With the playing cards in my handCu cărțile de joc în mână
by Vlad Grigorescu
My name is Vlad Grigorescu, I am a magician, and this is the story about my journey with the playing cards in my hand.
I was 19 years old. I was obsessed with playing cards for several years now, and this interest was burning inside my since childhood. I was doing tricks. Good ones, too. Very good ones. Simple ones. Complicated ones. I was exasperating my friends with them whenever I had the chance. They liked it very much. I would manage to impress them with the cards in the absence of other advantages that other people perhaps had. I had already developed a high dexterity and I was always ready, with my deck of cards arranged in a special order. They all used to say that I was very good … but this one time things got more complicated.
I was at my first official performance. I was getting paid to provide entertainment for the customers of a certain bar in Bucharest. I was supposed to go to small or large groups of customers, and to entertain them with my ticks until their order arrived, and sometimes because the venue was crowded, the orders were pretty late. The venue was going very well and the owner, as I liked to think, was able to invest his money wisely.
The stake was altogether different now. There was no problem if something went wrong with my high school friends. Here, instead, besides risking to give cause for ridicule, I could also lower the value of the bar that had hired me.
With the deck of cards in my hand I approached the first group: „I am Vlad Grigorescu and I ask you to please choose a card!” All I had in mind to perform went well, but the reactions I was expecting from them had nothing to do with the facts. They didn’t dislike it, but it did not feel like a true show. They did not „feel the magic”.
Things went slightly better to the next group. To the next one was even better. I was hired to do that every night and I was getting better and better reactions. I was gaining experience fast; my charisma was beginning to take shape. I learned how to talk to them, I learned how to interact with them, how to give them hints and how to make them listen, I learned how to make them interested, how to make them appreciate what they just saw, how to surprise them, how to be always one step ahead of them, how to behave in unexpected situations, how to cope with different types of personalities, how to impress them, to cut a long story short, how to build a very good show.
I was now succeeding to get applauses even from groups of 2 or 3 people, and that in a location where applauses were not something natural. The groups I left with no applauses became more and more rare. But I wanted to do more, to be seen by more people.
I began to perform larger shows in Stand Up Comedy clubs or smaller university theatres. There I was, still with the deck of cards in my hand, but facing 50-100 people. It was something else. Now the spectators stood in the dark, away from me, and their attitude was different. It was more difficult to control them. The playing cards were doing their thing, the tricks were just as good, but I need to go to the next level.
I was performing on more and more shows and I become better and better. It didn’t take long before I began to manage a bigger audience. My charisma was adapting so that, with the deck of cards I was able to perform a memorable show for everyone. I started to go on tours throughout the country, to have the fans, to be sought and employed for all sorts of social and private events, corporate events or to take part in different campaigns.
I started to perform at prestigious theaters, great event halls and with a deck of cards I was now succeeding to make 1000 people stand up and applaud to the rhythm of the song that was played at the end of the show. With the same deck of cards.
Obviously, in this entire story, the playing cards are just a metaphor for all the different tricks, which are in some way similar for all magicians, regardless of the size, their props or the spectacular. Even if they are different, they are still tricks, still „a pack of cards”. The only things that matter are the person holding the deck of cards and the journey he took with it in his hand.
Looking back now, nearly 10 years later, my journey seems long to me and full of steps that made me a successful professional performer, but I know that my journey begins only now. I am Vlad Grigorescu and I ask you to please choose a card!
