Until earlier this year, tennis was one of the few sports bypassed by the scandal of match-rigging. In January, the white sport received its first blow yet: more players in the top 50 became suspicious of match fixing in favor of winnings from betting. Betting Mafia hit tennis as well, or so it seems!
How did it all begin?
Even before the beginning of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the Year, BBC and BuzzFeed published an investigation that shook up the tennis world: both media outlets accused that several players have arranged matches in favor of betting, and among them they were also winners of the Grand Slam tournaments. In total, the BBC and BuzzFeed identified top 16 players who had fixed matches during the last 10 years, and in this operation would have been involved the networks in Russia and Italy.
The scandal went to the roof when Novak Djokovic, ATP leader, admitted that he was asked to lose a match several years ago. The Serb would receive 130,000 euros if he agreed to lose a match in the first round at St. Petersburg Open. Obviously, he declined the offer and, in fact, he did not play that match, because he got injured. „I have not been approached directly, but by people who worked with me at the time, who were part of the team. Of course, I refused instantly.” said Djokovic.
And yet Djokovici is a suspect?
Even if he acknowledged and gave details about when he was contacted by the betting mafia, Djokovic’s involvement remained a question mark for many people. The Italian newspaper ‘Tuttosport’ argued that the current leader of the ATP had yet intentionally lost another match in 2007, at the Paris Masters. In that tournament, Novak was unexpectedly defeated by the Frenchman Fabrice Santoro. „There will always be speculation, particularly these days. I have nothing more to say. Until someone comes up with proof, everything will remain just a speculation.” countered Djokovic.
What names are known?
Not only BBC and BuzzFeed investigated the involvement of the betting mafia in tennis, but also a team of detectives employed by ATP. Both the publications and the detectives have declined to make public the names of players suspected of being involved, but the media „got out” a few names.
Richard Bloomfield managed a huge surprise in 2006 when he defeated Carlos Berlocq in three sets in the first round at Wimbledon. Richard was ranked 259 ATP, while his opponent was on 89. 340,000 pounds was the sum betted on Bloomfield’s victory in this match on a platform of online betting. Four years later, the same player would be winning at Newport, in a match against the Belgian Christophe Rochus. One million pounds was the amount betted on his success, at the exact same bookmaker fom 2006!
Matches involving players like Filippo Volandri, Potito Starace and Jurgen Melzer were also in the attention of the authorities, after huge betting was registered with the online and offline bookmakers. Moreover, Potito Starace was already suspended for life for match-rigging, but the decision was reversed on appeal, a few years ago.
3,6 million £ played at Betfair on a doubtful match
A match played at Sopot between Nikolay Davydenko and Martin Arguello in 2007 is also considered fishy. The Russian was the 4th ATP and had won the first set, had a break in the second one, but then he withdrew accusing an injury, so the Argentinian ranked on 87 was unexpectedly victorious. Betfair had bets of around 3,6 million pounds on Arguello’s victory! The operator subsequently canceled the bets played on Argentinian’s success.
Another name involved is Daniel Koellerer. The Austrian was suspended for life from the tennis court and admitted that he received offers between 50,000 and 100,000 dollars to fi matches in different tournaments, but he denied that he would have accepted them. Otherwise, the big names involved in this scandal are missing, and, probably, they will not be revealed too soon.
So, at the beginning of the year we have witnessed the disclosure of the tip of the iceberg in tennis match-rigging. Who knows what was not yet revealed to us, but we hope not to wait too long before we find out. The sport of tennis deserves to remain „white”.

Până la începutul acestui an, tenisul a fost unul din puținele sporturi ocolite de un scandal al meciurilor trucate. În luna ianuarie, sportul alb a primit, însă, prima lovitură: mai mulți jucători din top 50 au devenit suspecți de aranjare a meciurilor în favoarea obținerii unor câștiguri din pariuri. Mafia Pariurilor a lovit, se pare, și în tenis!
Cum a început totul?
Chiar înainte de startul Australian Open, primul turneu de Grand Slam al Anului, BBC și BuzzFeed publicau o investigație care cutremura lumea tenisului: cele două instituții media acuzau faptul că mai mulți jucători au aranjat meciuri pentru pariuri, iar printre aceștia s-ar afla și câștigători de turnee de Mare Șlem. În total, BBC și BuzzFeed au identificat 16 jucători din top 50 care au blătuit meciuri în ultimii 10 ani, iar în această operațiune ar fi fost implicate rețele din Rusia și Italia.
Scandalul a căpătat o amploare și mai mare în momentul în care Novak Djokovici, lider ATP, a recunoscut că i s-a propus să piardă un meci în urmă cu mai mulți ani. Sârbul ar fi primit 130,000 de euro dacă era de acord să piardă într-o partidă din primul tur la Sankt Petersburg Open. Evident, el a refuzat oferta și, de fapt, nu a mai jucat meciul respectiv deoarece se accidentase. „Nu am fost abordat direct, ci prin oamenii care lucrau cu mine la acea vreme, care erau în echipă. Bineînțeles, am refuzat instant.”, a explicat Djokovici.
Și totuși Djokovici e suspect?
Chiar dacă a recunoscut și a dat detalii despre momentul în care a fost contactat de Mafia Pariurilor, implicarea lui Djokovici a rămas un semn de întrebare pentru multe persoane. Cotidianul italian ”Tuttosport” a susținut că actualul lider din ATP ar fi pierdut totuși intenționat un alt meci, în 2007, la Mastersul din Paris. În acel turneu, Novak a fost învins neașteptat de francezul Fabrice Santoro. ”Mereu vor fi speculaţii, în special în aceste zile. Nu am mai multe de zis. Pînă nu vine cineva cu dovezi, totul va rămîne doar o speculaţie.”, a contracarat Djokovici.
Ce nume se cunosc
Nu doar BBC și Buzzfeed au investigat implicarea mafiei pariurilor în tenis, ci și o echipă de detectivi angajați de ATP. Atât publicațiile, cât și detectivii au evitat să facă publice numele jucătorilor suspectați de a fi implicați, însă în presă au ”transpirat” câteva nume.

Rusul era pe locul 4 ATP și câștigase primul set, făcuse break în cel de-al doilea, dar apoi s-a retras acuzând o accidentare, astfel că argentinianul clasat pe locul 87 s-a ales, în mod neașteptat, cu victoria. La BetFair se pariase în jur de 3,6 milioane de lire pe victoria lui Arguello! Operatorul a anulat ulterior pariurile jucate pe succesul argentinianului.
Un alt nume implicat este Daniel Kollerer. Așadar, la începutul anului am asistat la devoalarea vârfului aisbergului in cazul meciurilor trucate din tenis. Cine, ce știe nu ni s-a dezvăluit, dar sperăm să nu așteptăm prea mult până vom afla. Tenisul merită să rămînă sportul „alb”.
