is currently present on the market in Romania. It will be the promoter of a new era in this industry, the project is focused on the ability of each user to be unique, providing the most flexible system. The desire for uniqueness implies the need for innovation. We will keep innovating as we did until now, offering impeccable business solutions.

Cum a început proiectul Newton?
Atunci când am intrat în proiectul Newton veneam după o perioadă dificilă din viața mea și acest proiect m-a mobilizat destul de mult. Având în vedere că m-am considerat întotdeauna o persoană competitivă, lansarea unei asemenea provocări a fost exact ceea ce îmi doream. Prima perioadă a fost axată pe vânzarea de slot-machine pe piața din România pentru ca apoi să demarăm proiectul Total Control și Jackpot 3.0 ce a eclipsat total activitatea noastră inițială. Când spun eclipsat, nu mă refer la componenta financiară a proiectului, ci doar la aspectul provocării pentru că inițial compania Newton a venit cu un software destul de brut și nu tocmai potrivit necesităților din România.
Când spuneți necesitățile din România, la ce anume vă referiți?
Există la nivel mondial o mulțime de oferte pentru acest serviciu specific, unele oferte mai costisitoare, altele mai ieftine, unele mai bune, altele mai puțin bune, neexistând o ecuație clară și concretă a modalității prin care se poate face o evaluare clară. Evident că orice piață are specificul ei, iar în România, până de curând, necesitatea unui sistem de jackpot era una singură, și anume de a fi în trend cu vecinul. Companiile mari, cu experiență pe alte piețe au venit și au implementat în România diferite sisteme jackpot, numai că aceste sisteme nu trebuie să fie interpretate doar ca niște monitoare conectate la un calculator. Așa cum vă spuneam, până de curând sistemele erau solicitate doar pentru că erau ceva nou. Mulți operatori au văzut în ele “un colac de salvare” atunci când au realizat că oferta de sloturi la nivelul unei săli nu poate fi foarte diferită. Așadar, când Newton și-a făcut apariția pe piața din România cu sistemul Jackpot 2.0, am realizat că un sistem rudimentar ce funcționează cu o aplicație instalată și un calculator cât un mini frigider, nu este tocmai ce îmi doresc de la viitorul unui asemenea proiect.
Care au fost următorii pași ?
Așa cum ar trebui să înceapă orice proiect, am început printr-un studiu de piață. Din fericire, datorită cunoștințelor din domeniu am putut avea acces la anumite persoane cu o vastă experiență în domeniu. Pentru că respect experiența, am mers la fiecare în parte și am identificat componentele vitale ce aveau să fie un “must have” pentru sistemul ce urma să îl creăm.
Care sunt acestea și de ce sunt ele importante?
Le pot enumera, dacă insistați, dar în niciun caz nu voi avea pretenția de a fi exhaustiv în privința lor. Așadar, am evaluat următoarele componente a fi necesare unui sistem respectabil.
PORTABILITATEA. Într-o lume aflată în continuă mișcare este necesar ca un sistem să fie accesibil de pe orice device. În niciun caz nu trebuie să fie o problemă că ai iPhone, Android, Tabletă sau PC. Sistemul trebuie să fie accesibil de oriunde.
SIGURANȚA. Datorită faptului că am folosit nucleul Newon Jackpot 2.0, siguranța a fost una testată în ani de zile. Datele sunt criptate cu aceeași tehnică ca atunci când efectuați o plată cu cardul. Așa cum băncile au grijă de banii dumneavoastră, așa are și sistemul Newton grijă de datele clienților săi.
FLEXIBILITATEA. Aici cred că am avut cel mai mare rol din tot acest proiect. Am reușit sa insuflu întregii echipe faptul că trebuie ca partenerii cu care lucrăm să fie pe primul loc și nevoile lor să fie prima noastră grijă atunci când ne începem ziua de lucru. Nu vreau să pară exagerat ceea ce spun, dar am avut momente în care am lucrat și duminica noaptea atunci când nevoia a impus un asemenea sacrificiu. Știm că niciun lucru bun nu se realizează ușor și că acel minut în plus, acel centimetru în plus poate face diferența dintre locul 1 și locul 2. Știm, de asemenea, că niciodată nu este reținut numele celor care pierd, ci doar al celor care câștigă. Aceasta a fost filozofia care ne-a ghidat eforturile și o consider atât de bine întipărită încât nu cred că ceva o mai poate șterge vreodată.
Am înțeles că ați făcut parte din Consiliul Consultativ al ONJN și că ați participat la elaborarea normelor. Este sistemul Newton conform cu cerințele oficiului?
În primul rând aș dori să fie foarte clar înțeles următorul aspect. Am participat la ședintele Consiliului Consultativ în calitate de vice președinte al AOPJNR și în niciun caz în calitate de reprezentant al unei companii. Chiar în timpul vizitelor mele la sediul ONJN am aflat că unul dintre concurenții noștri promova pe piață ideea că oficiul elaborează normele cu privire la sisteme luând ca exemplu sistemul acestora. Vă spun foarte sincer că nu există o idee mai aberantă având în vedere că toate discuțiile sunt înregistrate și că din atitudinea oficiului reiese clar că nu trebuie reprezentate interesele unei companii, ci doar ale statului Român. Totuși, deși poate nu sunt în asentimentul unei părți a operatorilor din România, personal apreciez deschiderea ONJN în a ne da șansa să explicăm nevoile sectorului privat. Deschiderea pe care aceștia au arătat-o mă determină să cred că sunt și lucruri în România care se întâmplă așa cum este firesc. Totuși ca să vă răspund la întrebare, sistemul este în totalitate conform cu cerințele oficiului deși acesta va avea câteva necesități specifice pe care nu va fi dificil să le implementăm.
Înțeleg că vă retrageți. De ce ați hotărât să faceți acest pas?
Nu i-aș spune retragere, i-aș spune misiune îndeplinită. Atunci când am început colaborarea cu Newton am făcut-o asumându-mi niște obiective care au fost îndeplinite. Am creat în România o echipă ce poate concura cu orice echipă corporate de pe mapamond. În acest moment structura din România include departamente reale, nu pe hârtie, pentru fiecare componentă a acestui business. În lunile ce urmează vom înființa un departament de Customer Care ce se va axa doar pe rezolvarea eventualelor probleme ale operatorilor.
De ce ar alege operatorii din România sistemul Newton?
Pentru că întotdeauna ne dorim ce este mai bun și pot spune cu mâna pe inimă că sistemul Newton este cel mai bun sistem din România. Nu știu câte persoane au această informație însă nevoia ONJN de a avea în permanență mijloacele de joc prezente în sistem s-a transpus printr-o prevedere în normele de aplicare a OUG 92 ce aduce la cunoștință faptul că această conexiune cu fiecare mijloc de joc nu poate fi întreruptă pentru o perioadă mai mare de 48h, altfel operatorul în cauză va trebui să oprească jocul. Așadar, operatorii vor înțelege cât este de important să ai un sistem pe care te poți baza, deoarece nu îți poți permite să ții un joc oprit în condițiile în care trebuie să plătești 3000 euro taxă pentru el. Noi am demarat deja un program de eficientizare teritorială care ne va permite să avem un timp de răspuns foarte scurt.

Sistemul Newton este, așa cum a fost numit de către vizitatorii standului nostru din cadrul expoziției ICE Totally Gaming 2015, un sistem “all in one”. Care sunt planurile dumneavoastră de viitor?
Viitorul se dovedește a fi o și mai mare provocare. Am fost angrenat într-un proiect ce a luat naștere în Germania. Este vorba despre dezvoltarea unui concept nou de slot machine ce va revoluționa complet piața jocurilor de noroc la nivel mondial. Dacă lucrurile vor merge în direcția bună în maximum 5 ani veți vedea o lume complet schimbată. Există o nevoie de schimbare pe care eu nu am ignorat-o și în care cred atât de mult încât sunt dispus să fac pași cât mai mari pentru a o duce acolo unde îi este locul. Va fi o surpriză de proporții și sper să fiu la înălțimea acestei provocări. Până atunci mă voi implica în continuare în a pune în aplicare planurile Newton și pe această cale le transmit operatorilor care mă cunosc personal că întotdeauna voi fi alături de ei.
Care sunt planurile de viitor pentru Newton ?
Proiectul Newton ia amploare. Se lucrează intens la un nou sistem. Ce vă pot spune deocamdată este că proiectul poartă numele de Newton 4.0 și va fi altceva comparativ cu tot ce există în momentul de față pe piața din România. Va fi promotorul unei noi ere în această industrie, proiectul fiind axat pe posibilitatea fiecărui utilizator de a fi unic, oferind cel mai flexibil sistem. Dorința de unicitate aduce implicit nevoia de inovație. Vom continua să inovăm așa cum am făcut-o și până acum, oferind soluții impecabile de business.
