We have a situation which persists for 24 years: Indifference. This state of mind has comprised the entire Romanian society after 1990. Each man for himself and the devil take the hindmost. We live in a materialistic, consuming society. Our selfishness is completed also by the lack of a common vision in regard to the point, the place we want to reach. Therefore, we have neither solidarity nor vision.

I come to you with a situation. This year, on January 25th, after a powerful blizzard, a significant portion of approximately 80 meters from the roof of the State Jewish Theater (TES) was spun off, and until today, this institution of culture has no roof. According to the Office of Historical Monuments, the building in which resides the State Jewish Theatre is a historical monument.

The State Jewish Theater in Bucharest, dates back to the last decade of the nineteenth century. Dr. Iuliu Barasch, who had purchased the land, originally intended to build a clinic here. The land was located in the heart of the Jewish quarter, where towards the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, lived about 300,000 Jews. After a few years here was built not a clinic, but a House of Culture. In 1948 was established the State Jewish Theatre, and in 1954-1955 the building was renovated in the shape which has been preserved until today. The auditorium has nearly 300 seats, air conditioning and sound, simultaneous translation facility with helmet, being used as a conference room and symposia. Before that misfortune, in the foyer of the theater were frequently held various art exhibits, book launches, etc.

I recently discussed with the Director of TES, the great actress Maia Morgenstern, about the present situation of the real estate and perhaps you will not be surprised to find out that so far the only ones that have been helping are not the ones who were supposed to do so – the Town Hall of the Capital, but men who are emotionally bound of this monument of culture – actors, headed by Mrs. Morgenstern and simple people, theatre lovers.

In accordance with the Rules of Organization and Functioning of the institution, „The Jewish State Theatre is a public institution of culture of local interest of Bucharest, financed from subsidies from local budgets of Bucharest, and from their own income.” „The Activity of the State Jewish Theater is coordinated by the General Directorate for Development and Investment – The Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism within the City Hall of Bucharest.”

Therefore, the General City Hall of the capital is that which should have been taking action in the fastest possible way to curb the degradation of this national-historical edifice of culture. It did not!

Maia Morgenstern is struggling for a long time for this issue to come to the attention of the authorities, so that the building will be repaired and renovated. According to the actress, no late than last year, the Mayor Sorin Oprescu himself, came and took note of the difficulties faced by the institution in terms of its housing.

After several months in which the roof of the theatre was patched up repetedly, and the authorities have made committees and commissions, here’s that at this point TES still has no roof. Moreover, the only person who was able to do something about it, is a respectable gentleman of 90 years old who has financed from its own resources for a provisional roof so that the water resulting from the heavy rains experienced in recent months would not  make even more damage to the inside of the building.

This state of affairs, where a historic building of inestimable beauty and incredible architectural and cultural importance reached desolation, is not a singular example. Everywhere in Bucharest, I see true jewels, true architectural monuments of different styles -Art Nouveau, Eclectic or Brâncoveanu, of incredible value, which lie in abandonment and stand to collapse. These buildings are true treasures, a legacy left to us by those before, and we through our neglect, we deride them.

The State Jewish Theater is now functioning through various halls of other theaters. I have been to a few shows at the New Hall of the Comedy Theatre, on the Holy Friday Street. It’s not normal that an assortment of artists and people who are part of the production team to walk from one place to another to provide us with art, feelings and emotions. We should help them, we should do something so that this building of the Jewish Theater to be repaired and reinforced as soon as possible.

Specifically, what should we do? To hammer at the authorities to take emergency measures in case of TES – our immediate goal, on the one hand; and on the other hand to raise the problem of the general situation of the historic buildings of the capital, so they can benefit from special attention of the city fathers that should protect them, so that the future generations to enjoy the beauty of their history. I know, you will say that there is no money for this and we do not have a good legislation in this field. But those are details. The goal is important. If you really want to solve the problem …

Avem o situație care persistă de 24 de ani: Nepăsarea. Această stare a cuprins întreaga societate românească de după 1990. Fiecare e pentru el. Trăim într-o societate materialistă, de consum. Egoismul nostru este completat și de lipsa unei viziuni comune asupra punctului, a locului unde am dori să ajungem. Așadar, nu avem nici solidaritate și nici viziune.

Vă supun atenției o situație. În acest an, pe 25 ianuarie, după un viscol puternic, o parte semnificativă, de circa 80 de metri pătrați din acoperișul Teatrului Evreiesc de Stat (TES) s-a desprins, iar instituția de cultură nu are nici până în acest moment acoperiș. Conform Oficiului Monumentelor Istorice, imobilul în care există Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat este un monument istoric.

Clădirea Teatrului Evreiesc de Stat din Bucureşti datează din ultima decadă a secolului al XIX-lea. Doctorul Iuliu Barasch, care cumpărase terenul, intenţiona iniţial să construiască aici o clinică. Terenul era situat în inima unui cartier evreiesc bucureştean, unde spre sfârşitul secolului XIX şi începutul secolului XX trăiau în jur de 300.000 de evrei. După câţiva ani aici s-a construit totuşi nu o clinică, ci o casă de cultură. În 1948 a fost înfiinţat Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat, iar în 1954-1955 clădirea a fost renovată în forma care s-a păstrat până astăzi. Sala de spectacole are aproape 300 de locuri, instalaţie de sunet şi de climatizare, instalaţie de traducere simultană la cască, fiind folosită şi ca sală de conferinţe şi simpozioane. Înainte de această nenorocire, în foaierul teatrului aveau loc dese vernisaje de expoziţii de artă, lansări de carte, etc.

Am discutat de curând cu directorul TES, marea actriță Maia Morgenstern, despre situația actuală a imobilului și, probabil n-o să vă mire, dar până în acest moment singurii care au luat măsuri nu sunt cei care ar fi trebuit să le ia – Primăria Generală a Capitalei, ci oamenii legați sufletește de acest monument de cultură – actorii, în frunte cu doamna Morgenstern și oamenii simpli, iubitori de teatru.

Conform Regulamentului de Organizare și Funcționare al instituției, “Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat este o instituție publică de cultură de interes local al Municipiului București, finanțată din subvenții de la bugetul local al Municipiului București și din venituri proprii.” “Activitatea Teatrului Evreiesc de Stat este coordonată de Direcția Generală Dezvoltare și Investiții – Direcția Cultură, Sport, Turism din cadrul Primăriei Municipiului București.”

Așadar, Primăria Generală a Capitalei este cea care ar fi trebuit să intervină în cel mai rapid mod cu putință pentru a stopa degradarea acestui edificiu național-istoric de cultură. Nu a făcut-o!

Maia Morgenstern se zbate de mai mult timp pentru ca această clădire să intre în atenția autorităților pentru a fi reparată și renovată. Conform spuselor actriței, chiar anul trecut, domnul primar general Sorin Oprescu, a venit și a luat notă de dificultățile prin care trece instituția în ceea ce privește starea sa locativă.

După mai multe luni în care acoperișul teatrului a fost cârpit în fel și chip, iar autoritățile au făcut comitete și comiții, iată că TES tot nu are în acest moment acoperiș. Mai mult decât atât, singura persoană care a reușit să întreprindă ceva este un domn respectabil de 90 de ani care a finanțat din propriile resurse realizarea unui acoperiș provizoriu pentru ca apa ce a rezultat de la nenumăratele ploi din ultimele luni să nu afecteze și mai rău interiorul clădirii.

Această stare de fapt, prin care o clădire istorică de o frumusețe inestimabilă și de o importanță arhitecturală și culturală incredibilă a ajuns în paragină, nu reprezintă un exemplu singular. Peste tot în București, văd adevărate bijuterii, practic monumente arhitectonice de diferite stiluri – Art Nouveau, Eclectic sau Brâncovenesc – de o valoare  incredibilă, care zac în paragină și stau să se prăbușească. Aceste clădiri sunt adevărate comori, o moștenire lăsată nouă de cei de dinaintea noastră de care noi, prin nepăsarea noastră, ne batem joc.

Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat își desfășoară activitatea în acest moment prin diverse săli ale altor teatre. Însumi am fost la câteva spectacole la Sala Nouă a Teatrului de Comedie de pe Sfânta Vineri. Nu e normal ca o mulțime de artiști și de oameni ce fac parte din echipele de producție să se plimbe de colo-colo ca să ne ofere artă, trăiri și emoții. Ar trebui să-i ajutăm, să facem ceva ca această clădire a Teatrului Evreiesc să fie reparată, consolidată în cel mai rapid mod cu putință.

Concret, ce ar trebui să facem? Să pistonăm autoritățile să ia măsuri urgente în cazul TES – scopul nostru imediat, pe de o parte; iar pe de altă parte să punem pe tapet situația generală în care se află clădirile istorice din capitală pentru ca acestea să beneficieze de atenția specială a edililor care ar trebui să le protejeze, astfel încât și generațiile viitoare să se bucure de frumusețea și istoria lor. Știu, o să-mi spuneți că nu sunt bani pentru așa ceva și nu avem o legislație bună în domeniu. Dar astea sunt amănunte. Important este Obiectivul. Dacă s-ar dori cu adevărat rezolvarea problemei…

P.S. Bugetul estimat al Primăriei Capitalei pentru anul 2014 este de 4,5 miliarde lei (1 miliard euro).
