Argentina’s gambling law sparks Church and AFA conflict

A dispute has arisen in Argentina between the Catholic Church and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) over a proposed law to regulate online gambling.

AFA

The Church supports a potential ban on gambling advertising in sports, while football authorities warn it could harm the industry financially.

Reflecting the teachings of the late Pope Francis, himself Argentinian, the Church has expressed concern about the growth of online betting, labelling it a threat that fuels addiction, especially among youth.

In a letter to the Senate, Bishops urged lawmakers to swiftly pass the Bill, cautioning that “Every smartphone has become a casino,” and criticizing the “intense pressure from economic interests” to prevent restrictions on gambling promotions. Football officials, however, vocally oppose the measure.

Javier Mendez Cartier, an AFA Executive Committee member, stated during a Senate Committee hearing that banning betting sponsorships on kits, stadiums and broadcasts would cause a “historic financial blow”, emphasizing that clubs are dedicated to safeguarding young people and not solely driven by commercial aims.

The AFA contends that betting sponsorships are a vital revenue source, underpinning the entire football ecosystem. The proposed law, already passed by the Chamber of Deputies, intends to regulate the advertising, promotion and operation of online gambling, prohibit access for those under 18 and minimize public exposure to gambling triggers that lead to addiction.

If enacted, the legislation would limit gambling advertisements on social networks, digital platforms, billboards and all audiovisual media, including team apparel, sports facilities and players. This would mean that Argentine football broadcasts, the AFA and the national team could no longer feature betting company sponsors.

The outcome of this clash between the Church and the AFA could significantly impact the future of gambling advertising in Argentine sports, balancing moral considerations with economic realities.
