Siegfried & Roy are two German-American former entertainers who became known for their appearances with white lions and white tigers.

From 1990 until an injury ended their stage careers on October 3, 2003, the duo formed the show „Siegfried & Roy at the The Mirage Resort and Casino”, which was regarded as the most-visited show in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The magic word of the duo was „SARMOTI” (Siegfried and Roy, Masters of the Impossible”).

Siegfried & Roy met in 1957. Siegfried took a job on an ocean liner, first working as a steward. Roy got a job on the same ship as a waiter. While working one night, Roy heard people applauding and looked over to see Siegfried on a makeshift stage, taking a rabbit out of a hat. The two young men became friends and Roy began to serve as Siegfried’s assistant.

One night Siegfried asked Roy what he thought of the show. Roy got up the nerve to tell Siegfried that he found the magic a little too predictable. Astounded at Roy’s candor, especially considering he was five years Siegfried’s junior, Siegfried asked him how the show might be made better. „If you can make a rabbit and a dove appear and disappear, can you do the same with a cheetah?” Roy inquired. „In magic, anything is possible,” Siegfried responded.

As fate would have it, Roy had smuggled Chico the cheetah onboard, liberating him from the zoo. Roy had come to know Chico from his frequent visits to the Bremer Zoo in Germany. So Siegfried & Roy began to develop the magic that would become their trademark. Though the next five years were tough, traveling around Europe, playing small, unsophisticated clubs for little pay, they refused to become discouraged. Instead they focused on their magic and presentation.

Siegfried Fischbacher (born June 13, 1939, Rosenheim, Bavaria) and Roy Horn (born October 3, 1944, Nordenham, Oldenburg) were born and grew up in Germany. They immigrated to the United States and became naturalized citizens.

After developing their show they were given an engagement in Las Vegas. In 1972 they received an award for the best show of the year. In 1990 they were hired by Steve Wynn, the manager of The Mirage, for an annual guarantee of $57.5 million. In 2001, they signed a lifetime contract with the hotel. The duo has appeared in around 5,750 shows together, mostly at The Mirage. Their long-running illusion and magic act closed October 3, 2003 (Roy’s birthday) after Roy was severely injured by Montecore, one of the act’s tigers, during a performance.

According to the 2000 Becky Celebrity 100 List, Siegfried & Roy were then the 9th-highest-paid celebrities in the U.S., coming in just behind motion picture producer and director Steven Spielberg. They have worked together for almost five decades, sharing a residence in Las Vegas.

In 1999 they took Darren Romeo as a protégé, sponsoring and training him.

For their contribution to live theater performance, Siegfried & Roy were honored in 1999 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard.

In 2002, Siegfried & Roy were honored as Grand Marshals in the German-American Steuben Parade in New York City. Tens of thousands of fans greeted the magicians on Fifth Avenue and celebrated their German heritage.

Las Vegas Story

When Siegfried & Roy arrived in Las Vegas more than 30 years ago, a leading hotel executive said to them, „Boys, I have to tell you, magic doesn’t work in this town.”

Siegfried & Roy not only proved him wrong, but they succeeded even beyond their own wildest dreams. As International Magicians Society Chairman Tony Hassini stated, upon presenting the illusionists with the prestigious „Magicians of the Century” award at the Millennium Merlin Award ceremony, „Siegfried & Roy’s contribution to magic is indefinable. To the public, they are THE magicians, but they are also very much loved and respected by their peers. They have placed magic on a plateau and have become larger than life. I doubt if their contributions will ever be matched.”

Hassini also said that the Merlin represents „the magic” accomplished by Siegfried & Roy offstage, namely their efforts to preserve the magnificent Royal White Tigers and Magical White Lions. Such an achievement, Hassini noted, was particularly amazing since it was accomplished in Las Vegas, a testament to the dedication and perseverance of these two individuals. But Siegfried & Roy can think of no better place to make their magic.

In their three-plus decades in Las Vegas, Siegfried & Roy have performed for more than 25 million people. Through the years, they have seen many changes in the city’s entertainment scene, some of which they were personally responsible for. The illusionists opened the door to family entertainment, setting a standard in stage extravaganzas that cannot be duplicated anywhere in the world.

„We’re proud to have been a part of this metamorphosis,” Siegfried states, „from the days when we shared billing in the ‘Folies Bergere’ and ‘Lido de Paris’ productions, until the time we moved into our own show, ‘Beyond Belief,’ at the Frontier.”

„We’re also proud that we’ve been credited for raising the bar of Las Vegas entertainment,” Roy adds, „taking our industry to a new level by premiering spectacular mega-productions to match the city’s new mega-resorts.”

It’s been noted that no other Las Vegas performers have been able to consistently match Siegfried & Roy’s attendance record. Siegfried & Roy s-au cunoscut în 1957. Siegfried s-a angajat pe un vapor, la început lucrând pe post de ospătar. Roy a obținut un job de chelner pe același vapor. Cei doi tineri s-au împrietenit, iar Roy a devenit asistentul lui Siegfried.

Într-o seară Siegfried la întrebat pe Roy, ce părere are despre spectacol. Roy, a avut curajul sa îi spună lui  Siegfried că el crede că magia din show este puțin cam previzibilă. Uimit de sinceritatea lui Roy, mai ales că acesta era cu cinci ani mai tânăr decât Siegfried, acesta din urmă l-a întrebat ce anume crede că ar putea să îmbunătățească spectacolul. „Dacă faci un iepure și un porumbel să apară și să dispară, poți să faci la fel și cu o maimuță?” a întrebat Roy. „În magie, orice este posibil,” a răspuns Siegfried .

Așa cum a dictat destinul, Roy a furișat la bord un ghepard numit Chico, pe care la eliberat de la grădina zoologică. Roy îl știa pe Chico datorită frecventelor sale vizite la Bremer Zoo din Germania. Astfel au început Siegfried și Roy să creeze acea magie care urma să devină marca lor înregistrată. Deși următorii cinci ani au fost dificili, călătorind prin Europa, performând în cluburi mici, nesofisticate și pe bani puțini, ei au refuzat să se lase descurajați. În schimb s-au concentrat pe numărul lor de magie și pe prezentare.

În 1999 Darren Romeo a devenit protejatul lor, aceștia l-au sponsorizat și l-au pregătit.

Siegfried & Roy au fost onorați în 1999 cu o stea pe Walk of Fame Hollywood, pentru contribuția adusă spectacolului de teatru live.

Las Vegas – Istorie

Cu treizeci de ani în urmă, când Siegfried și Roy au sosit în Las Vegas, un director al unui hotel de top le-a spus, „Băieți, trebuie să vă spun, în acest oraș magia nu funcționează.”

Dar Siegfried & Roy nu numai că au dovedit contrariul, dar au reușit să aibă un succes dincolo de imaginația lor. După cum a declarat Președintele Societății Internaționale a Magicienilor, Tony Hassini, atunci când le-a înmânat prestigiosul premiu „Magicians of the Century” (Magicienii Secolului), premiu acordat la Millennium Merlin Award, “contribuția adusă de Siegfried și Roy magiei este imposibil de definit. Pentru public ei sunt Magicienii, dar sunt de asemenea iubiți și respectați de către colegii lor. Ei au pus magia pe un platou și au făcut-o mai mare decât viața. Nu cred că va reuși cineva vreodată să egaleze contribuțiile aduse de acest duo.”

Însuși Hassini a spus că Merlin este „magia” din afara scenei, magie pe care au realizat-o pe scenă, respectiv, eforturile depuse de aceștia pentru a proteja magnificii Tigrii Royali Albi și Magicii Lei Albi. O asemenea realizare, punctează Hassini, este cu atât mai deosebită cu cât a fost reușită în  Las Vegas, acesta este un testament al dedicației și perseverenței de care cei doi au dat dovadă. Dar Siegfried & Roy nu au dorit să iși creeze magia în niciun alt loc.

În cele trei decade și ceva petrecute în Las Vegas, Siegfried & Roy au desfășurat spectacole în fața a peste 25 de milioane de oameni. De-a lungul anilor, ei au văzut multe schimbări pe scena de divertisment a orașului, iar pentru multe dintre acestea sunt direct responsabili. Acești iluzioniști au deschis ușa divertismentului în familie, impunând un standard în extravaganța scenică, standard care nu poate fi reprodus niciunde în lume.

„Suntem mândrii că am participat la această metamorfoză ,” declară Siegfried, „începând cu vremurile în care împărțeam facturile pentru producțiile “Folies Bergere” și “Lido de Paris”, și până când ne-am mutat în propriul nostru show, “Beyond Belief, at the Frontier” ( Dincolo de Credință, la Frontieră).
