Sports betting: The difference between a hobby and a career

by Valentin Macovei

Maybe I would become a professional punter tomorrow if value betting was as fun as live betting while watching the match with your friends!

Players are actually looking for fun, for an adrenaline rush, a retreat, or an unforgettable experience when betting and are not necessarily after making profits. If we eliminate that stimulus from the sports betting equation, we instantly interrupt the punter’s interest in this phenomenon, and the activity becomes monotonous and boring. It is for this reason that it is difficult for many to become skilled: after getting the proper knowledge, gaining experience and starting to take the right path, they lose contact with that stimulus, and are tempted to make mistakes. Consequently, I have come to the conclusion that punters are nothing more than people who are addicted to adrenaline, to entertainment or simply to a way out of the everyday routine.

What does value betting mean?

It is well-known that betting agencies retain that winning margin on every betting option, so the punter has a disadvantage from the start when it comes to earning a profit. The only way the punter can counteract this advantage of the house is to find valuable bets.

You have certainly come across the term “Value Betting” if you watch betting forums. Many connoisseurs state that a player who does not bet on value can not achieve long-term profit. Simply put, value betting means betting on a quota that is better than it should be, that is, the chances that the result will actually be higher than the odds indicate.

Due to the fact that, in general, most punters bet on the favorites, betting houses tend to provide somewhat worse odds for the most likely outcome. That’s why professionals mostly bet on outsiders and, implicitly, on odds higher than those who bet on the favorites.

Now, in order to maintain a balance between profitability and safety, professionals only place individual bets, on which they have a fixed stake of the initial bankroll (between 0.5% and 5%) and aim to reach average odds of about 2.00. The logic behind this approach is simple: if you place bets with average odds of 2.00 and you win 51% of the times, you make a profit; and vice versa: you aim for average odds of 2.05 and you need to win 50% of the bets to make some profit.

How can the value be detected? This depends entirely on how the punter analyzes the bets and their experience. Usually, it is a combination of the results of software algorithms and what can be collected and processed by the punter manually.

Being a professional punter: a blessing or a curse?

The way you have to bet in order to be able to earn long-term profit is no longer as fun as betting while watching a good match with your friends in a pub, but it becomes like a job, which in some cases is also inevitably stressful.

When you bet on value, you never depend on the outcome of a single match. You do not even bet on the most likely outcome, but on the most profitable odds. There’s a problem here, especially when friends ask you what you bet on. It is possible that they try to do what you do, especially if I know you are seriously committed to betting.

Inevitably, they will often lose, and because they do not place single bets and do not apply a money management strategy like yours, they will not make any profits at the end of the month. But if they don’t blame you for their losses, more or less discreetly and even if they don’t copy your tips, they will certainly take advantage of every opportunity to remind you of how bad your odds of 2 or 3 are, compared to the odds they picked – which almost never exceed 1.40.

In addition, how can you make them understand the actual mechanism and prove that this is probably the only way to make long-term sports betting profitable? Frankly, most of the time there is no point in trying. As long as you don’t show up in a Ferrari, or show them pictures of you on a yacht and as long as you don’t use a helicopter as a cab, they still won’t believe that what you say is true…

How do professional punters live their everyday lives?

In addition to discussions with connoisseurs or gambling enthusiasts, a professional punter will often interact with other people as well. These people may be family, neighbors, friends and other acquaintances. The problem arises when the punter is asked what he or she does for a living or when various discussions and gossip about him or her arise.

Unfortunately, many people have preconceived notions formed before 1989 and treat punters with some contempt. They associate any form of gambling with the mafia and the illegalities shown in the 1950s Las Vegas movies.

There is, however, another type of preconceived notion, generally embraced by captive or ultra-conservative people who cannot accept the lack of safety or in other words the risk: “How do you live without knowing that your salary is coming at the end of the month? That’s not possible! What do you do if you have a bad month? How do you pay with the bills, what do you eat?” – this is the kind of things people talk about.

Therefore, professional punters have to tell people that they are programmers, or that they “work on the internet” or other things like that; otherwise, they would be very often rejected by society, in an absolutely unjustified manner. The reality is that most professional punters have to live a double life. Their daily routine involves a lot of work, maybe too little fun, and in no way a cool life like in the James Bond movies. So if you are a betting enthusiast, it does not mean that professional betting would be your ideal job!

ESSA reports 72 suspicious betting alerts during Q3 2017

International sports betting integrity body ESSA reported 72 cases of suspicious betting to the relevant authorities during the third quarter (Q3) of 2017. This was made up of 46 cases in tennis, followed by football and table tennis with 8 cases each, basketball with four and two cases each for badminton, snooker and volleyball. A total of 152 cases of suspicious betting have been identified and reported by ESSA and its members during the first three quarters of 2017.

ESSA Secretary General Khalid Ali said: “The figures for this quarter again demonstrate the ongoing threat that faces the regulated betting sector and our sports and regulatory authority partners. ESSA has redoubled its efforts to meet that challenge and invested in a number of key initiatives and activities. Partnership working remains at the heart of that approach, with our recent betting integrity event and general stakeholder engagement programme a testament to that.”

The Q3 integrity report includes articles by international law enforcement body INTERPOL on the organisation’s actions to tackle organised criminal activity related to betting and match-fixing, and also by Matt Fowler, ESSA’s Betting Integrity Officer, who outlines his role and the positive impact of having a dedicated resource in this area for ESSA members and our partners alike.

ESSA holds positions on match-fixing and betting policy forums at the European Commission, Council of Europe and the IOC. It is driving a number of important initiatives aimed at addressing match-fixing and is currently involved in four anti-match-fixing projects, having recently hosted an international betting integrity conference at Lords Cricket Ground in London attended by over 150 senior officials from sports bodies, regulatory authorities, policymakers and other key stakeholders.

ESSA represents many of the world’s biggest regulated sports betting operators, serving over 40 million consumers in the EU alone. Concerned regulated bookmakers created ESSA in 2005 to monitor betting markets and alert sporting bodies and national regulators to suspicious betting patterns. The goal was, and is, to protect consumers from potential fraud caused by manipulating sporting events. ESSA helps to combat this with evidence-based intelligence it provides to sporting bodies and regulators.

To Cash Out or not?

cash out

By Valentin Macovei

We try to make clear for the bettors once and for all the subject of closing bets before time!

Perhaps you have ever wondered why betting houses offer the Cash Out feature. Of course, there are several reasons why most operators who respect themselves have already included this feature on online betting platform. One of them might be that they wanted to align to the competition in order not to lose their existing users. The argument is as relevant as it can be, because the function is already very fashionable and it was clear that most top online betting houses had to align, but certainly it is not the only reason for which a betting house would make such a move.

Another reason is that players are more likely to use the feature to their own detriment on a long term, especially if they do not follow a clear strategy for using it. In other words, through the Cash Out feature, the betting house gives you one more opportunity to make a wrong decision and to question your decisions.

And the list does not end here: operators increase their winning margin whenever a player closes the bet. Basically, if the operator has a 95% payout, and you place a bet and then you close it – by basically playing a counter-selection – it’s like giving him twice that 5%; in the long run, it really matters, it feels. If bettors closed all winning bets placed, the winning margin of operators would simply double.

However, let’s not go to extremes because this feature also gives users a few benefits. Players can cover without having to invest any more money. It often happens that bettors do not have the necessary funds to counter – a situation it is never ideal to reach, but, unfortunately, it happens quite often.

The Cash Out function can be extremely useful for bettors when they place a wrong bet. Unlike offline betting houses accepting the cancellation of tickets placed up to 5 minutes ago, online played tickets cannot be canceled and, in these situations, betting closure allows the recovery of the investment almost entirely.

At the same time, this option facilitates the implementation of some online betting strategies. One of the most popular game methods, based on the Cash Out function, is that based on betting the Over 1.5 goals. The whole idea behind this strategy is for the bettor to identify ongoing matches that had high initial chances of ending with at least two or three scored goals, in which the score has not yet been opened in the first half-hour.

Once the stake for the bet has increased, between minutes 30 and 40, the player is to bet the Over 1.5 goals and then close the bet as soon as the score on the table changes. As long as the matches are carefully selected, as a result of an analysis and not by chance, this strategy promises small and quick winnings. This is just one of the many sports betting strategies that are based on betting, but there are many other interesting methods.

Although the function itself may be useful, we must be aware that its introduction would never have occurred if it did not increase the profits of the agencies. Let’s think: before this option was launched, how many times did the players bet against their betting? The vast majority of the passionate, very few times! Today, things have changed and the function is used very often.

The problem is that, now, it seems that this feature is made too available to us, and, for this reason, many gamblers are basically guided to use it more often than necessary. Think about the hundreds of thousands or even millions of pounds that have been lost by those who made Cash Out on Leicester two seasons ago! There are even testimonials of some bettors who say that they cannot actually wait for a bet to settle in a positive way because they call Cash Out every time.

In addition, some operators also introduced a partial Cash Out feature, which allows a part of the initial played bet stake to be closed. This variant seems to push the undefined bettors from behind to act: even if they do not close the bet, they retain for themselves a part of the stake and leave a sum to be played for the sake of suspense. As much as it is true that betting agencies do not want any of their clients to lose their home and remain homeless because of gambling, it is also true that operators shall never launch and promote facilities that shall decrease their profits.

The most disadvantageous thing for a player is not to have a fixed closure betting strategy and to make Cash Out completely chaotic. In the long run, such an approach changes even more sports betting into gambling or better say in gambling where the house has an insurmountable advantage. For players looking to achieve a long-term profit, it is best not to ever turn to this feature.

Betting guide: FC Barcelona

by Mircea Panait

In our regular column, we propose to analyze different European football teams to find the best bets on their matches. Whether it’s the domestic championship, Champions League or UEFA League, it’s good to keep always up-to-date on the latest news on the team we bet on and to analyze the previous results and bets, if any.

It was set up in 1899, and fans and supporters still use the name “blaugrana” when referring to the Catalan team. It is one of the teams that any bettor has met and whom any better has played, FC Barcelona holding numerous European and national trophies.

This being the short history, we shall pass to the part that interests us the most, namely team statistics in the season of 2017 – 2018, which is still in progress. Barca is engaged in the Champions League and La Liga, the most important competitions for a top team. With an average of 1.5 goals / game, Catalan players held an average possession of the ball of 62.9% of the time allocated to the game. The accuracy of the passes is high, 89.5%, averaging 19 goals towards the opponent and 16 dribbles / match. They are very good at discipline, only 5 yellow cards in La Liga until the 9-th of September 2017. We have here, also, 14 tackling / match and 4.5 air duels won in each game.

At a critical glance, FC Barcelona suffers in the offensive, not being the team that used to mark so easily in the past few years. Neymar’s departure to PSG seems to have left a bigger hole than expected in the blaugrana team’s attack. This adds to various criticisms of some former players, rumors that have a negative effect on the team. The Argentinean Lionel Messi prolonged his contract for another 4 years after circulating different rumors regarding some another destination. At the same time, Iniesta refused to extend the contract. Ernesto Valverde Tejedor, the team’s manager, has not positively impressed so far in this season, being rather a coach suitable for a team that has some chances in the UEFA League, but that is all.

Lionel Messi is, of course, the leading scorer with 2 goals, followed by S. Roberto with 1 goal. As to the goal pass chapter, we find G. Deulofeu, J. Alba and P. Alcácer, each with one assistant. One of the weaknesses of the current team is about air duels. Barca is not good at all at this chapter, Busquets being noted for 2 won air duels and that’s all. On the whole, it seems that the entire defensive compartment is deficient in the reaction speed chapter, with the team having trouble confronting hard and fast technical attackers.

Let’s see which could be Barcelona’s strengths: they are very good at long passes and good in creating chances for scores by individual players technique, creating opportunities to score, attacks on the flanks, performing of free kicks, completing scores occasion, possession of the ball, position on the field. Weaknesses would be air duels and the speed of reaction of defending players in front of technical players. The game style is one based on possession, with short passes and midfield offense. The team plays highly, by pressing opponents and controlling the game.

As FC Barcelona now stands, it has no too big chances in the Champions League, according to the results in the first two games in the groups; it is even recommended betting against it, since it does not win the Champions League. It is in Group D with Juventus, Olympiakos and Sporting. In the games played on New Camp in the Champions League, handicap betting on one or two goals without doubling them with the scores number is recommended. Since Barca is not fit at this start of the season, it is possible to bet “several goals in the second half” both in away and home games. They shall play the first game at home, against Juventus, the odds being balanced: @1.80 for Barcelona’s victory, @2.00 Juventus’ victory or tie.

If Messi was exponential for the team, he now becomes vital on the offensive part, Luiz Suarez being expected to score. So far, the Uruguayan is inconstant and it is known that it is difficult for him to enter the season.

In the domestic championship, La Liga, the team seems to be overtaken by the big rivals of Real Madrid, who have kept their offensive trio intact and are seen as the big favorites for the title. The same number of shots to the gate for both teams, Barca being placed in second position in the ranking, with 6 points in two games and 4 scored goals. The most prolific, after the first stages, seem to be the players of Atletico Madrid, with 7 successes.

I expect Barcelona to have good matches at home, in front of its supporters. Depending on the opponent and its defensive capability, a betting system based on “par” is recommended, a bet with real and good odds of @1.90, but, most importantly, it covers the handicap at one goal, at least, and the equal result in the same time. That is, Barca wins with 2-0, 3-1, 4-2, 5-1, 4-0…or equals, both possibilities being covered.

The following bets, depending on the opposing team and the latest news in team groups bets are recommended for away matches: less than 2.5 scored goals in matches against solid teams in defense and fighting for places in European competitions; over 2.5 or even over 3 goals whenever you anticipate an open match or when it comes to Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla or Espanyol Barcelona as opponents.

Both at home and on the road, one can play “Messi scores anytime” when the Argentine is in the field from the very beginning.

I wish you a lot of inspiration!

Daniel Necula, Vector Logic Soft powered by Syncro: “We offer not only a betting software but also a complete and highly flexible platform”

Daniel Necula represents the new wave of entrepreneurs  in the Romanian betting industry, and the vision he brings  to the market is a new, dynamic, and looks to the future.  The team he gathered around his business idea  successfully meets current demands. Software creation does not just mean digits and computer code writing,  but also involves a whole emulation towards a unitary  concept that takes into account the needs of both operators and players.

We invite you to learn more about their products from Daniel Necula, one of the shareholders of Vector Logic Soft.

How did your business start?

The sports betting market in Romania is expanding fast. Players are experienced and organizers have to offer them more and more. Given that we have been in the sports betting market for more than 8 years, we have been able to analyze very well the direction in which it is heading.

Our team has emerged out of the desire to create a competitive market, aligned with international requirements, a market where players have access to a multitude of events and organizers can focus on the overall picture of their business. Together with Sincron Software, we have developed this product, which blends with the requirements of both sides of the counters of betting houses.

What is your concept and vision?

We started from the essence of betting as an understanding between the betting house and the player. The betting house proposes an event, the player places a bet, and the house must agree with them to complete the bet. This process must flow fluently in both directions.

When several small and large organizers appeared on the market, it became a segmented market. This segmentation confuses players. We have created a team of experienced bookmakers both on the landbase market and online, with which we have managed to create a competing product in accordance with international standards.

What advantages does Vector Logic Soft have on this gaming industry software market, considered to be highly competitive?

We offer not only a betting software but also a complete and highly flexible platform. The services we offer range from:

• hosting on the gaming platform

• international lotteries results

• ongoing bets results

to:

• Fixtures

• Odds trading

• Risk management

We can provide each service separately as well as the entire White Label bookmaking solution.

What do you think is the trend in the software segment dedicated to the sports betting industry, lotto, live games, etc. and how does Vector Logic Soft relate to this trend?

Currently, most bookmakers process data manually, which results in a high risk factor. The trend leads to the introduction of mathematical models in data processing, and the role of bookmakers tends towards an advisory one in exceptional circumstances. The player does not like to feel supervised, so authorization and risk management procedures must be well-defined and consistent.

Why do you think your Sportbook product is superior to other competing products?

Our competition is external, which is not an advantage in a single market like the one in Romania. By providing a complete product that includes a competitive sports offer and a well-structured software platform, we avoid situations in which the player is dissatisfied with offer errors and the organizer is wary of possible speculation and disputes.

Why is Syncro 6 one of the most played random number games in Europe? What does it provide in addition to other similar products on the market?

Number games, whether it’s the classic lottery, or games like keno and bingo, have always been an attraction for players. In addition to the probability of winning, one of the key features is the social feature and the entertainment. The game is dynamic, excitement is present up until the last extracted number, and the most important thing is that everything gets bigger if you are with a group of friends.

Compared to other competing products, Syncro 6 is the only game that can work in a setting of both 48 balls and 49 balls. It can be set up under various themes, customized according to customer requirements. The game provides a multitude of special rounds, bonuses, all player-oriented.

What can you tell us about the „Live” product offer from Vector Logic?

The new Live product offer is underway, with important resources being allocated to this project over the past few months. In addition to the agency product, integration will also be performed with regard to products intended for terminals, but also with regard to the new online platform.

Paid bets, paid picks, paid tips – Should we buy or not? (2)

by Mircea Panait

In the previous edition of the magazine, we have made an analysis of paid bets. We are trying to elaborate this topic, which is very special and for which, however, little pertinent data and information ca be found. The question “Does it worth paying for bets/tips” is problematic for most of us.

If you have already decided, consider the following pieces of advice: a) do you have accounts in betting houses where the tips are provided?; b) does your bank agree with the required or recommended amount bets?; c) how long do you receive your tips before the event starts, is the method of communication advantageous for you?; d) what are your expectations from this service?; e) what guarantees do you have on continuance, consistence, reliability, and physical support offered?; f) are those who offer paid tips certifies, licensed, controlled by a third party?

a) do you have accounts at the betting houses where tips are offered? On the Romanian market, there are licensed betting agencies that have quite diversified offers. You would better be informed on the Terms and Conditions of each agency, on the betting method, average betting rates and limits. Some betting houses have small limits, others have no Asian handicap, and other offer no favourable rates. If you lose on rate @1.70, which is actually @1.84, you do not do anything but accumulate a small row of loses due to margins. Another matter to be considered is the possible limitation of the betting account. Betting agencies do not like winners. It is determined that only 2% of the betters have constant winnings and obtain a profit.

b) does your bank agree with the required or recommended amount bets? Here the matter is relatively sensitive, because each of us knows their available budget for betting, betting bank. If the service is a monthly one, for which you pay a subscription (i.e. 500 RON) and a number of 20 tips is offered, the conclusion is that the bank used needs to be substantial, several times bigger than the paid subscription. In this case, both monthly profit and the rate need to be carefully monitored.

c) how long do you receive your tips before the event starts, is the method of communication advantageous for you? Bets, tips shall be submitted and taken over within a reasonable time, which allows you to benefit from a certain rate related to the bet. Depending on the market, betting houses amend the rates on-line, and if the received bet has a @2.01 rate at the agency, when you try to bet, the rate became @1.94, even if the bet is a winning bet, the rate shall be affected. Therefore, if you have a performant smartphone and you frequently read your e-mails, it is preferable to receive bets via at least two methods.

d) what are your expectations from this service? Here is a type of subscription, present on the Romanian market: ”VIP Classic – 100 lei per one month,  VIP Gold –150 lei per two month,  VIP Platinum – 200 lei per three months. VIP subscribers will receive 2 live tickets a day; 1 VIP ticket, rate 2-3; 1 VIP ticket, rate 3-7. Our tickets have a success rate of minimum 51%”. Analyse which are your expectations: a 10% monthly profit rate, to double, triple the bank,… and if those are realistic. There is no short way to profit in sport betting.

e) what guarantees do you have on continuance, consistence, reliability, and physical support offered?

f) are those who offer paid tips certifies, licensed, controlled by a third party? The two facts are directly related and they draw attention to this matter of a special importance.

First, there should be a licensed website. If it not licensed, it should be at least verified, audited by a third party (there are several websites specialized in verifying the exactness of tips). Secondly, it is about a certain seniority in the field and of recommendations granted by other betters. Reputation and results of a site or of a tipster can be easily checked and each site specialized in this field submits a list of partners/tipsters, and timely details of their activities.

Paid bets, paid picks, paid tips – Should we buy or not?

by Mircea Panait

The topic of paid bets is one of the most avoided topics in the gambling world. Because most of the betters are men and men are good at politics and football; therefore they are also good at betting. More than that, each better has a preconceived opinion on paying for or buying predictions, prognostics or betting systems. I have tried to analyze this topic beyond prejudices and to find what’s behind paid bets.

First of all, this is a service. This activity may be classified under paid services. Secondly, it may be found and is used in the online environment.

However, what we are buying, what we pay for, what is offered to us:

1. Tips, predictions, prognostics/betting odds without an analysis or justification, counting on obtaining positive financial results.

2. Tips, predictions, prognostics/betting odds accompanied by a more or less comprehensive analysis, which may be pertinent despite some negative results.

3. Betting systems, when both tips and modalities of betting at various agencies with the best odds are offered. In this case, the stake may be fixed (for instance 10 or 100 Lei for each bet) or variable (increasing or reducing the stake depending on the earlier results). The discussion also concerns the level of the odds, because there are specialized websites or tipsters which use odds higher than or equal to odd @2.00, as well as others offering tips starting from a value analysis, and the odds may implicitly be higher or lower.

4. Surebets, referring to multiple bets made at the same time (or gradually within a certain period) at several betting houses and which offer a win margin at each match (usually comprised between 0.5 and 2% depending on the value and liquidity of the odds, but in this case the reaction speed is crucial).

5. “Inside tips” based on a real time analysis of the betting trend at a certain event.

6. Tips on fixed matches or possible fixed matches whose result in known beforehand. These are the most tempting and the most dangerous services of this kind. Both from a legal standpoint, and from an ethical standpoint, as well as in respect of the financial safety of the buyers, they should be avoided because the betting houses may block an event or several events in the case of suspicions, and they may also cancel the bets or refuse to pay the wins even based on risk analyses.

Taking into account the above, we reached the moment when we decided to invest and buy tips, predictions, bets. What should be done further on?

Try to verify the history and references of those from whom you intend to buy tips.

Review the terms and conditions of those offering paid tips. Starting from this, take into account all the aspects related to this service:

-a) do you have accounts at the betting houses where the tips are offered?

-b) does your bank agree to the requested or recommended stakes?

-c) how long before the beginning of the event do you receive the tips, is the communication method advantageous for you?

-d) which are your expectations from this service?

-e) what guarantees do you have in terms of constancy, consistency, reliability and support offered?

-f) are the persons offering you tips certified, licensed, verified by a third party?

In the past years and on the background of the enactment of laws on online betting in our country, a lot of people were of the opinion that the phenomenon of paid bets decreased. I would say the contrary. There are even socialization environments full of betters who promise quick success to all those who choose to subscribe to their tips or to pay for each prediction. In the next issue, I will present mathematic models for the analysis of the results and credibility of a website specialized in paid bets or of a tipster and I shall provide details on the paid bets.

Improve your football match analysis routine following these directions

by Valentin Macovei

Having done your homework, determining money-generating bets will become much easier to achieve

Football is so popular nowadays that we are simply bombarded with information, reactions, opinions, analyses and extraordinary moments. Time is always too short and match analysis does not always turn out the way we want it. We often place our bets being pressed for time or under a certain momentum: we seem to wait for that piece of news to confirm our theory and in no way do we want to be more detached, although this would certainly help us make the best decisions.

Above all, you need to understand that specialization will help you in every way. Choose a few teams or championships – depending on how much time you have – and start creating your own database of dynamic information. If you are very cerebral, you can use your mind, otherwise you will need a notebook (and pen) or a telephone/computer/tablet: you will take notes for each team you are following.

Make fair and objective estimates of the value of the teams you will place your bets on. Your target should be a correct overall assessment, targeting the following 4-5 months (until the next mercato period).

Allocate different fields for each team for: tradition, reputation, sponsors, team homogeneity and its evolution, psychological stability and management involvement, the ability of the coach to motivate the team in key moments, to find the best medium term solutions and to stand his ground in the lockers, the way supporters react in different situations, current/potential pressure and how it affects the players and the coach, but also other things you may find relevant. Update this content only when major changes occur or when events take place that truly change the game.

Do not include the current shape the team is in here: this is what you will deduct from your regular, day-to-day, match-by-match notes.

Familiarize yourself with the style of each team. Knowing the features of both teams, you will find it easy to anticipate certain things that the bookmakers may overlook. Try to stay up to date on certain basic things and don’t get lost in insignificant details. For each team, you should know things such as:

  • Do they usually play better/worse in the first/second half?
  • Are players losing focus at the end of each half/the game?
  • Do they have the power to recover after the first goal?
  • How do they react in difficult times, do they play better, do they become more aggressive, do they rush and play erratically, throwing balls forward and cynically hacking other players, or do they get scared and start committing more errors?
  • Do they try to score more goals or do they become defensive at all costs when they are in the lead?
  • Do they play worse when it rains, do they fail in front of a 5 defenders team or do they have issues when X is not in good shape or not playing?

Split hairs and go in depth. This process is hugely time consuming but, over time, the effort is minimized and thighs start to flow naturally. If you think this is too much, specialize in one league (possibly one with as few teams as possible).

Observe and put down any personal and collective defects of players and teams. For example, there are players that are extremely aggressive, but they only become so under certain circumstances. They tend to generate free kicks or penalty kicks and, if challenged early, risk elimination or cautious play warning – which makes them less efficient. Another example might be goalkeepers that are insecure with crossings, who can easily be tricked if opponents cross well and often. Not lastly, I would also like to emphasize the importance of players who are efficient at simulating or of those who provoke their opponents or simply exasperate them using various tricks.

Having taken these notes, the next step is to compare the two likely starting line-ups for the teams playing against each other. See if anything sticks out, like a slow left defender who will be on the same side with a speedy opponent who crosses well or starts dangerous actions from that position. Piece together the data collected and surely you will discover important aspects of the game’s economy. For an optimum analysis, you should watch the last match of the teams that will face each other in the next match.

If you want to further your analysis, you can use another stage, namely: monitor forums and groups on fan club social networks. You can pick extremely valuable and unique information there, that doesn’t always catch the attention of the media. You can even monitor Facebook/Instagram/Twitter pages of major players in each team. Even if you think this is a huge and often unnecessary amount of work, as you go through this process you will occasionally find key elements to determine the winning bets.

Get used to take things calmly and not take hasty decisions. One of the most common errors committed by gamblers is that they put pressure on themselves. Set your list of tips in advance and sleep at least one night before placing your bet. Ideally, you should have predictions put down for the following 5-6 days which you should only change when something extra comes up. In this way you will often have access to the best odds and you will not have to face the tormented process of analysing matches on adverse days for your bank.

The stress and emotions of the moment affect the way we think and most of the times lure us into making bad decisions. If we have our predictions set and possibly our bets placed when we have a negative series, we will find it easier to eliminate impulse betting and dissipate frustration and tormenting thoughts.

Another trap players often fall into is one based on their very competitive nature. Learn to quickly pass over matches where you don’t know what to bet, stop hesitating and stop looking for the perfect prediction if you don’t see it come naturally. Learn to pass on matches and days when nothing comes together. To keep your mind occupied you can analyse matches in the following days or weeks, you can update your notes or take a well-deserved break.

I will conclude with a piece of advice for those who tend to set a prediction in their mind and then, for one reason or the other, at the end of the analysis bet the exact opposite, only to be disappointed by the final result.

If you find yourself in this category, it only means you have failed to collect sufficient data to make a proper analysis or you have failed to properly weigh in the information at hand. Perhaps you are too easily influenced by certain pieces of news, such as an injury – which may not weigh as much as you used to think.

In any case, you should try your best to identify that one variable that leads you into the wrong decisions because, after all, it costs you money! If you can’t figure out what you should do differently, for the moment, you can try to place your next 10-20 bets exactly opposite as you had wanted to, as it might help you look at the data and matches from a different angle, which will reveal what those things are that you should change.
