Whether they are gambling or poker movies or whether their action simply takes place in the background of a casino or in the city of Las Vegas, there are also some excellent movies and some bad movies, but after all it does not matter how good they are, the important thing is that it is worth “risking” and continuing our journey through the world of movies, for the quietest sound of coins “delivered” at a doll slot win or a cross-eye look between two poker players! We suggest, you choose.

Diggstown(1992)

Gabriel Caine (played by James Woods ), a ex-con man, is released from prison in Winfield, Georgia and immediately gets to work on his next scam. Caine and his partner, Fitz (played by Oliver Platt), travel to a small town not far from the prison: Diggstown, a city obsessed with boxing. The name of the cityis given by Charles Macum Diggs – the heavyweight champion – and who is now confined to a wheel-chair.

Fitz arrives first and takes several well-heeled locals in a high-stakes poker game, and then Gabriel follows to make a sporting proposition to John Gillon (Bruce Dern), the city’s wealthiest citizen. Gabriel tells Gillon he has a boxer that can beat any ten opponents Gillon can line up, in the same day. Gillon takes the challenge and places a big enough wager to make matters even more interesting, but now Gabriel has to convince Honey Ray Palmer (played by Louis Gossett Jr.), a middle-aged former boxer who has been taken for a ride by Gabriel in the past, to go along with this scheme.

After some initial reluctance, Palmer agrees to participate and starts to train for the fight. Caine and Gillon agree to various conditions of the bet, with “one day” being 24 full hours and “Diggstown fighters” being able to come from any surrounding area of Olivair County. A loan shark backs Caine’s bet, with the understanding that his health and welfare will be riding on the outcome.

Caine discovers that Gillon’s treachery (and his bank account) goes deeper than Diggstown people know. As his manager, Gillon drugged Diggs during a fight so that Gillon could collect on the opponent’s long odds. Diggs suffered irreversible brain damage as a result.

With help from Emily Forester (Heather Graham) – the sister of a large and ill-tempered fighter Gabriel met while behind bars, it is learned that Gillon has more than $1.5 million in assets. Caine tricks him into risking all of it. Now it is up to Honey Roy Palmer to defeat all 10 of Diggstown’s men.

The fights begin with:

• Buck Holland, who is played by former Heavyweight Boxing Contender Rocky Pepeli who puts up a good fight, Palmer barely beats him.

• Slim Busby, who like his brother, Hambone, has been bribed by Caine to take a dive.

• Billy Hargrove (played by a young James Caviezel), who is easily beat.

• Sam Lester, who is secretly given a laxative before the fight and eventually runs from the ring.

• Hambone Busby, who, like his brother, has been bribed to take a dive. Gillon, however, threatens to kill Hambone’s brother, Slim, unless he is victorious in the ring. Hambone fights a vicious fight, but ultimately loses. Slim is indeed found murdered.

Palmer is enraged. His next fight is with Sonny Hawkins, who is easily dispatched. Robby Gillon, the son of John Gillon, approaches the ring next, but then backs out under instructions from his father. His cowardice is regarded as a forfeit. Frank Mangrum officially loses to disqualification after kicking Palmer in the groin, then hitting the referee. Tank Miller, a gargantuan fighter, is next. He puts up a good fight, but a tiring Palmer eventually beats him.

That brings up Diggstown’s best man, Hammerhead Hagan, the only fighter ever to actually beat Palmer during their professional careers. He is brought in as a surprise ringer. Gillon moved him in as a county resident just before the bet rules were established, meaning that Hagan can legally fight. The bout is one-sided. Palmer looks done for, but he gets new motivation after seeing Diggs, who is sitting courtside, move his hand slightly (which he interprets as a show of support). Caine, not wanting to see his friend die, attempts to throw in the towel, but Palmer catches it and throws it back. Palmer rallies to knock out his opponent.

Palmer, Caine and Fitz begin their celebration of this miraculous feat. They are cut short by Gillon, who notes that his son never entered the ring -– therefore, only nine fights have transpired. The true tenth fighter is then introduced: Minoso Torres, a tough-as-nails boxer who ruled the boxing underground in the prison from which Caine was recently released. No one has ever defeated him. Gillon admonishes Caine with: „Never try to hustle a hustler.”

An exhausted Palmer is no match for Torres. But just when all looks lost, Caine whistles at Torres, gets his attention, straightens his tie and does a thumbs-down gesture (copying a move Gillon did earlier). Torres drops his gloves and invites Palmer to hit him, hitting the canvas, knocked out. Caine was expecting such a trick from Gillon and bribed Torres long ago for a moment like this. Gillon has lost everything. Calm at first, he snaps and pulls a gun. His son, Robby, tries to intervene and Gillon smacks him. Palmer then grabs Gillon and prepares to deck him. Instead, he turns to Hambone, claiming, „My hands hurt.” Hambone gladly obliges and delivers Gillon a powerful knockout blow.

Caine congratulates Palmer: „What you did,” he says, „couldn’t be done.” To which Palmer replies, „Now, you motivate me”.

Poolhall Junkies (2002)

Johnny Doyle (played by Mars Callahan) was a teenaged orphan when Joe (played by Chazz Palminteri) took him under his wing and taught him everything there is to know about shooting pool. Johnny became a genius with a cue, but while he dreamed of becoming a respected professional billiards player, Joe preferred to keep him working along the lower rungs of pool hustling. When Johnny learns just how far Joe has gone to keep him down, Johnny breaks away from him, but Joe and his thugs take revenge against Johnny by breaking his wrists.

After an ultimatum from his girlfriend Tara (Alison Eastwood), Johnny finally commits to a „real” job in the construction business, but is soon miserable there. He finds himself spending most of his time with his younger brother Danny (Michael Rosenbaum) who it seems is following in his footsteps on the road to a life Johnny left when he broke from Joe.

As for Joe, he is bent on revenge for the beating he took, and soon he has a new protégé Brad (Rick Schroder) who is just as good if not better than Johnny. And he’s got his eye on Johnny’s brother.

The two play a high-stakes game of pool which ends in a huge debt owed to Joe, and soon Johnny finds that his brother is in jail for trying to steal the money he owes. The only way out for Johnny is to play Brad, which results in a „race to nine” showdown that pits two of the greatest players against each other for large sums of money, and Johnny and Danny’s lives.

The game comes down to a very difficult shot for Brad. While calculating how to take the shot, Johnny provokes Brad by telling him how easy the shot is and how he would pay him to take it for him. Johnny takes the shot but doesn’t sink the final ball. As Brad prepares to take the winning shot, Johnny stops him. Since he had taken Brad’s shot for him, it is now Johnny’s turn. Johnny easily sinks the last ball and wins the game, using hustling techniques he learned from Joe to do so. In the end, the movie ends when Johnny start to playing in the professional circuit.

Thismoviewas the lastforRodSteiger. The film didn’t see theatrical release until nearly nine months after his death.

 Fie că abordează direct teme legate de jocuri de noroc, poker sau sunt pur şi simplu setate pe fundalul unui cazinou  sau al orașului Las Vegas există filme excelente și filme proaste, dar în definitiv nu contează cum sunt, ci important este că merită să „riscăm” și să continuăm periplul prin lumea filmelor fie și pentru cel mai în surdină sunet de monezi „livrate” la un câștig banal la sloturi sau o privire piezișă între doi jucători de poker! Noi propunem, voi alegeți.

Diggstown(1992)

Gabriel Caine (jucat de James Woods), un fost escroc, este eliberat din închisoarea din Winfield, Georgia, şi  acesta începe imediat să își pregătească următoarea înşelătorie. Caine şi partenerul său, Fitz (jucat de Oliver Platt), călătoresc într-un mic oraş aflat în apropierea închisorii: Diggstown, un oraş obsedat de box. Numele oraşului a fost dat după Charles Macum Diggs – campion la categoria grea – şi care acum este obligat să stea într-un scaun cu rotile.

Fitz ajunge primul şi angrenează mai mulți localnici înstăriți într-un joc de poker cu mize mari, iar apoi sosește și Gabriel care îi face o propunere lui John Gillon (Bruce Dern), cel mai bogat cetăţean din oraş. George îi spune lui Gillon că are un boxer care poate să bată oricare zece oponenţi aduși de Gillon, în aceeaşi zi. Acesta acceptă provocarea şi pentru a face lucrurile și mai interesante, pune un pariu destul de mare, dar acum, Gabriel trebuie să îl convingă pe Honey Ray Palmer (jucat de Louis Gossett Jr.), un fost boxer de vârstă mijlocie, pe care în trecut Gabriel l-a ajutat, să se alăture acestei înșelătorii.

După ceva reticenţă iniţială, Palmer este de acord să participe şi începe să se antreneze pentru luptă. Caine şi Gillon cad de acord asupra câtorva condiţii ale pariului, unde „o zi”, va reprezenta 24 de ore întregi, iar „Luptătorii din Diggstown”, puteau să vină din orice zonă aflată în jurul comitatului Olivair. Un împrumut de la cămătari va susţine pariul lui Caine, cu înţelegerea că sănătatea şi bunăstarea acestuia vor depinde de rezultatul final.

Caine descoperă că trădarea lui Gillon (şi contul său bancar) sunt mai adânci decât își închipuie locuitorii orașului Diggstown. Gillon, fost manager al lui Diggs, l-a drogat pe acesta în timpul unei lupte astfel încât Gillon să poată câștiga de pe urma cotelor mai bune ale adversarului. Ca rezultat, Diggs a suferit leziuni cerebrale ireversibile.

Cu ajutorul lui Emily Forester (Heather Graham) – sora unui luptător mare şi irascibil, pe care Gabriel l-a cunoscut pe când se afla în spatele gratiilor, se află că Gillon are peste 1.5 milioane de dolari în bunuri. Caine îl păcălește pe acesta să le riște pe toate. Acum totul depinde de Honey Roy Palmer, care trebuie să îi învingă pe toți cei 10 oameni din Diggstown.

Lupta începe cu:

• Buck Holland, care este jucat de fostul jucător de box de categorie grea Rocky Pepeli, care se luptă cu îndârjire, însă Palmer îl învinge.

• Slim Busby, care la fel ca fratele său, Hambone, a fost mituit de Caine să piardă.

• Billy Hargrove (jucat de un James Caviezel tânăr), care este învins cu ușurință.

• Sam Lester, căruia i se dă în secret un laxativ înainte de luptă şi în cele din urmă părăsește ringul fugind.

• Hambone Busby, care, ca și fratele său, a fost mituit să piardă meciul. Cu toate acestea, Gillon ameninţă că îl va omorâ pe fratele lui Hambone, Slim, dacă acesta nu iese victorios din ring. Hambone luptă crâncen, dar în cele din urmă pierde. Slim este într-adevăr găsit mort.

Palmer este ca turbat. Următoarea sa luptă este cu Sonny Hawkins, care este expediat cu uşurinţă. Robby Gillon, fiul lui John Gillon, se apropie de ring după aceea, dar apoi se retrage la instrucţiunile tatălui său. Laşitatea lui este considerată abandon. Frank Mangrum pierde oficial fiind descalificat după ce îl lovește pe Palmer în zona inghinală, lovindu-l apoi și pe arbitru. Urmează Tank Miller, un luptător feroce. El luptă bine, dar obosit, Palmer îl bate în cele din urmă.

Și cu aceasta vine rândul celui mai bun om al orașului Diggstown să urce în ring, Hammerhead Hagan, singurul luptător care l-a învins vreodată pe Palmer pe parcursul carierei sale de profesionist. El este adus ca o surpriză. Gillon l-a mutat, făcându-l rezident al zonei chiar înainte de stabilirea regulilor pariului, ceea ce înseamnă că legal, Hagan poate lupta. Meciul devine dezechilibrat. Palmer pare învins, dar își găsește din nou motivaţia văzându-l pe Diggs, care îi face uşor semn cu mâna de pe margine (semn pe care îl interpretează ca pe un sprijin). Caine, care nu dorește să își vadă prietenul mort, încearcă să arunce în ring prosopul, dar Palmer îl prinde şi îl aruncă înapoi. Palmer își face oponentul knock-out în final.

Palmer, Caine și Fitz încep să se bucure de această reușită miraculoasă. Sunt întrerupți de Gillon, care spune că fiul său nu a intrat niciodată în ring – prin urmare, au avut loc numai nouă lupte. Și apoi îl prezintă pe cel de-al zecelea luptător: Minoso Torres, un boxer puternic, care domină lumea subterană a boxului din închisoarea din care Caine fusese eliberat recent. Nimeni nu îl învinsese vreodată. Gillon îl avertizează pe Caine spunând: „Nu încerca niciodată să păcălești un escroc.”

Epuizat, Palmer, nu îi poate face față lui Torres. Dar, tocmai când totul pare pierdut, Caine fluieră la Torres, îi captează atenţia şi îi face un semn dezaprobator (copiind un gest pe care Gillon îl făcuse mai devreme). Torres își aruncă mănușile şi îl invită pe Palmer să îl lovească, decizie care îl face KO. Caine se aştepta la un astfel de șiretlic din partea lui Gillon şi l-a mituit pe Torres cu mult timp în urmă, pentru un moment ca acesta. Gillon a pierdut totul. Calm la început, acesta izbucnește şi scoate un pistol. Fiul său, Robby, încearcă să intervină şi Gillon îl lovește. Apoi Palmer îl prinde pe Gillon şi se pregăteşte să îl lovească. În schimb, acesta se întoarce către Hambone, spunând „mă dor mâinile.” Cu plăcere, Hambone se conformează şi îi dă lui Gillon o puternică lovitură de knock-out.

Caine îl felicită pe Palmer: „Ceea ce ai făcut tu,” spune acesta, „nu putea fi făcut.” La care Palmer răspunde, „Acum, mă motivezi”.

Poolhall Junkies (2002)

Johnny Doyle (jucat de Mars Callahan) era un adolescent orfan atunci când Joe (jucat de Chazz Palminteri) l-a luat sub aripa sa şi l-a învăţat tot ce știa despre biliard. Johnny a devenit un geniu al sportului cu tacul, dar în timp ce acesta visa să devină un respectat jucător profesionist de biliard, Joe prefera să îl țină blocat la meciuri în lumea inferioară a biliardului. Când Johnny află cât de departe a mers Joe pentru pentru a îl ţine jos, Johnny se desparte de acesta, dar Joe şi huliganii lui se răzbună pe Johnny rupându-i încheieturile de la mâini.

După un ultimatum primit de la prietena lui Tara (Alison Eastwood), Johnny se angajează în cele din urmă la un loc de muncă „real”, în domeniul construcţiilor, dar în curând devine nefericit aici. El își dă seama că își petrece majoritatea timpului cu fratele său mai mic, Danny (Michael Rosenbaum), care se pare că îi calcă pe urme, îndreptându-se către viața pe care Johnny a lăsat-o în spate atunci când s-a rupt de Joe.

Cât despre Joe, acesta are gânduri de răzbunare şi în curând îl va avea pe noul său protejat pentru asta, Brad (Rick Schroder), care este la fel de bun, dacă nu mai bun decât Johnny. Și îl are în vedere și pe fratele lui Johnny.

Cei doi joacă o partidă de billiard pe mize mari care se termină cu o imensă datorie către Joe, iar la scurt timp Johnny află că fratele său se află în închisoare pentru că a încercat să fure banii pe care îi datorează. Singura scăpare pentru Johnny este aceea de a juca cu Brad, într-un joc „primul la bila 9”, o confruntare între doi dintre cei mai mari jucători pe o sumă imensă de bani și viețile lui Johnny și Danny aflate în joc.

Jocul se finalizează cu o lovitură foarte dificilă pentru Brad. În timp ce acesta calcula lovitura, Johnny îl provoacă spunându-i cât de ușoară este lovitura și că el l-ar plăti să o execute în locul lui. Johnny lovește, dar nu introduce ultima bilă. În timp ce Brad se pregătește să dea lovitura câștigătoare, Johnny îl oprește. Pentru că Johnny a lovit în locul lui Brad, acum era rândul lui Johnny să joace. Johnny bagă cu ușurință ultima bilă și câștigă jocul, folosind viclenia învățată de la Joe. În cele din urmă, filmul se termină când Johnny începe să joace în circuitul profesionist.

Acesta a fost ultimul film a lui RodSteiger. Filmul nu a fost lansat decât după aproape nouă luni de la decesul acestuia.
