“An image is worth a thousand words”, says a Chinese proverb. Some images – photographs, more precisely – are worth even more than that, as their value is expressed in millions of words and millions of dollars. According to an accounting inventory, the most expensive ten photos in the world are worth together more than $30 million, a fact that proves how well placed is photography among the seven arts and how its value can almost equal that of painting.
Casino Inside has made a selection of some of the most expensive photos in the world and presents here the most interesting aspects in regard to their shooting, and reveals their prices. Some of these photos convey tenderness; others inspire dear, repulsion, mystery, maybe even rage. None of them is just a simple image, having an evocative force which makes them stand among the impressive images that are destined to travel around the world, to tell stories, to become part of the history of the world. It is for these reasons that a gambler who fancies art cannot remain numb on front of these images and, moreover, can make sure that they get their well-deserved place among art collections.
”Billy the Kid” is the photograph that inspired interest among art lovers, even though its author remained anonymous. It is an old photo, made in 1880 and it displays an outlaw-dressed boy, holding a riffle close to his body. The look of this boy seems to hide a story that few are able to decipher. The cost of this photograph? No less than $2.3 million. Another photo that is equally expensive is „Untitled #153”, made by the american visua artist Cindy Sherman, who became the subject of her own photographs. This photo reveals the macabre side of the photographic art, displaying a female corpse, covered in dirt and mud – the photographer herself, who was saying that death is her biggest fear and she wants to overcame this fear through photography. This image is worth $2.7 million.
The photo entitled ”99 Cent II, Diptychon” was made in 2001 by the german photograph Andreas Gursky, one of the most renowned and expensive contemporary photographers, and it was sold with $3.3 million, a cost that can seem a bit steep for a photo that displays the interior of a supermarket, in which you can see tens of shelves and thousands of products, but also the number 99 behind then, an imprinted price that reigns above all those products.
Gamblers who have made a passion for art will surely be impressed by the famous photo made by Jeff Wall – „Dead Troops Talk”, which admitedly shows a Red Army patrol in Afghanistan, in the winter of 1986, being known as a documentary – photo. The frame was shot in a studio, in 1990, and many dead soldiers can be observed in it, which seem to be joking to one another and having conversations. This photo evokes, according to experts, the destructive energy and the futility of war, being sold for $3.7 million.
The second place on the podium is reserved for „Rhein II”, which was shot by Andreas Gursky, already mentioned in the same top with another photo. Sold for $4.3 million, this photograph can be considered the ideal illustration of simplicity in art – only the Rhein can be seen in it, the two shores and the sky. For those who claim that its price is not justifiable, let us recall the words of the famous painter Edward Hopper, who said that „If you can say it in words, there is no purpose in painting it”.
Finally, we end this top with a photo that is both famous and expensive, and on top of that controversial. We are talking about „Phantom”, taken by the Finnish photographer Peter Lik in 1999, in same year that Gursky took „Rhein II”. It is the most expensive photo in history, sold at an auction for the fabulous sum of $6.5 milllion. The photo was taken in the underground cavern of the Antelope canion in Arizona, and in it one can distringuish a human shape, while the sholw setting seems to portray a ghost. The shape appeared, nonetheless, thanks to some rays of light that have made way in the canion. „The purpose of all my photos is to capture the power of nature”, said the photographer.
Even if you don’t take our words for granted, dear gamblers, and you are not yet convinced to invest your gambling winning in a photo signed by a famous name in the industry, maybe you will be convinced by themselves. Unele imagini – fotografii, mai exact – valorează chiar mai mult de atât, valoarea lor fiind exprimată în milioane de cuvinte și milioane de dolari. Potrivit unui inventar pur contabilicesc, cele mai scumpe zece fotografii din lume valorează însumat peste 30 de milioane de dolari, fapt care arată că fotografia își merită locul în topul celor șapte arte și că valoarea acestei arte o poate egala pe cea a picturii.
Casino Inside a selectat câteva dintre cele mai scumpe fotografii din lume și vă prezintă cele mai interesante aspecte legate de realizarea lor, dar și prețurile acestora. Unele dintre aceste fotografii inspiră duioșie, altele teamă, repulsie, mister, poate chiar furie. Niciuna nu este însă o simplă imagine, ci au o forță evocatoare care le plasează într-un alt top: cel al imaginilor răvășitoare care merită să facă înconjurul lumii, care povestesc file de istorie, în fine, care trebuie să rămână în istorie. În fine, încheiem acest top cu o fotografie pe cât de celebră și costisitoare, pe atât de controversată. Chiar dacă nu v-am convins, dragi gambleri, să investiți câștigurile făcute în urma unui joc de succes într-o fotografie semnată de un nume celebru în breaslă, poate vă vor convinge chiar ei, fotografii, cu viitoare opere de artă care vă vor atrage privirile. Investiția în artă este, până la urmă, o investiție care poate fi recuperată oricând – de multe ori dublată, cvadruplată, înzecită.
