Dimetrios Georgios Synodinos, widely known as Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder, was one of the most famous names in the sport industry and an important bookmaker, too. Having accepted the analyst position at NFL offered by CBS, “The Greek” succeeds in giving the sport industry something that nobody has given it before: respect.
Snyder is born in 1918, in Steubenville, Ohio, with Greek origins, and gets used to bookmakers since adolescence. Though he initially invests in oil drilling and mining, these prove to be unprofitable, so Jimmy Snyder moves to Las Vegas in 1956 and he manages to lay the foundation of the weekly football bookmaker agency. This is the cornerstone of his career as a morning football show producer, The NLF Today, hosted by CBS. For 12 years the show has attracted wide audience, being characterised by a perfect combination of reportage, analysis, forecasts, humour and talent. Important figure, “The Greek” was regarded as one of the most popular characters of the time, ensuring the show’s success and playing a role in the gambling industry’s development.
The end of his career as a presenter in 1988 was a controversial one, Snyder got fired by CBS Sports due to a comment considered racist. The statement that black athletes are superior to the white ones because of their physical qualities got from the age of slavery put an end to a show with tradition.
According to The New York Times, the presenter expressed his regret about the comment that he had made, considering it “reckless”. Although the CBS team was in favor of Snyder’s getting fired, there were opposite views, too. So, on November 10th, 2009, ESPN channel aired the documentary called “The Legend of Jimmy the Greek”, a production of Fritz Mitchell. Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Phyllis George of The NFL Today were among the commentators. Despite the controversy, Irv Cross mentioned that he would never thought of Snyder as a racist during their long working together. The documentary of the “30 for 30” series gave Snyder the credit of the pioneering role in the media coverage of the poker tours.
The comment on the black athletes wasn’t the only incident. Snyder’s whole TV career was seen as litigious. Snyder used to bet on some players, which led to critics blaming him for encouraging games of chance. According to his autobiography entitled “Jimmy the Greek”, he bet 10 thousand dollars during general election on Harry S. Truman, in preference to Thomas Dewey. His intuition wasn’t wrong. Later, during an interview, Snyder explained his choice saying that Dewey had a moustache and that these kind of men inspire confidence among American women.
Due to a surprising situation, Jimmy’s notoriety crossed the boundaries of the US in 1974, by means of a comment made by the famous boxer Muhammad Ali. During an interview, after having won the fight against George Foreman in the world championship for heavyweight, Ali looked into the camera and spoke to all those who doubted his performance: “Bow! All my critics to crawl, all of you take a bow!. If you want to know something about boxing, don’t go to experts in Las Vegas, don’t go to Jimmy the Greek. Come to Muhammad Ali”.
Fritz Mitchell, the one who knew Snyder in the intern position at The NLF Today, to make a documentary on him afterwards, describes him as an imposing personality. “When I first met Jimmy Snyder, I was intimidated by him. His strong smell of perfume, his massive, gold jewellery and his coarse way of speaking were enough to shock any young student”, says Mitchell. However, Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder has his place in the collective memory as the one who managed to support the gambling legitimacy, turning it from a job badly-spoken of, to one respected by society. Opțiunea sa era în favoarea celui din urmă, iar intuiția nu l-a înșelat. Snyder și-a explicat siguranța legată de trimful lui Truman ulterior, în cadrul unui interviu, motivând că Dewey avea mustață, iar bărbații cu mustață nu inspirau încredere femeilor americane.
Printr-o conjunctură surprinzătoare, notorietatea lui Jimmy a depășit granițele Statelor Unite în 1974, prin intermediul unui comentariu făcut de celebrul pugilist Muhammad Ali. În cadrul unui interviu, după câștigarea meciului cu George Foreman din campionatul mondial la categoria grea, Ali a privit în cameră și s-a adresat tuturor celor care îi puseseră la îndoială performanțele. ”Înclinați-vă! Toți criticii mei să se târască, voi toți să faceți o plecăciune. Dacă vreți să aflați ceva despre box, nu mergeți la experții din Las Vegas, nu mergeți la Jimmy the Greek. Veniți la Muhammad Ali.”
Fritz Mitchell, cel care l-a cunoscut pe Snyder din poziția de intern la The NFL Today, pentru ca mai apoi să realizeze un documentar despre el, îl descrie ca pe o personalitate impunătoare. ”Am fost intimidat când l-am întâlnit prima dată pe Jimmy Snyder. Mirosul pregnant al parfumului său, bijuteriile masive din aur și exprimarea grobiană ar fi fost de ajuns să șocheze orice puștan ieșit de pe băncile facultății”, povestește Mitchell. Totuși, Jimmy ”The Greek” Snyder rămâne în memoria colectivă ca cel care a reușit să afirme legitimitatea jocurilor de noroc, transformându-le dintr-o meserie hulită într-una respectată de societate.
