HELMUTH DUCKADAM: “One needs luck in life, for sure”HELMUTH DUCKADAM: “Cu siguranţă, ai nevoie de şansă în viaţă”

I joined recently in the privacy of the home of the Hero in Seville, Helmuth Duckadam, and we have had an interesting discussion about life, family and … gambling. What amazes me to this man, even now, is its modesty, the seriousness with which deals with things, but also his fine humor. His calm but baritone voice, sounds comforting in your ears and you feel like you never want to leave the place.

If you were to describe yourself would you include the phrase „I am a lucky guy” or it is not the case? Do you believe in the saying „one makes his own fortune” or do you believe in hazard?

I believe in hazard, I think I’m a lucky guy, firstly I have met women who loved me and I believe that is a thing of chance. Now I have a beautiful wife who loves me, we have a family just as beautiful; we have a 4-year-old girl that we love. I think luck plays a very important role in life.

What needs Romania of our days in order to become prosperous?  

Here I would answer with a joke, I don’t remember where I heard it: „Romania is a beautiful country, unfortunately is inhabited”. I think that first of all we need a different mindset, a German one, we need to be serious as the Germans, and I refer here to all people, from the first man of the country to the last.  The people on the bottom of our society always complain that nobody does anything for them, but they really don’t do anything for themselves, politicians promise that they will do, but in reality they just lie, I was inevitably disgusted by that and convinced me not vote anymore even though for 20 years I’ve voted in all elections.

In what category do you include gambling? Vice or fun?

I think it can be included in both categories, for me gambling is a fun, but for others is clearly a vice. I have friends who lose every penny to gambling regardless of the game, whether we’re talking about sports betting, slots or other games. I personally consider gambling a form of fun and take it as such.

Now poker is in fashion. What is your perception of the today’s modern Poker? Is it just good luck? Is it just a game, or do you is it more than that?

I have known 5 card poker too that is slightly more dangerous than Texas Hold’em and I must say I enjoy it more; I can say that poker is a game of luck also because whatever talent you have, if you don’t have some luck, you will loose.

Have you ever been in a casino? What is your impression on its atmosphere?

In Romania, only once, when I attended the opening of a casino at the Hotel Astoria in Arad, Miss Hungary of that time joined me at that opening. Also, I can say that I have had the privilege to go to casinos in the U.S., I was in both Arizona and Las Vegas. I liked it in Arizona more than in Vegas, possibly due to the fact that in Arizona I won (he laughs). The atmosphere is fantastic, but you have to know how to limit yourself, I for example, play only $ 20 and if I was winning I would continue to play, if not, I would stop.

Why do you think that there is a lot of prejudice about all gambling activities from our country? What is your opinion on this matter, can you consider them a form of leisure, as, let’s say going to the mall or at a show with friends or do you think it’s something else?

I believe that one can have a lot of fun, of course, but one must afford it, not everyone does. There are also very passionate people who come from other countries to play in our casinos; on the other hand, there are many people who are having fun in the Casino without risking too much.

People who haven’t entered a casino, how do not know what is happening there, they have prejudices, rather for lack of information.

Do you seize the moment or are you the calculated, rational type that often thinks of the future?

I am very calculated and rational; I always try to make provision for me and my family. Of course, there are times when seize and the moment, but they are more rare.

Does one need luck in life?

Clearly you need very much luck too, for example if I have a period of time when everything goes very well then I expect something bad to happen. I had, for example, a period of one month when things were great and one day I came home very happy and my wife asked me why, I had received a traffic ticket, so the bad luck was gone (he laughs). Another example, last year, it was a very good year for me and to the end of the year I experienced problems with my hand. One needs luck in life, for sure.

How does an easeful day of your life look like?

I can say that I have had many easeful days, for two and a half years the patron of Steaua gave me the chance to be the image of the team, I make my own work schedule, going to various TV shows or events and the rest of the time I am with family. I can say that I am very ok very easeful and I do what I love.Am intrat de curând în intimitatea casei Eroului de la Sevilla, Helmuth Duckadam, și am purtat o discuție interesantă despre viață, familie și…gambling. Ce mă uimește mereu la omul acesta, inclusiv acum, este modestia sa, seriozitatea cu care abordează lucrurile, dar și umorul fin pe care-l are. Vocea sa calmă, dar baritonală, răsună liniștitor în urechile noastre și parcă nu am mai pleca de acolo…

Dacă ar fi să va descrieti propria persoană ati folosi și sintagma “sunt un tip norocos” sau nu e cazul? Sunteti adeptul vorbei “Omul își face norocul cu mâna lui” sau credeti în hazard?

Nu, cred în hazard, cred că sunt un tip norocos, am întâlnit în primul rând femei care m-au iubit şi acest lucru cred că ţine de noroc. La ora actuală am o soţie frumoasă care mă iubeşte, avem o familie la fel de frumoasă, am o fetiţă de 4 ani pe care o adorăm. Cred că în viaţă norocul joacă un rol foarte important.

Ce îi lipsește României de astăzi ca să aibă parte de prosperitate?

Aici aş răspunde cu o glumă pe care nu ştiu de unde am auzit-o: “România este o ţară frumoasă, păcat că este locuită”. Cred că în primul rând avem nevoie de altă mentalitate, una nemţească, să fim serioși ca nemţii, aici fac referire la toţi oamenii, de la primul om al ţării până la cei mai de jos.  Cei de jos se plâng întodeauna că nimeni nu face nimic pentru ei, dar ei de fapt nu fac nimic pentru ei înșişi, politicienii promit că vor face, dar de fapt ei doar mint, ceea ce inevitabil m-a dezgustat şi m-a convins să nu mai merg la vot chiar dacă timp de 20 de ani am fost la toate alegerile.

În ce categorie includeţi jocurile de noroc? Viciu sau distracţie?

Cred că pot fi incluse în ambele categorii, pentru mine jocurile de noroc sunt o distracţie, dar pentru alţii sunt clar un viciu. Am prieteni care pierd fiecare bănuţ la jocuri de noroc indiferent de joc, fie că vorbim despre pariuri sportive, “păcănele” sau alte jocuri. Eu am rămas doar la a considera jocurile de noroc o formă de distracţie şi le iau ca atare.

Acum la modă este pokerul. Care este percepția dumneavoastră asupra pokerului modern de astăzi? Este vorba doar de noroc? Este doar un joc sau îl considerati mai mult decât atât?

Eu am cunoscut şi pokerul cu 5 cărţi care este puţin mai periculos decât Texas Hold’em care trebuie să spun că îmi place mai mult şi, de asemenea, pot zice că şi pokerul este tot un joc de noroc pentru că indiferent de talentul pe care îl ai, dacă nu ai şi puţin noroc, te numeşti pierzător.

Aţi fost vreodată în vreun cazino? Ce impresie v-a făcut atmosfera de acolo?

Am fost în România o singură dată, acum mulţi ani când am participat la deschiderea unui  cazino la Hotel Astoria din Arad, alături de mine la deschiderea acelui cazino a fost şi Miss Ungaria de la acea vreme. De asemenea, pot spune că am avut privilegiul să merg în cazinourile din SUA, am fost în Arizona şi în Las Vegas. Mai mult mi-a plăcut în Arizona decât în Vegas, posibil din cauza faptului că în Arizona am câştigat (râde). Atmosfera este una fantastică, dar trebuie să şti să te limitezi, eu de exemplu jucam doar 20$ şi dacă eram în câştig mai jucam, dacă nu, mă opream.

De ce credeti că există foarte multe prejudecăți despre toate activitățile de gambling de la noi din țară? Care este opinia dumneavoastră în această privință, poți să le consideri o formă de petrecere a timpului liber, ca și cum te-ai duce la mall cu prietenii sau la un spectacol sau credeti că e vorba de altceva?

Consider că te poţi distra foarte bine doar că, desigur, trebuie să îţi permiţi, nu toată lumea îşi permite. De asemenea, sunt oameni foarte pasionaţi care vin din alte ţări să joace în cazinourile noastre, sunt, pe de altă parte, mulţi români care se distrează foarte bine în cazino fără să rişte prea mult.

Prejudecăţile le au oamenii care nu au fost într-un cazino care nu ştiu ce se întamplă acolo, mai exact nu sunt informaţi.

Trăiți clipa sau sunteți un tip calculat, rațional, care se gândește des la viitor?

Sunt foarte calculat şi raţional, încerc întodeauna să îmi asigur viitorul meu şi al familiei mele. Am desigur momente când trăiesc şi clipa, dar acestea sunt mai rare.

În viaţă ai nevoie şi de şansă?

Clar ai nevoie foarte mult şi de şansă, mie de exemplu dacă am o perioadă când îmi merge foarte bine mă aştept să se întample şi ceva rău. Am avut, de exemplu, o perioadă de o lună de zile când a mers totul foarte bine şi am venit într-o zi fericit şi mă întreabă soţia ce am păţit, luasem o amendă de circulaţie, deci se spărsese ghinionul (râde). Un alt exemplu, anul trecut, mi-a mers foarte bine şi pe final am avut probleme cu mâna. Cu siguranţă ai nevoie de şansă în viaţă.

Cum arată o zi liniştită din viaţa dumneavoastră?

Pot spune că am multe zile liniştite, de doi ani jumătate patronul Stelei mi-a oferit şansa de a fi imaginea echipei, îmi fac programul de muncă aşa cum imi doresc, merg la diverse emisiuni tv, evenimente şi în rest stau cu familia. Pot spune că sunt super ok, foarte liniştit şi fac ceea ce îmi place.
