You and PokerStars have been a team for many years now. What are the values that you have in common and connect you?

Well, what drew me to PokerStars initially is that it was the biggest, the best, the most innovative, top notch customer support and software. As for values, PokerStars built it’s brand by being a site that listens to player feedback and creates and implements events globally both live and online.

What are the main satisfactions that poker has brought to you?

Freedom! I am able to live my dream life as a result of playing poker and nothing is more satisfying than that.

Your fame has gone beyond the world of poker. You are a real star, in the true meaning of the word. You are most certainly acknowledged and admired by people who have no connection with poker whatsoever. How do you cope with this glory? What are the pluses and minuses of living the life of a star?

I have people around me that I’ve been friends with well before I was ever a „star” and I’m able to have a pretty private life when I’m home in Vegas. I don’t have a problem at all dealing with it, but I guess I would say that when you are in the limelight anything you do is under a lot more scrutiny. People may judge you more harshly for a small misstep, despite them only knowing you from your TV persona.

If you were to choose another country – apart from the USA – as your country of residence, what would that be?

That’s an easy one. I was born in Canada and love the city of Toronto. If I had to move that would be the easiest and most logical place for me to go.

The job of a professional poker player can be stressful. There are poker pros that cashed in massive sums of money in various tournaments, but have already withdrawn. You’ve been an active poker player for a long time now. Have you ever considered a possible retirement?

The beautiful thing about poker is that I never actually have to retire. I enjoy playing, and I don’t think that will change over the next 40 years. Doyle Brunson is 84 years old now and he still plays in the highest stakes cash games in Vegas.

If you could go back in time, would you start playing poker once again or would you choose another job? And if you were to choose another job, what would that be and why?

I think I did alright with my choice to play poker so it would be pretty foolish to choose differently now.  If I were to have to choose anything else, I would likely have invested more time in acting and writing films.

Which are your deepest regrets in terms of poker?

I don’t really live with regret, honestly, but I do feel like my WSOP results should have been better over my career than they have been. I would like to have 9 or 10 WSOP Bracelets by now and I’m only at 6.

Could you please describe the most interesting hand you have ever played in a poker game? During what tournament was it, and who were your rivals for the poker chips?

It was 2003 Showdown at the Sands and it was a televised event where myself and Freddie Deeb got heads up. On the river, he bet and I was pretty sure he had a strong hand, AK for the highest pair. I also knew Freddie didn’t think I bluffed very much, so I decided to make a big raise on the river hoping he would put me on a better hand and fold. He finally folded and showed me exactly AK! I decided that it would be good for me to show him the bluff and turn the tide in the match, so I turned over the A7 for a total bluff. It worked, and I went on to win the tournament.

Do you have a poker idol? Who is this person?

I admire lots of players but I don’t think I’ve ever had a poker idol exactly.

What do you think about poker these days, across the world? Is it on the right track?

I think there are a lot of exciting things happening in poker now and in a lot of ways we are on the right track. Poker Central, a 24-hour poker network launched and is doing quite well, and also a new innovation called the GPL (Global Poker League) has launched and people seem excited about that.

Considering your qualities, if you were to choose between being a politician and having a career in television, what would you prefer?

The problem with being a politician is that it’s very difficult to be honest and that turns me off. I enjoy doing TV and film so I would go with that.

Which are the main trends in poker these days, in your opinion?

Well, high roller events would have to top the list. We are seeing more and more really big buy in tournaments and they only continue to grow. It’s amazing, as most people could have never predicted we would be having 100k buy in events regularly.

What do you think will happen on a global level: will the player field grow and the buy-in lower? Or will the player numbers come to a halt (or decrease) and the buy-in grow?

The biggest trend we’ve noticed is that the bigger buyins have gotten even bigger, while the lower limit buy in events continue to bring in really big numbers. The area that seems to be lacking is that middle ground, say $5k-$10k buy in events. They are too rich for the low limit grinder, and not as appealing to the high rollers as these big 100k buy in events.

Which are the most daring targets you’ve set for yourself, for the next 5 years?

Each year I write a blog on www.fullcontactpoker.com where I list my goals for the year, and some of them are quite lofty but that’s how I like it. I have some ideas for a new show I want to create, I also have plans outside of poker to bring NHL hockey to Las Vegas.După mai bine de 6 ani, Daniel Negreanu se întoarce pe Coperta 1 și în paginile revistei noastre cu un interviu fresh și cu multe idei interesante. Ai foarte mulți ani de când tu și Poker Stars formați o echipă. Ce valori comune vă leagă?

Ce m-a atras spre PokerStars de la bun început este faptul că are cel mai amplu, cel mai bun, cel mai inovator, cel mai de top sistem de suport pentru clienți și software. Cât despre valori, PokerStars și-a construit brandul ca un site care ține cont de feedback-ul primit de la jucători și organizează evenimente la nivel global, atât live, cât și online.

Care sunt cele mai mari satisfacții pe care ți le-a adus pokerul?

Pokerul mi-a adus libertate! Trăiesc visul vieții mele jucând poker. Nimic nu-mi poate aduce satisfacții mai mari!

Faima ta transcede dincolo de lumea pokerului. Sunteți o adevărat star, în adevăratul sens al cuvântului. Sunteți cu siguranță recunoscut și admirat de oameni care nu au defel nici o legătură cu pokerul. Cum faceți față celebrității? Care sunt plusurile și minusurile unei vieți de vedetă?

Am în jurul meu oameni cu care m-am împrietenit cu mult înainte de a deveni o ”vedetă” și am o viață personală destul de retrasă când sunt acasă, în Vegas. Faima nu-mi provoacă niciun fel de probleme, dar aș spune că atunci când ești tot timpul în lumina reflectoarelor, tot ce faci e urmărit mult mai atent. Oamenii te pot judeca mai aspru pentru o mică greșeală, în ciuda faptului că te cunosc doar atât cât te văd la TV.

Dacă ar fi să alegi altă țară, cu excepția SUA, ca și loc de reședință, care ar fi aceasta?

Asta e o întrebare simplă. M-am născut în Canada și iubesc orașul Toronto. Dacă ar trebui să mă mut, acolo ar fi cel mai simplu și mai logic să mă stabilesc.

Activitatea de jucător profesionist de poker poate fi stresantă. Sunt jucători de poker care au câștigat masiv din poker din diferite turnee, și acum sunt retrași. Ai fost un jucător de poker activ pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. Ai luat în considerare vreodată posibilitatea de a te retrage?

Partea frumoasă a jocului de poker este că, de fapt, nu trebuie să mă retrag niciodată. Îmi place să joc poker și nu cred că situația se va schimba în următorii 40 de ani. Doyle Brunson are 84 de ani și încă joacă în partidele cu cele mai mari mize cash din Vegas.

Dacă ai putea da timpul înapoi, ai mai începe să joci poker din nou sau ți-ai alege o altă slujbă? Și dacă ar fi să alegi un alt job, care ar fi acesta?

Cred că am procedat corect alegând să joc poker, deci ar fi un gest prostesc să aleg acum altceva. Dacă ar fi trebuit să-mi aleg un alt job, aș fi investit mai mult timp în scris scenarii și jucat în filme.

Care sunt cele mai mari regrete ale tale din poker?

Sincer, nu trăiesc cu regrete…Dar simt că rezultatele mele din World Series of Poker ar fi trebuit să fie mai bune decât au fost, de-a lungul carierei mele. Mi-ar fi plăcut să am deja 9 sau 10 Brățări WSOP până acum, dar am numai 6.

Ai putea să ne descrii cea mai interesantă mâna de poker pe care ai jucat-o vreodată? La ce turneu a avut loc și cu cine te-ai luptat pentru fisele de la masa de joc?

S-a întâmplat în 2003, la Showdown at the Sands. Era un eveniment televizat, unde am ajuns să joc heads-up cu Freddie Deeb. El a mizat pe river și eu am fost sigur că avea o mână bună, probabil cu o combinație AK pentru cea mai tare pereche. Știam că Freddie nu crede că merg la bluff, așa că am decis să plusez pe river, sperând că o să creadă că am o mână mai bună și o să arunce cărțile. Exact asta a făcut și mi-a arătat fix o combinație AK! Am decis că ar fi mai bine pentru mine să-i arăt că am mers la bluff și să schimb soarta jocului. Așa că am mers la bluff total, cu un A7. A funcționat – și în final am câștigat turneul!

Ai un idol în poker? Cine este această persoană?

Admir mulți jucători, dar n-aș spune că am neapărat un idol în poker.

Ce crezi că se întâmplă în acest moment cu pokerul în lume? Este pe un drum bun?

Cred că la ora actuală se întâmplă multe chestii grozave în poker și, în multe privințe, suntem pe drumul cel bun. S-a lansat Poker Central, o rețea de poker non-stop, care funcționează destul de bine. De asemenea, o altă apariție nouă este GPL (Global Poker League), de care lumea pare încântată.

Cu calitățile pe care le ai, dacă ar fi să alegi între a fi politician și a lucra în televiziune, ce ai alege?

Când ești politician, problema este că e foarte greu să fii onest – chestie care mă ține departe de politică. Dar îmi place să fac TV și film, așa că aș alege această opțiune.

 Care crezi că sunt principalele tendințe în poker la ora actuală?

Evenimentele high roller ar trebui să fie pe primul loc. Apar tot mai multe turnee cu buy-in-uri mari, care continuă să crească. E uimitor, fiindcă mulți n-ar fi crezut niciodată că evenimentele cu buy-in-uri de 100.000$ vor deveni ceva obișnuit.

 Ce crezi că se va întâmpla la nivel global: va crește fieldul de jucători și va scădea buy-in-ul sau va stagna (descrește) numărul de jucători și va crește buy-in-ul?

Cel mai important trend pe care l-am remarcat este că buy-in-urile mari au crescut și mai mult, în timp ce buy-in-urile de nivel scăzut continuă să atragă foarte mulți jucători. Ce pare să lipsească este o zonă de mijloc, să zicem evenimente cu buy-in-uri de 5.000-10.000$. Astfel de evenimente sunt inaccesibile pentru cei care aleg niveluri mai scăzute și nu suficient de atrăgătoare pentru marii jucători, care vin la evenimentele cu buy-in-uri de 100.000$.

Care sunt cele mai îndrăznețe ținte pe care ți le-ai propus pentru următorii 5 ani?

În fiecare an țin un blog pe www.fullcontactpoker.com unde fac o listă cu obiectivele pe care mi le-am propus pentru anul respectiv. Unele dintre ele sunt destul de ambițioase, dar așa îmi place să mi le aleg. Am niște idei legate de un nou show pe care vreau să-l creez, dar am și planuri dincolo de lumea pokerului, fiindcă îmi doresc să aduc hocheiul din NHL în Las Vegas.
