We’ll discuss these wonderful spaces created by human hands to satisfy a desire for superiority through others in our following episodes: the racecourse.
Ellerslie Racecourse, New Zeeland
Introduction
The racing of Thoroughbred horses is a popular sport in New Zealand. The governing body is New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Incorporated. The principal club is the Auckland Racing Club, which races at Ellerslie Racecourse.
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Ellerslie, Auckland, New Zealand for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit of approximately 1,900 m.
History
The first race meeting was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage. Many took the trains, though with the demand created by the event, as late as in 1910 they often had to travel in open cattle trucks because there were not enough normal coaches available for the demand of the extra services.
Ellerslie Racecourse was the location of the first automatic totalisator, designed by George Julius and installed in 1913. An automatic totalisator is a device to add up the bets in a pari-mutuel betting system. The whole of the pot (the stakes on all competitors) is divided pro rata to the stakes placed on the winning competitor and those tickets are paid out. Essentially it implements a system of starting price (SP) betting. George Julius is English-born, New Zealand educated, Australian inventor, engineer and businessman, a leader of Australian engineering in the first half of the twentieth century.
Champion racehorses to have raced at Ellerslie include Kindergarten, Balmerino, Bonecrusher, Uncle Remus, Japan Cup winner Horlicks, Il Tempo, Mr Tiz, Sunline (who was buried at the racecourse in 2009) and Jimmy Choux.
Ellerslie is home to two of New Zealand’s major racing carnivals – the Summer Carnival and Auckland Cup Week. The Summer Carnival is run in the Christmas-New Year period with Boxing Day and New Year’s Day formerly being home to the New Zealand Derby and Auckland Cup respectively, but these were moved to the new Auckland Cup Week in March 2006.
About Auckland Racing Club
The Auckland Racing Club, as we know it today, came into existence on January 9, 1874, when members of two existing clubs – the Auckland Jockey Club and Auckland Turf Club, amalgamated. Racing in Auckland had begun some 32 years beforehand on Epsom Racecourse, or „Epsom Downs” as it was known, which was on a site about three miles from the city. The first meeting on this site took place on January 5, 1842, and the card consisted of two events – the Auckland Town Plate and Valparaiso Stakes Handicap.
After these modest beginnings, racing became an annual event and by 1849, racing was well established. The Auckland Jockey Club was formed in 1853 and ten years later, the committee of the club adopted a comprehensive set of rules and regulations governing racing.
In 1893, the Auckland Turf Club was introduced as a rival to the Jockey Club. However, the Turf Club raced on just two occasions, December 26 and 27 of that year, before joining with the Jockey Club to form the inaugural Auckland Racing Club. The first two days, racing under the auspices of the ARC were held on May 25 and 26 1874 at Ellerslie where horses had raced since 1857. May 25 was observed as a public holiday to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday.
From these modest beginnings developed one of the finest racecourses in the world – a serious rival for the best that Great Britain, Ireland, France, America, South Africa and Australia could produce. As with all great courses, racing at Ellerslie is of a consistently high standard and any number of great gallopers have graced the Ellerslie turf since racing’s inception there all those years ago.

Ellerslie Race course is the home of the Auckland Racing Club and the Pakuranga Hunt Club. Gifted to the Club in the 1930s by Moss Davis (an Auckland Racing Club member), this priceless silver trophy reflects the heritage and prestige of the great race. Keep an eye out for this magnificent piece of silverware taking pride of place on the dais in the Birdcage. Other feature races on the day include the Group lll McKee Family Sunline Vase and the Group lll Westbury Classic.
Diamond Day provides the perfect opportunity for attendees to celebrate the finale of a fantastic week! The day’s feature races are the Group I Haunui Farm Diamond Stakes (for the country’s best two-year-old horses) and the Group I New Zealand Stakes as well as the Group lll Mr Tiz Trophy.
Prix de Fashion. Prix de Fashion is New Zealand’s premiere racing fashion event. The culmination of Fashion in the Field competitions held at thoroughbred racing clubs across the country, Prix de Fashion brings together the best of the best to find the person to represent New Zealand at the 2015 Myer Fashions on the Field as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. In 2015, Prix de Fashion will take place in a beautiful marquee on the entrance way to the racecourse
Picnics and Ponies. Picnics, BBQs with family and friends, music and the sound of horses galloping by are a few of the great family memories created from a day at the races. Picnics & Ponies is back in 2014 and is a great family area featuring free children’s entertainment including pony rides, bouncy castles, swingball and more! – Ellerslie’s big BBQ will be available and there’s space to bring your own picnic (no BYO alcohol). Punter of the Year. The Ellerslie Punter of the Year competition promises to be a very spirited battle between some of the country’s leading punters. There is a maximum of two people per team and with a first prize of $10,000 cash and a highest turnover prize of $1,000; it will be a hotly-contested competition! Registration opens in early 2015.

Dress Code and Fashion
A day at the Ellerslie races offers the perfect excuse to get dressed up for the occasion. There is always a fantastic array of stunning racewear on display – from colourful summer dresses and stylish headwear for the girls to smart suits and clever shirt and tie combinations for the guys.
Thoroughbred racing has a long history of people dressing for the races and race wear has a unique place in fashion – a modern interpretation of garden party style, ladylike chic and daytime glamour. While trends may influence, sophistication and elegance matter most – as well as the perfect headpiece, total co-ordination and attention to detail. Dress codes apply to certain areas on course so ensure you have an understanding of what you should plan to wear for each area on course:
Ascot (Members) Stand & ALL hospitality areas
Smart Casual – No shorts, jeans (on Level 2 of the Ascot Stand), singlets, jandals or collarless shirts will be accepted. Most people will be in raceday attire, ie suits and dresses, and a high standard of dress is encouraged in these areas.
Ellerslie (Public) Stand & public lawn areas
Tidy casual dress is expected.

How to enter: Racegoers oncourse just need to be spotted and impress the judges with their raceday style.

How to Get To Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is easily accessible by car, bus or train.
By car: If travelling from the south or north it is best to use the Greenlane exit. From the south once you exit the motorway turn right at the Greenlane Roundabout and take your third exit onto Greenlane East (towards Remuera). From the north once you exit the motorway turn left at the Greenlane Roundabout and take your first exit onto Greenlane East (towards Remuera).
By train: If you are coming by train alight at Greenlane Station. When you exit the station turn right and follow the path and signage.
By taxi: Auckland Co-Op taxi is their preferred taxi partner. On racedays taxi’s drop off and pick up outside the main turnstile gates.Legendele au nevoie de eroi. Cum ajungem la Hipodromul Ellerslie
La Ellerslie Racecourse este uşor de ajuns cu maşina, autobuzul sau trenul.
Cu mașina: Dacă călătoriți din sud sau din nord cel mai bine este să folosiți ieşirea Greenlane. De la sud, odată ce ați ieşit de pe autostradă, virați la dreapta la Greenlane Roundabout şi alegeți a treia ieșire pe Greenlane (spre Remuera). Din nord, odată ce ieșiți de pe autostradă, viraţi la stânga la sensul giratoriu Greenlane şi luați prima ieşire pe Greenlane (spre Remuera).
Cu trenul: Dacă veniţi cu trenul coborâți la stația Greenlane. Când ieşiţi din stație faceți dreapta şi urmaţi drumul şi indicatoarele.
Cu taxiul: Auckland Co-Op taxi este partenerul de taxi preferat al circuitului de curse. În zilele de curse taxiurile aduc şi iau oameni din fața porţilor principale.
