BRAG, the ancestor of poker

The card game Brag is said to be the precursor to today’s poker. Brag was invented in the UK and has never lost its popularity, ranking 4th in the British preferences in a 1981 survey by card manufacturer Waddingtons.

Brag

General Information

Brag is played with 52 cards (no jokers), clockwise, and involves the ability to count cards and calculate the chances of success. It is part of the family of card games in which you can also win by bluffing, which is why it is so similar to poker. Only instead of 5 cards, players are dealt 3 cards each. It is good for 4 or 8 players to participate in the game.

Brag Rules

The classic Brag game is a three-bet game, with players betting 3 times, one for each phase of the game. Before the first deal, there is the Ante, where players place their bet. 3 cards are dealt to each player in turn, turning the last card dealt to each player face up.

The player to the dealer’s left acts first. The player has the option to place a bet or to fold and be eliminated for the round. Play moves to the left, with players being able to match the previous bet, raise the previous bet, or fold.

When a player folds, the cards are placed on the bottom of the remaining deck from the deal.

Once the round is down to two players, one player has the option to bet double the previous bet and announce that they want to see the other player’s cards. Once the player’s cards are seen, the winner of the hand is determined.

The winning player will collect the chips from the pot in the middle. Dealing the cards moves to the next player, who will deal the next hand without shuffling the deck.

How to play Brag

In the order in which they received their cards, players must say brag (in English – “I brag”) and place a bet. If a player “brags”, they can be challenged by another player who equals or increases the bet. If two players want to challenge each other, the oldest has priority (at least that was the case when the game was invented in the 1800s). After placing bets, both reveal their hands.

The ranking of winning hands is as follows:

– Royal pair (prial). The best is the set of threes, then Aces, K-K-K, Q-Q-Q… and so on up to 2-2-2

– Running flash, is a suit of 3 cards of the same suit

– Run, these are consecutive different cards of different suits

– Flush, or suit, different cards of the same suit (see how it starts to look more and more like today’s poker)

– Pair, is exactly like in poker, for example two Q cards and a 10. For example, 9-9-3 beats 8-8-K, which in turn beats a hand 8-8-J

– High card, is when you have a “cabbage” in your hand, and your highest card beats your opponent’s highest card. Ace is considered the highest. Then K, Q, J and so on.

Conclusion

Brag is a precursor to poker that has not lost its charm over the centuries, being a game that can be played with family or friends.
