Legends need heroes. Horses, jockeys, trainers, owners compete, it is a contest. But where is the battle? How are called these places where all these egos clash? What is going on there? We’ll discuss these wonderful spaces created by human hands to satisfy a desire for superiority through others in our following episodes: the racecourse.

The Longchamp Racecourse, France

Introduction

The Longchamp Racecourse, with its official name being the Hippodrome de Longchamp, is one of the most most prestigious horse racing venues throughout the whole of France and the world. Longchamp specializes in flat racing for thoroughbred racehorses. The racecourse holds around 30 race meetings annually. The racecourse runs 15 or more Group 1 Races each year. It’s most famous as the venue for the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, held in early October each year. However, Longchamp also hosts the French 2,000 guineas and 1,000 guineas – called the „Poule d’Essai des Poulains” and „Poule d’Essai des Pouliches”, respectively – and the Grand Prix de Paris. The Arc is held as a 2 day event on the first weekend in October of each year.

History

Horse racing was originally held at the Champ de Mars from 1833. In 1857 the new racecourse in the Bois de Boulogne area of Paris just a few minutes from the Eiffel Tower was opened and named the Longchamp racecourse. On the last Sunday in April 1857 the first ever race was held at Longchamp. Royalty were among the attendees, including Prince Jerome Bonaparte and his son Prince Napoleon.

About The Longchamp Racecourse

The Longchamp Racecourse is set in 57 hectares of beautiful Paris land between the Seine and the Bois de Boulogne. There are 4 courses, 1 big track, one medium, one small and a 1000-metre straight track. The Racetrack itself is 2,750 metres. There are 46 different starting points from 1,000 – 4,000 metres. The unique shape of the track includes a famous rise, majestic descending turn and faux home straight. This makes the racecourse extremely challenging to navigate for the jockeys, offering an advantage to those familiar with the course.

The Longchamp racecourse venue spans over 55 hectares and is a favourite for many Parisians when it comes to a day out of leisure and relaxation. Because the track is so internationally well known, it is also visited by many tourists and there can be as many as forty percent of people visiting this famous racecourse from other countries, especially for special events like the prestigious Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Dress Code and Fashion

As in previous editions, a dazzling array of elegant ladies and dandies flocked to Longchamp to watch the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Since 1920, this world-renowned Grand Prix has been the epitome of elegance and beauty: this year, the “Beaux Duos” Elegance Award gave an extra incentive for racegoers to let their creative juices run free! With extravagant headgear, silken fabrics and the delicate curve of a high heel, foreign fashions blended with French chic, bringing elegance to centre stage at Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe!

Presided by journalist Alexandra Golovanoff, an avid fashion and style guru, the Elegance Award had a large number of highly innovative participants. Stunning couples parade around the dedicated area throughout the day, under the watchful eye of the photographers and jury, who had the difficult task of selecting the winners. In the end, a splendid couple who showed true elegance and refinement won the two Citroën DS3 cars as first prize; the runners-up went home with tickets for a fantastic holiday in Qatar (second prize) and two stunning Longines watches (third prize)!
