Our series goes on with a new episode about the secrets of the Sin City. But in fact, how much do we know about Vegas? The enigmatic city will always keep hold secrets, raise questions and controversies. Of course, it ranks one of the first places in top of famous world destinations, but what about the amazing unknown facts of Vegas, like a secret military base and secret flights or the existence of a black book containing a list of people with a bad reputation who are banned to come to casinos in Vegas. These are some secrets that most people don`t know for sure about Vegas.
Drinking alcohol in public
In any American movie related to Vegas we can watch people drinking alcohol in the streets of the city. Is this just a myth, a movie scene or reality? The fact is that people can drink alcohol in the Vegas streets, but there are some rules about it. The drinking can may not be opaque or made of metal, so beer doses are out of question. Usually the selling man may tell you that you can`t buy a certain drink if you are willing to drink it in the street. At the same time it is prohibited to walk holding alcohol at less than 500 meters from schools, hospitals or sacred places. So, be careful where you enjoy your drink!
Prostitution is not legal in Vegas
For a long time there was a confusion among tourists regarding this topic. Legal prostitution is one of the facts that attracts tourists in the state of Nevada. But what people do not know is that this activity is legal only in towns with less than 400 000 people. Why are we talking this limit? When the regulation was adopted, Vegas wanted to keep brothels away and it was the only city with more than 400 000 people, so it remained out of this regulation`s area. But why did the city that states as slogan “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” want to keep legal prostitution away? Vegas was meant to be a pleased destination for any kind of tourist, regardless any criteria, even religion or confession. It wasn`t meant to keep away by means of some activities in the city any kind of visitors. Of course that doesn`t mean that in the city of sin, there is no illegal prostitution, but authorities are permanently doing their job regarding this issue. In spite of issues like infantile prostitution or people traffic that Vegas has to fight against, there are no legal brothels in Vegas, although these can be found just outside Vegas.
Janet Airlines
Nevada is hosting the most secret American military base, known as Area 51, placed in a dried lake in the middle of Nevada. Until this year the government refused to publicly acknowledge this base and the rumor is that there are alien spaceships. Although this base objective has not been made public yet, it is known to be contracting many civil people, many of them being from Vegas. For employees access there is a secret airline terminal on the McCarran International Airport, where special secret unmarked 737s airplanes are meant to serve the base. This airline is unofficially known as “Janet”, due to the sign through which planes identify themselves. The base was rumored to be used for testing secret airplanes prototypes, but apparently this was just an alibi, the real purpose being secret.
Gambling is prohibited just outside Vegas
Undoubtedly Vegas is the city of gambling, with slots that can be found in any supermarket or gas station. That is why it sounds hilarious how gambling can be banned only 40 km away from Vegas. Boulder City, a small city, the last stop before Vegas, was established as community in 1931 and the population was made of the workers from Hoover Dam. Officials from this city thought that it is better to keep gambling away from the city in order to keep workers away from spending their time and money on gambling instead of working. In 1960 this regulation was renewed but it stayed the same, even today legalizing gambling in this area seems to be difficult because of the officials and residents resistance.
MGM fire
The numerous big resorts on the Strip in Vegas host thousands of guests each day. That is why a very important issue for resorts from the beginning was to implement a very efficient preventive and fighting fire system. Sadly, at the beginnings, first casinos in Vegas were not interested in this system such as the ones from today, when hotels have sprinkler system all over the building without any exception. That is why the devastating fire from 1980 from MGM Grand Hotel has ended up with 85 deaths and 679 injured people from a total of 5000 people who were inside the resort at the time. Most of them were forced to take the stairs to the upper floors in order to hesitate the killing fire from first floors, from where was difficult to be saved even with helicopters. This fire was an important one in the history of the U.S.A, having been the third most dramatic, because it has brought along with the event a new regulation of the fire code in U.S.A.
The black list
A state that has legalized gambling knows very well how important it is to save appearances if you don`t want to deal with new federal regulation. In the `60s, officials in Nevada were under the pressure of losing control of the influence of organizational crime on gambling in Vegas. The official answer to this pressure was to write a black list with the names of people knows to have broken the rules in casinos. This people were banned from entering, managing or owning a casino in Vegas. The black list is still available today, even though it is not taken very serious. People on the list can ask to be deleted from it in front of the Gaming Commission of Nevada, but once a name is on the list it is difficult to be erased and breaking the rule of not entering a casino is punished with over a year in jail. At the same time casinos that choose to tolerate people on the black list are risking to lose their license and apparently, celebrity doesn`t help – even Frank Sinatra has lost the license for his casino when the mob boss Sam Giancana visited his hotel. Today the black list has almost 66 names, the majority being people who usually fraud the game.
Vegas of segregation
Although it is the city of all possibilities and of all kinds of visitors, it is hardly believable that it was the city of intense segregation in the `50s, well known as The Mississippi of West for the separation and discrimination rules.
Although gambling was legalized in Vegas beginning with the `30s, and the activity was very intense in the area, the Afro – American population was living in the suburbs, being kept as far away as possible from the activity in the city. Once gamblers from South America, also black people, came to Vegas, they started to complain about how the Afro – Americans were treated and so this population was moved to the West part of Vegas. They were now allowed to work, but only for left out jobs and their life conditions were very poor, living in wretch huts without water. Discrimination phenomenon ended up in the city of lights from the beginning of 1960, when a protest against segregation took place in the region that has had a really big impact among officials, who have met protestants and after long debates, they gave up on discrimination regulations.
Unlimited shrimp cocktails and restricted drinks?
In Vegas the daily consumption of shrimps is the same quantity as in the hole United States, almost 2700 kg of shrimps. This is the favorite dish in Vegas, mainly at players tables, who prefer it probably for the spectacular prices that shrimp cocktails have.
Regarding limited alcohol consumption, the restriction is not for quantities but for the fact that a person can not order drinks in Vegas for more than three other people. So if you want to order for a large group, you can`t, regardless the place or hour.

Serialul nostru continuă cu un nou episod dedicat secretelor din Orașul Păcatului. Însă cât de multe ştim de fapt despre Las Vegas? Oraşul enigmatic va ascunde mereu secrete, va ridica dileme şi controverse. Desigur că este printre cele mai faimoase destinaţii din lume, dar ce putem spune despre aspectele uimitoare ale Vegas-ului, cum sunt o bază militară secretă şi zboruri secrete către aceasta sau existenţa unei “liste negre”, unde sunt trecute persoane cu reputaţia pătată, care nu pot intra în cazinourile de aici. Iată câteva aspecte absconse pe care lumea, cu siguranţă, nu le-a auzit despre această metropolă.
Consumul de băuturi alcoolice în public
În orice film american legat de Vegas, putem observa secvenţe cu personaje care beau alcool pe stradă în Vegas. Este doar un mit, o scenă de film sau realitatea? Adevărul este că în Vegas se poate consuma alcool pe stradă, însă există anumite reguli stricte. Recipientul cu băutură nu trebuie să fie opac sau de metal, deci cutiile de bere sunt excluse. Un alt aspect este că de obicei, comerciantul de la care iei băutura e posibil să te atenţioneze dacă ai sau nu voie să bei pe stradă şi să nu îţi vândă băutura, dacă este interzis. De asemenea, nu-ți este permis să circuli cu băutura în mână la mai puţin de 500 de metri de şcoli, spitale sau lăcaşuri de cult. Aşadar, ai grijă pe ce rute îţi savurezi băutura!
Prostituţia nu este legală în Las Vegas
O lungă perioadă de timp a existat o confuzie în rândul turiştilor legată de acest aspect. Unul dintre elementele care atrage turiştii în Nevada este faptul că acest stat permite prostituţia ca activitate legală. Dar ce nu ştie lumea este că această lege este valabilă doar în aşezări cu mai puţin de 400.000 de locuitori. De ce acestă limită? Pentru că atunci când legea a fost implementată, Las Vegas-ul a dorit să ţină bordelurile departe, iar oraşul jocurilor de noroc era singurul cu peste 400.000 de locuitori, rămânând în afara legii. Dar de ce oraşul despre care se spune că “Ce se întâmplă în Vegas, rămâne în Vegas”, și-a dorit să ţină departe prostituţia legală de zona sa? Orașul a fost gândit să devină o destinaţie pentru oricine, persoane de toate tipurile, indiferent de religie sau confesiune. Vegas-ul nu a vrut să excludă prin anumite activităţi practicate aici, anumite categorii de vizitatori. Desigur, asta nu înseamnă că în oraşul păcatului nu există prostituţie ilegală, însă autorităţile sunt în alertă permanent ca să combată fenomenul. În ciuda problemelor pe care le are cu prostituţia şi traficul de persoane, aici nu există bordeluri legale, deşi pe cele ilegale le găsești chiar la ieşirea din oraș.
Flota aeriană Janet
Statul Nevada este gazda celei mai secrete baze militare, cunoscută drept Area 51, situată într-un lac secat din inima statului. Guvernul a refuzat să facă publică existenţa acestei baze până anul acesta şi se zvoneşte că aici ar exista nave extraterestre. Probabil n-o să aflăm niciodată… Deşi obiectivul acestei baze nu este cunoscut, se ştie deja că aceasta contractează sute de civili, mulţi fiind chiar din Las Vegas. Pentru accesul la bază, există un terminal aerian secret pe Aeroportul International McCarran, pe care zboară avioane neînregistrate şi nesemnalate, special destinate transportului angajaţilor bazei din şi către Vegas. Această flotă secretă de avioane este neoficial cunoscută drept “Linia aeriană Janet”, datorită semnalelor prin care aeronavele se identifică. Baza este bănuită a fi folosită pentru a testa prototipuri pentru aeronave secrete, însă acesta a fost, se pare, doar un paravan, scopul activităţii de acolo fiind practic strict secret.
Gamblingul este interzis chiar în afara Vegasului
Las Vegas este indubitabil capitala jocurilor de noroc, cu sloturi plasate în orice supermarket sau benzinărie din oraş, deci ar putea părea hilar cum gamblingul este interzis la doar 40 de km distanţă de oraş. Boulder City este un orăşel mic, ultima oprire înainte de a ajunge în Vegas. Comunitatea a luat naştere în 1931 şi era formată din constructorii barajului Hoover. Oficialii federali s-au gândit că este mai bine să nu aducă jocurile de noroc aici, ca angajaţii să nu fie tentaţi să se oprească la aparatele de joc, în loc să ajungă la locul de muncă şi ca banii lor să nu ajungă să fie aruncaţi pe jetoane. Chiar şi astăzi legalizarea gamingului în zonă întâmpină rezistenţă din partea rezidenţilor.
Focul de la MGM
Marile resorturi de pe Strip găzduiesc la orice oră din zi sau noapte sute sau mii de oaspeţi. De aceea un aspect foarte important pentru aceste construcţii a fost încă de la începuturi implementarea unui sistem de prevenţie şi stingere a incendiilor de mare eficienţă. Din păcate, primele cazinouri de la începuturile Vegas-ului au omis să ţină cont de implementarea unor astfel de sisteme, aşa cum au astăzi hotelurile oraşului, cu robineţi dispuşi de-a lungul întregilor construcţii. De aceea, incendiul devastator din 1980 de la MGM Grand Hotel s-a soldat cu decesul a 85 de persoane şi 679 de răniţi, din 5000 de persoane cazate în resort la acel moment. Majoritatea persoanelor au fost nevoite să urce la etajele superioare pentru a evita întâlnirea fatală cu focul de la primele etaje, de unde a fost dificil să fie salvate cu elicopterele. Acest incendiu a fost considerat important în istoria Statelor Unite, fiind al treilea ca dramatism din SUA, deoarece a adus odată cu el un proiect de revizuire şi reimplementare a codului şi standardelor de combatere și prevenire a incendiilor.
Lista Neagră
Un stat care a legalizat gamblingul ştie foarte bine cât de important este să păstrezi aparenţele dacă nu doreşti noi reglementări federale. În anii `60, oficialii din Nevada erau sub presiunea de a pierde frâiele influenţei crimei organizate asupra activităţii cazinourilor din Vegas. Răspunsul oficialilor la această presiune a fost întocmirea unei liste negre, cu numele persoanelor cunoscute că ar fi încălcat regulile în locațiile de joc. Aceste persoane nu puteau manageria, deţine sau intra într-un cazinou din Vegas. Lista neagră există şi astăzi sub o forma mai voalată. Cei incluşi pe acestă listă pot cere să fie scoși de pe ea în faţa Comisiei de Gaming a Statului Nevada, însă odată intrat pe listă un nume, este greu de înlăturat iar încălcarea regulii de a nu intra în cazinouri este pedepsită cu mai mult de un an de închisoare. În acelaşi timp, cazinourile care sunt blânde faţă de cei interzişi, riscă să îşi piardă licenţa şi aparent, celebritatea nu salvează situaţia – Frank Sinatra a pierdut licenţa cazinoului său după ce interlopul Sam Giancana i-a vizitat hotelul. Astăzi lista conţine aproximativ 66 de nume, dintre care majoritatea sunt persoane care fraudează jocul.
Vegas-ul segregării
Deşi este oraşul tuturor posibilităţilor şi a tuturor tipurilor de vizitatori, pare greu de crezut că orașul norocului a fost spaţiul segregării intense din anii `50, cunoscut drept “ Mississippi din Vest”, datorită legilor separaţiei şi discriminării.
Deşi încă din anii `30, gamblingul a fost legalizat în Vegas şi activitatea era foarte intensă în zonă, populaţia afro–americană trăia iniţial la marginea oraşului şi era ţinută cât mai departe de activitatea din oraş. Odată cu venirea jucătorilor din sudul Americii, mulți dintre ei de culoare, s-au plâns de tratamentul primit de confraţii lor din Vegas şi astfel afro-americanii au fost stabiliţi în partea de Vest a oraşului. Puteau lucra, însă doar acele job-uri pe care nu le doreau alții, iar condiţiile lor de viaţă erau la fel de rudimentare, locuind în barăci mizere şi fără apă. Fenomenul discriminării a încetat în Oraşul Luminilor odată cu anul 1960, când a avut loc un marș împotriva segregării din zonă care a avut un impact puternic în rândul oficialilor care s-au întâlnit cu protestatarii şi după dezbateri prelungite au renunţat la reglementările care susţineau discriminarea faţă de afro-americani.
Cocktailuri de creveţi pe bandă rulantă şi băutură limitată?
În Vegas se consumă zilnic aceeaşi cantitate de creveţi cât în toate Statele Unite, aproximativ 2700 kg de creveţi. Acesta este cel mai consumat fel de mâncare, mai ales la mesele jucătorilor, care îi preferă probabil şi pentru cocktailurile de creveţi ce se vând la preţuri exorbitante.
În ce priveşte limitarea consumului de alcool, nu se interzice atât cantitatea, cât faptul că o persoană nu poate comanda în Vegas băuturi alcoolice pentru mai mult de trei alte persoane. Deci, dacă vrei să faci cinste la un grup mai mare de persoane, nu vei putea, indiferent de loc sau de oră.
