Well, an example that ideally combies all these is Willie Nelson, a name that might sound not familiar in the mainstream musical area, but an icon for the fans of the country genre, especially in the USA, and also for those who know the recent history of Vegas. Who is Nelson, how he became well-known through the music he sings, what are his ties with Vegas and what role did marijuana have in his life? Casino Inside has the answers for all these questions and will disclose them in the article below.
”Crazy”, ”Red Headed”, ”Stranger” or ”Stardust” – these are just a few of the hits that bewildered the fans of the country genre. All of them are part of Willie Nelson’s repertoire, as he has over 350 albums recorded, many more songs, all these during a career of over six decades. He made his reputation as an author, actor, but also as an activist, and the public acknowledgement for all these roles came also through many awards he received, but through public acclaims as well, with the latter a much more valuable recognition for an artist who treats his work and himself with utmost honesty, like Nelson does.
Nelson and Family.
As an incurable family man, it comes as no secret for his fans that the 83 year old artist still prefers to go on tours with Family – this is the name of his beloved band, with still accompanies him when he performs his well-known hits. In fact, his childhood was the period in which he grew most as an artist and in which he became a melomaniac. Together with his sister Bobbie, Nelson was raised by his grandparents, both active in the musical field. Both brothers learned to sing the piano, and from 1973 they also started to sing together, an recorded what would later become the Shotgun Willie album. Around this album the band that would go with Willie on tours was formed.

If we were to evaluate an artist by the time he spent on tours, then the only rival for Nelson would be Bon Dylan. He already has 30 representations scheduled for this year and took part in no less than 50 in 2016 – concerts, festivals and charity events. A commonality for all his concerts is that he never performs songs in the same order, but he almost always cheers the crowd up with ”Whiskey River”, and then he goes on – in a pre-established order or not – “Good Hearted Woman”, “Beer for My Horses”, “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, “On the Road Again” and “Always on My Mind”, among others. Apart from his musical career, Nelson also appeared in 30 movies, he wrote many books and was also involved in many actions as a civic activist, with him inclining towards advocacy for biofuels and marijuana legalization. In fact, during his life he was also a fervent consumer of marijuana, a thing he admits with no hold-backs. Moreover, he now sells marijuana himself, using his own name to brand it. “I’ve bought a lot of pot, and now I’m selling some back”, he said for The Guardian. Apart from these subjects, in 2016 he also became a political activist, revealing his anti-Trump stance, and to highlight this he composed a song inspired by the elected president of the USA – “Delete and Fast-Forward”, which will be included in the album “God’s problem child”, due to be released this spring.
Nelson’s childhood was marked by the Great Depression, as he was raised in Texas. He wrote his first song at the age of 7 and by the time he was 10 he also began to sing the guitar in a polka band. He was raised by a conservative grandmother, known as a devoted Christian. In fact, he himself was a faithful Christian for a time, but became skeptic as the years passed as he started to view the restrictions imposed by the Church as absurd. His first “jobs” implied selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias by going door to door, then he was a plumber assistant and then he worked as a DJ having his own radio show. In 1960 he sold his first song for $100, and a year later he became known as a composer. A lesser known thing about him is that he spent some time in the armed forces, as he was enlisted in Air Force, but then got rejected due to some medical issues. Following this experience he then composed “No place for me”.
Willie and Vegas.
One of the most recent scheduled concerts of Nelson was due to take place in the famous Venetian Casino in Vegas. This representation is not a singular one, as the singer became a regular presence in the casinos on the Strip of Vegas. Shirley Collie, the second big love of the artist, became his wife in Las Vegas. His hoarse voice, rebel style, straightforward attitude – all these became key ingredients that made Nelson a likeable figure among gambling players. This is one of the reasons why he became a regular presence on the casino stages, where he regularly performed his most famous hits and where he gave his audience the chance to resonate to his ideas and to his style of addressing any issues – bluntly, with no hesitation. Nelson is not a product of Vegas, but his talent and the messages he chose to convey have always been openly welcomed in the world of casinos, one known for its lack of inhibitions!

Ei bine, un exemplu care le încorporează pe toate acestea este Willie Nelson, un nume mai puțin cunoscut în lumea mainstream a muzicii, însă un icon pentru fanii genului country, în special în SUA, dar și pentru cei care cunosc istoria recentă a Vegasului. Cine este Nelson, cum a ajuns să fie cunoscut pentru muzica pe care o cântă, ce îl leagă de Vegas și ce rol a avut marijuana în viața sa? Dacă ar fi să evaluăm activitatea unui artist după timpul petrecut în turnee, atunci singurul rival al lui Nelson ar fi Bob Dylan. Are deja programate 30 de reprezentații pentru acest an și a participat la nu mai puțin de 50 în 2016 – concerte, festivaluri, acțiuni caritabile. Un lucru comun tuturor concertelor susținute de Nelson este acela că nu respectă niciodată aceeași ordine a pieselor, însă mai mereu încinge atmosfera cu versurile ”Whiskey River”, după care urmează – aleatoriu sau nu – “Good Hearted Woman”, “Beer for My Horses”, “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, “On the Road Again” și “Always on My Mind”, printre altele. În afară de cariera muzicală, Nelson a jucat în peste 30 de flme, a scris mai multe cărți și a fost implicat în multe acțiuni de activism civic, temele predilecte fiind folosirea combustibililor fosili și legalizarea marijuanei. De altfel, el însuși a fost de-a lungul vremii un consumator împătimit de marijuana, recunoscând asta cu cea mai mare lejeritate. Mai mult, acum vinde chiar el marijuana, sub brandul propriului nume. ”Am cumpărat destulă marijuana, iar acum vând pentru a mă revanșa”, a declarat pentru publicația The Guardian. În afară de aceste subiecte, în 2016 a devenit și activit politic, prin atitudinea anti-Trump, în numele căreia a compus mai apoi melodia inspirată de actualul președinte al SUA – ”Delete and Fast-Forward”, care va fi inclusă în albumul ”God’s problem child”, ce va apărea în primăvară.
Copilăria lui Nelson a fost marcată de Marea Depresiune, fiind crescut în Texas. A scris prima piesă la vârsta de 7 ani, iar la 10 ani a început să cânte la chitară într-o formație de polka. A fost crescut de o bunică destul de conservatoare, fiind creștină practicantă. De altfel, chiar el a fost o vreme credincios, însă a devenit sceptic de-a lungul anilor și consideră prohibițiile susținute de biserică absurde. Primele lui ”locuri de muncă” au implicat vânzarea de aspiratoare și enciclopedii în regim door-to-door, asistent de instalator, apoi a lucrat ca DJ, având propria emisiune de radio. În 1960 și-a vândut prima melodie pentru 100 de dolari, iar un an mai târziu a devenit cunoscut ca și compozitor. Un lucru mai puțin știut despre el este acela că a cochetat cu viața militară, fiind cooptat în Air Force, însă mai apoi respins din cauza unor probleme medicale. În urma acestei experiențe a compus apoi ”No place for me”.
Willie și Vegasul.
Pe data de 29 ianuarie a fost programat un concert cu Nelson în celebrul Venetian Casino din Vegas. Această reprezentație nu este una singulară, cântărețul fiind o prezență obișnuită a cazinourilor de pe faimoasa The Strip of Vegas. Shirley Collie, cea de-a doua mare iubire a artistului, avea să îi devină soție chiar în Las Vegas. Vocea răgușită, stilul rebel, atitudinea directă – toate acestea au fost ingrediente care l-au făcut pe Nelson plăcut în fața jucătorilor de gambling. Din acest motiv el a revenit des pe scenele din cazinouri, unde a cântat cele mai cunoscute hituri ale sale și unde le-a dat șansa oamenilor de a rezona cu ideile și stilul lui de a aborda orice problemă – tranșant, fără ocolișuri. Nelson nu este un produs al Vegasului, însă prin talentul său și prin mesajele transmise a fost mereu bine venit în lumea lipsită de inhibiții a cazinourilor!
