Few people can say that they had a significant financial contribution to the history of Las Vegas. Jerome D. Mack is among them. As President of the Bank of Las Vegas, he has been actively involved not only in the development of gambling, but also in education, politics and philanthropy.
Jerome was born between the two world wars, in 1920, in Albion, Michigan. He was the son of a chandler who would later become a banker. When he was nine years old, his parents decide to move to Las Vegas. After he finishes the studies at the University of California he is enlisted as a navigator in the army for the World War II.
Banker
Once the war was over, Jerome began to work alongside his father, within the Bank of Las Vegas. His father had founded the Bank together with other important names for the history of Las Vegas: Walter Cosgriff, Bob Kaltenborn, Jake Von Tobel, Bruce Beckley and Herb Jones. As known, the Bank of Las Vegas was the first bank which has agreed to make loans to casinos of the city. The first loan perfected by Jerome in this sense was awarded to Milton Prell, and he invested the money in the construction of the Sahara Casino. He continued to help finance other casinos that were still under construction, having a decisive contribution in the transformation of Las Vegas into the capital of gambling.
Jerome was not satisfied just to financially support casinos, but he also had managerial functions within those. He was President of the Riviera Hotel & Casino and the director of two other casinos: Four Queens and Dunes.
Meanwhile, Jerome engages in the development of education. Alongside Maude Frazier and Archie Grant he helps with the foundation of the „Nevada Southern” College, which would later become known as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Jerome and Parry, more than business partners
Perhaps the most important business partner of Jerome D. Mack was E. Parry Thomas. The two had always shared the same visions, which made them business compatible. They were both of the opinion that the Bank loans granted to the casinos are one step ahead. They also decided to merge the Bank of Las Vegas with Valley Bank of Reno. The new Bank will have to bear the name Valley Bank of Nevada and was later acquired by Bank of America.
Another achievement of the two, was the lobby made to Bill Harrah, a legislator of the State of Nevada, to pass a bill to legalize and allow corporations to own casinos. This law was to put an end to corruption in Las Vegas and to apply more rules in this area, as well as greater transparency for the authorities.
In 1967, together with his trusted partner he was to donate 400-acre of land to the educational unit that he had founded, in order to expand the space dedicated to the school campus. Jerome and Parry also supported financially the construction of the University’s basketball arena. The hall bears today the name of „Thomas & Mack Center” to honor the names of the two businessmen who have invested in it. „I’m not saying this with ease: Jerry Mack and Parry Thomas have built Las Vegas ‘, the Senator Harry Reid was to declare in regard to the two friends and business partners.
An active person
There have been just a few moments in the life of Jerome when he did not have an occupation. That’s because he has always been an active person, involved in many areas. Including politics, where he supported the Democratic Party of Nevada through fundraising campaigns. Being an important personality of the Jewish community, he also served as President of Temple Beth Sholom, a Las Vegas synagogue. Within the synagogue he founded an elementary school which he dedicated to the memory of his father, who in the meantime had deceased. From 1959 to 1976 he was director of Israel Bonds Campaigns, whose purpose was to raise funds that would be directed towards the development of the State of Israel. As a reward, in 1973, the Israeli Prime Minister offered him two medals of honor for his efforts.
Jerome D. Mack had deceased on September 26th, 1998, after a prolonged battle with cancer. During his lifetime he also had financed the chair of cancer research within the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. ”A powerful force of my life, but also of the lives of many others had left. But this force will continue because this is the life that Jerome lived. It was a life that can never be ignored or forgotten „, said one of his friends during the funeral.

De puțini oameni se poate afirma că au avut o contribuție financiară semnificativă în istoria orașului Las Vegas. Printre ei se numără și Jerome D. Mack. Din postura sa de președinte al Bank of Las Vegas, s-a implicat activ nu doar în dezvoltarea gamblingului, ci și în educație, politică și filantropie.
Jerome s-a născut între cele două războaie mondiale, în 1920, la Albion, Michigan. A fost fiul unui negustor de mărunțișuri care mai târziu avea să devină bancher. Când împlinește nouă ani, părinții săi iau decizia de a se muta în Las Vegas. După ce termină studiile la Universitatea din California este înrolat ca navigator în armată pentru Cel De-al Doilea Război Mondial.

Odată sfârșit războiul, Jerome începe să lucreze alături de tatăl său, în cadrul Băncii din Las Vegas. Tatăl său fondase banca alături de alte nume importante din istoria Las Vegasului: Walter Cosgriff, Bob Kaltenborn, Jake Von Tobel, Bruce Beckley și Herb Jones. Așa cum se știe, Bank of Las Vegas a fost prima bancă ce a acceptat să facă împrumuturi cazinourilor din oraș. Primul împrumut perfectat de Jerome în acest sens a fost acordat lui Milton Prell, iar acesta a investit banii în construcția Cazinoului Sahara. A continuat să ajute financiar și alte cazinouri încă din perioada în care se aflau în construcție, având astfel o contribuție decisivă în transformarea orașului Las Vegas în capitala jocurilor de noroc.
Jerome nu s-a mulțumit doar să susțină financiar cazinourile, ci a ocupat și funcții de conducere în cadrul lor. A fost președinte al Riviera Hotel & Casino și a ocupat funcția de director la alte două cazinouri: Four Queens și Dunes.
Între timp, Jerome se implică și în dezvoltarea educației. Alături de Maude Frazier și Archie Grant ajută la fondarea Colegiului ”Nevada Southern”, care mai târziu avea să devină cunoscut ca Universitatea din Nevada, Las Vegas.
Jerome și Parry, mai mult decât parteneri de afaceri
Probabil cel mai important partener de afaceri pentru Jerome D. Mack a fost E. Parry Thomas. Cei doi împărtășeau mereu aceleași viziuni, ceea ce îi făcea compatabili în afaceri. Amândoi erau de părere că împrumuturile bancare făcute cazinourilor sunt un pas înainte. Tot ei au decis fuzionarea Bank of Las Vegas cu Valley Bank of Reno. Noua bancă avea să poarte numele Valley Bank of Nevada și avea să fie cumpărată mai târziu de Bank of America.
O altă realizare a celor doi a fost lobby-ul făcut la Bill Harrah, legislator al statului Nevada, pentru a trece o lege ce urma să legalizeze și să permită corporațiilor să dețină cazinouri. Trecerea acestei legi avea să pună capăt corupției din Las Vegas și avea să aplice mai multe reglementări în domeniu precum și o transparență mai mare către autorități.

Jerome și Parry au susținut financiar și construcția arenei de baschet a Universității. Sala poartă și azi numele ”Thomas & Mack Center” pentru a onora numele celor doi afaceriști care au investit în ea. ”Nu spun asta cu ușurință: Jerry Mack și Parry Thomas au construit Las Vegasul”, avea să declare senatorul Harry Reid despre cei doi prieteni și parteneri de afaceri.
O persoană activă
Au fost puține momente în viața lui Jerome în care nu a avut o ocupație. Asta deoarece a fost mereu o persoană activă care s-a implicat în multe domenii. Inclusiv în politică unde a susținut partidul democrat din Nevada, prin campanii de fundraising. Fiind o importantă personalitate a comunității evreiești, a servit și ca președinte al ”Temple Beth Sholom”, o sinagogă din Las Vegas. În cadrul acestei sinagogi a fondat o școală elementară pe care a dedicat-o memoriei tatălui său, decedat între timp. Între 1959 și 1976 a fost director al Israel Bonds Campaigns, al cărei scop a fost strângerea de fonduri ce aveau să fie direcționate spre dezvoltarea statului Israel. Drept răsplată, în 1973, prim-ministrul Israelului avea să îi ofere două medalii de onoare pentru eforturile sale.
Jerome D. Mack se stinge din viață pe 26 septembrie 1998, după o luptă îndelungată cu cancerul. În timpul vieții sale a finanțat inclusiv catedra de cercetare a cancerului din cadrul Universității Ebraice din Ierusalim. ”O forță puternică din viața mea, dar și a multor altor oameni a plecat. Dar această forță va continua deoarece aceasta este viața pe care Jerome a trăit-o. A fost o viață care nu poate fi ignorată sau uitată niciodată”, a afirmat unul din prietenii săi în timpul înmormântării.
