Las Vegas has become a sort of El Dorado for any casino operator, but also for the big construction companies of the world, but the space on The Strip is limited. Precisely for this reason, in order to ensure the availability of space for new constructions, the old ones have to disappear. Well, operators in Vegas found a solution that is both ingenious and interesting, but also hard to execute: controlled demolitions for buildings, by setting up implosions, which have to be executed with the precision of a surgical operation, so as to avoid affecting the surrounding buildings, worth billions of dollars. Stardust – replaced by Echelon Place, Boardwalk – replaced by MGM Mirage City Center, Desert Inn – which was demolished to make room for Wynn Las Vegas, and the list can continue.
The demolition of a casino has become a reason to celebrate: the activity is accompanied by fireworks, lights and rounds of applause, and also extremely publicized. This was the case at least with the event set up for the demolition of Hotel Monaco Tower of the Riviera Casino, which was the first casino of its size to be built in Vegas, opened in 1955 and which hosted stars like Frank Sinatra or Barbara Streisand. It was also the setting scene for filming one of the most well-known movies in Vegas, such as Ocean’s 11, Diamonds are Forever and the classic movie Casino, with Robert De Niro. The demolition of this casino lasted no more than one minute, and in the next minutes the smog also disappeared, raising into the stratosphere, leaving behind a huge empty space in the northern part of The Strip.
The actual work for flattening the building was made by the company W.A. Richardson Builders LLC that won the $42 million contract. In the case of the Monte Carlo tower, for example, the workers “covered” the building in plastic and chisel away the finish that contained asbestos, so the work was a painstaking one. This explains the degree of precision that is put into this kind of work, a really delicate one, as those who arrange these implosions cannot allow any mistake to be made, due to the need to avoid collateral damage on the surrounding buildings. On a regular basis, the adjacent streets are usually closed for a few hours, both before and after the implosion. The Riviera and the land around it were sold to the tourism agency Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, for the amount of $182 million, to which transaction costs of $8 million were added.
Vegasul, a gambling paradise rising again from its ashes
The first controlled implosion of a casino in Vegas was that of the Dunes casino, that took place in 1993 and since then these events have repeated with increased frequency, with the often associated motto ”Out with the old, in with the new”. This is not surprising at all given that Vegas is one of the most “hunted” destinations among casino operators, due mostly to the huge number of tourists lured into it. Due to these controlled implosions, Vegas now has a unitary architectural aspect, and the incoherencies are more than often attributed to design preferences than to style fractures and difference of building materials.
Most of the times there is a practical reasoning behind them, but demolitions have also been conducted due to symbolic reasons. The demolition of The Dunes, for example, a casino that was built in 1955 and the 10th resort of its type to be constructed in Vegas, was a symbol of the dawn of an era in which the Vegas was controlled by the Mafia, and the fact that Dunes was indeed controlled by such group was no secret. The 23 story building was demolished in front of a crowd of 25.000 people, during a grand pyrotechnic show, with costs rising up to $1 million. The Dunes was replaced by the famous Bellagio, a common destination for Hollywood stars and not only.
The controlled implosion of some giant contractions, like casinos regularly are, cannot be made surreptitiously. A controlled implosion is usually planned with months ahead, and in the case of the casino Clarion, owned at some point by Debbie Reynolds, around 2.000 kg of explosives were needed to flatten it. It was the 13th hotel which was brought down in this manner, in 2015. The most used type of explosive is the dynamite, and the quantities required usually differ from building to building: in the case of Hacienta Hotel 2500 dynamite sticks were used, while for Landmark 50 kg of dynamite were required, only a fraction of what took to bring down The Dunes, for example.
The reasons why demolitions were undertaken differ greatly. In 1998, Aladdin Hotel and Casino was demolished because it was considered too small to fit in the new look of Vegas, with only 1100 rooms. In this case, a simple big bang solved the problem of inadequacy and in less than two years a new Aladdin resort was built in its place. Even if some buildings are flattened, in a controlled manner, the big legend and the small legends of Vegas will never fade, and these carefully organized events to mark the demolition of old buildings only mark the reborn of Vegas, its adaptation to new times and aim to break the ties with a past that was mostly infamous and sold to Mafia connections.-Oana Mihalache

Datorită acestor implozii controlate, aspectul Vegasului este acum unul unitar, iar incoerențele arhitecturale sunt cel mult datorate unor preferințe tematice decât unor discrepanțe majore de stil și materiale folosite.
Chiar dacă de cele mai multe ori au scopuri practice, aceste demolări sunt uneori făcute și în scopuri simbolice. Demolarea The Dunes, de exemplu, cazino construit în 1955 și al zecelea resort-casino de acest fel ridicat în Vegas, a simbolizat finalul epocii în care Mafia controla Las Vegasul, nefiind un secret pentru nimeni că The Dunes era controlat de aceștia. Clădirea cu 23 de etaje a fost dărâmată în fața a 25.000 de oameni, în cadrul unui adevărat show pirotehnic, care a costat nu mai puțin de un milion de dolari. Dărâmarea controlată a unei construcții mamut, cum sunt de regulă cazinourile, nu se face clandestin. O implozie controlată este plănuită de regulă cu câteva luni înainte, iar în cazul cazinoului Clarion, care a fost deținut la un moment dat de Debbie Reynolds, pentru dărâmarea lui au fost folosite în jur de 2.000 kg de explozibil. A fost cel de-al 13-lea hotel care a fost dărâmat astfel, în 2015.
