When our magazine thought it would be interesting to present in this edition of Casino Inside the portrait of feminine poker player, the first name that came to mind was Vanessa Selbst. This happens before Vanessa becoming the feminine poker player with the highest earnings in the history of the game, after her victory in the High Roller $25,000 within the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure 2013, and before she had claimed the prize of $1,424,420.

Selbst has won this event after defeating the Russian Vladimir Troyanovskiy in heads-up. Later, she said that this was the toughest final table she has ever played.

Already considered one of the best players of the world in live tournaments, Selbst betters now her American compatriot, Kathy Liebert, placing herself in the top of the female players with the greatest gains in the history of the game. Also, Selbst climbed 22 places in the rankings, now occupying the 40th position of in the mix top of the players with the largest income in the history of the game. Liebert, a true legend of the poker world, has accumulated a total of 5.8 million dollars in live tournaments, over more than two decades, while Selbst, 28 years old, needed only seven years to accumulate the amazing amount of 7 million dollars.

„It’s extraordinary to win a High Roller! It was the most difficult final I have ever played, so the victory was all the more special. In addition, it demonstrates that women succeed just as well as men. There’s enough space for those women who want to get involved in this game, to improve their game and to better all the men,” said Selbst after the win.

Vanessa K. Selbst was born on July 9, 1984 in Brooklyn, New York and is an American professional poker player who has made six final tables, plus two heads-up semi-finals, at the World Series of Poker. Selbst also won the main event of the 2010 and 2011 PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour at Mohegan Sun. In 2010, Selbst became a member of Team PokerStars where she is known on the site as „V. Selbst”.

She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology her freshman year of college but transferred to and graduated from Yale University and is currently a student at Yale Law School, with the intention of pursuing a career in the field of civil rights law. At MIT, she participated in intercollegiate tennis and rugby. During her time at Yale, she was head of the Yale Queer-Straight Alliance. Always a gaming fan, Vanessa began playing poker seriously while she was studying political science at Yale University.

She got her first cash win at the World Series of Poker in 2006, when she finished in the seventh position to a No Limit Hold’em Event for $ 2,000.

Selbst has made five final tables at the World Series of Poker, and has one WSOP bracelet in 2008 in a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event. Selbst had the best year of her career in 2010, when she won the North American Poker Tour stop at Mohegan Sun for $750,000, finished 4th at the EPT London High Roller Event for over $200,000, and won the Partouche Poker Tour main event in Cannes for over $1.8M. She earned almost $3M in 2010, earning her 6th place on the 2010 money list, several high rankings in player of the year races, and the honor of being named the Wicked Chops player of the year. She once again made waves in 2011, finishing in the quarterfinals of the NBC Heads Up Championship for $75,000, third at the WPT Five Diamond for $338k, and pulling off an incredible back-to-back victory at the NAPT Mohegan Sun. Her earnings in 2011 totaled just over $1M, meaning she finished two consecutive years with 7 figures in earnings. Thus far in 2012, Selbst has already captured one title: a victory in a $5K buy-in event at the Los Angeles Poker Classic, good for just over $140k. In June last year, she obtained her second WSOP bracelet in the 10-Game $ 2,500 Range Event. Besides the 27 final tables she had participated at, in various live events, she finished in sixth place in the PokerStars Sunday Million, January 2011.

In addition to being a successful poker player, Vanessa is also an executive producer and private poker coach at DeucesCracked. She had made dozens of instructional videos in various disciplines of poker. She has also coached over 70 students, and currently focuses on live tournament coaching.

When she isn’t playing poker, Vanessa concentrates on her studies and also gets involved with political issues such as the fight for social justice. She also likes playing basketball and tennis, and games like pool and darts.

This year, on the day before the beginning of the Bahamas Poker Festival, Vanessa got engaged in Atlantis with her long time partner, Miranda Forster.
