Between 2009 and 2016, he had won from online poker games played on the two famous poker websites, over 11 million dollars, turning him into the second most important winner in history, after Patrik Antonius.
Youth struggles and dropping out of college
By the age of 17, he had a boring childhood, filled with video games obsessions, particularly Command and Conquer, yet he started playing poker early and he was a constant loser. He actually had to get a job at McDonalds to recover financially. He studied economy at the University of Maryland before dropping out of college, to turn poker into a full time career.
Cates started playing online poker on small bets, like $0.25/$0.50 and specialized in heads-up. In two years, he managed to reach bets a hundred times higher.

Three events remain famous regarding this man. The first is that after 3 years of struggling to make a bankroll out of online poker, he meets Viktor Blom, and, in one heads-up session, he loses half a million dollars. It takes him about one year to make a comeback and in 2010 he earns 5 million dollars from online tournaments and 800,000 dollars more from the bet he made with Tom Dwan, this being the second famous event involving him.

Daniel Cates is an interesting player and has the potential to improve. He’s young, 27 years old, and has all the time in the world to confirm this.
