Legends need heroes. Horses, jockeys, trainers, owners compete, it is a contest. But where is the battle? How are called these places where all these egos clash? What is going on there? We’ll discuss these wonderful spaces created by human hands to satisfy a desire for superiority through others in our following episodes: the racecourse. 

ROYAL ASCOT

History

Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. The first race, „Her Majesty’s Plate”, with a purse of 100 guineas, was held on 11 August 1711. Seven horses competed, each carrying a weight of 12 stones (76 kg). This first race comprised three separate four-mile (6437 m) heats. In 1813 Parliament passed an act to ensure that the grounds would remain a public racecourse. A new grandstand was opened in 1839 at a cost of £10000.

In 1913 Parliament passed an act (Ascot Authority Act 1913 c.lxxxiv) creating the Ascot Authority, an entity that manages the racecourse to this day. From its creation until 1945 the only racing that took place at Ascot was the Royal Meeting, a four-day event. Since that date, more fixtures have been introduced to the grounds, notably the Steeplechase and hurdles in 1965. Ascot racecourse closed for a period of twenty months on 26 September 2004, for a £185 million redevelopment funded by Allied Irish Bank and designed by Populous and Buro Happold. As owner of the Ascot estate, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth reopened the racecourse on Tuesday 20 June 2006.

Upon re-opening the new grandstand attracted criticism for failing to provide sufficiently raised viewing for patrons to watch the racing, and devoting too much space to restaurants, bars and corporate hospitality facilities.At the end of 2006 a £10 million programme of further alterations was announced to improve the viewing from lower levels of the grandstand using an innovative steel composite product („SPS” sandwich plate system) to reprofile the existing concrete terraces. However, the upper levels provide far less accommodation for the everyday racegoer than was present in the former stand.

Every year Royal Ascot is attended by HM Elizabeth II and various members of the British Royal Family such as The Prince of Wales, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage with the Royal procession taking place at the start of each race day and the raising of the Queen’s Royal Standard. It is a major event in the British social calendar, and press coverage of the attendees and what they are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing.

Present Day

Ascot Racecourse is ideally situated in beautiful wooded countryside adjoining Windsor Great Park, offering easy access for all racegoers, wherever their departure point. The Royal Enclosure is the most prestigious of the three enclosures, with recent visits from the Queen and Royal Family members. Access to the Royal Enclosure is restricted, with high security on the day. First-time applicants must apply to the Royal Enclosure Office and gain membership from someone who has attended the enclosure for at least four years. For existing badgeholders, an invitation is sent out by Her Majesty’s Representative to request badges. The badgeholder’s name is written onto the badge and can be used only by that person; the colours of the badges vary each day for one-day applicants. Those in the Royal Enclosure have the options of fine dining and hospitality, and a selection of bars. The dress code is strictly enforced. For women, only a day dress with a hat is acceptable, with rules applying to the length and style of the dress. In addition, women must not show bare midriffs or shoulders. For men, black or grey morning dress with top hat is required.

Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe’s best-attended race meeting. There are sixteen group races on offer, with at least one Group One event on each of the five days. The Gold Cup is on Ladies’ Day on the Thursday.

Royal Ascot for the first time in 2013 will feature prize-money of £5,000,000. A total increase in the prize-money purse of £500,000 for the meeting representing an 11% increase from 2012. Total prize money at Ascot throughout the 2013 season will be just above £10,000,000. This amount excludes the £3.4M on offer during the Qipco British Champions Day, an industry joint venture.

Prize money for The St James’s Palace Stakes and Coronation Stakes has been increased by £100,000 to £350,000, which puts each race on equal footing with the Queen Anne Stakes, King’s Stand Stakes and Gold Cup. The Windsor Forest Stakes has been renamed, with the Queen’s consent, The Duke of Cambridge Stakes, recognising the new title given to Prince William, and has seen a 25% increase in its value to £125,000.

Where to watch the horses

Here are some tips on where the horses will be throughout the day and the best places to watch them.

The pre-parade ring

Watch from around the Pre-Parade Ring as the horses are saddled up and led around by their lad or lass before each race. This process begins 25 minutes before off time, and is a good opportunity to see the muscle definition and power behind these magnificent animals.

The parade ring

Horses enter the Parade Ring approximately 15 minutes before their race. Listen out for the bell, which signifies that all the jockeys have been weighed out and are about to mount their horses and ride out to the track.

The horse walk

Stand by the Horsewalk which connects the Pre-Parade Ring, Parade Ring and track, when the horses come out through the tunnel. Both Premier and Grandstand Admission racegoers can stand beside the tunnel exit to the track, which is located to the left of the Core 1 steps at Lawn Level.

The track

Experience the atmosphere as the horses thunder past the post. Watching a race from the rails gets you as close as possible to the horses as they race past. The area of lawn you can enjoy the race from will depend on the raceday and the type of ticket you have.

The unsaddling enclosure

If a horse has not won or placed, it will not return to the Winners’ Enclosure but will stop at the Unsaddling Enclosure.Here, the jockey will remove their saddle and return to the Weighing Room while the horse will be taken back to the stables. This area is great in the winter, as you see the steam rising off the horses as they return from the track.

The winners enclosure

Enjoy the winners coming back to a rapturous applause and the trophy presentations after the race.

The Winners’ Enclosure is located inside the Parade Ring and this is where the winning and placed horses are reunited with their owners. Trophies are presented by the sponsor or VIP guests to the winning owner and, for the bigger races, the trainer and jockey.

Situated at the western end of the Concourse, this restaurant is just minutes from the Pre-Parade Ring and track.

Boxes & Private Area Hire

With breathtaking views across the racecourse, a Private Box is the perfect way to enjoy an unparalleled Ascot experience. This intimate environment offers a unique and memorable way to entertain guests from the very heart of the action. Ascot has 229 Private Boxes, each consisting of a private bar and dining room with a large flat screen television, bespoke catering options, and a balcony that offers a prime view of the racing. Loges are private race viewing areas situated in the external area of the Grandstand on Concourse Level. Sheltered by the Grandstand’s roof and protected from the elements, each loge provides seating for 15 people and offers excellent views of the racecourse. In addition, there is the Concourse Suite on the Concourse Level of the Grandstand, directly opposite the Winning Post, with a private loge for undercover external viewing.

In the modern era, the colorful blend of Dukes, counts and Sirs was enriched with people with no trace of blue blood in their veins. The love for horses and racing is what keeps them together. And to me it seems enough.

ROYAL ASCOT

Istorie

Hipodromul Ascot a fost fondat în 1711 de Regina Anne. Prima cursă „Her Majesty’s Plate”, cu un premiu de 100 de Guinee, a avut loc pe 11 August 1711. Au concurat șapte cai, fiecare transportând o greutate de 76 kg. Această primă cursă a cuprins trei serii separate de patru mile (6437 m) fiecare. În 1813, Parlamentul a adoptat un act pentru a se asigura că terenul respectiv va rămâne un hipodrom public.  În 1839 a fost deschisă o nouă tribună oficială care a costat 10.000£.

În 1913, Parlamentul a adoptat un act (Ascot Authority Act 1913 c.lxxxiv) creând Ascot Authority (Autoritatea Ascot), o entitate care gestionează hipodromul și astăzi. De la crearea sa și până în 1945, toate cursele ce au avut loc la Ascot au fost de tipul Royal Meeting, un eveniment de patru zile. Începând cu această dată, au fost introduse mai multe tipuri de curse, în special sărituri peste garduri şi obstacole, în 1965. Redeschiderea noii tribune oficiale a atras critici pentru incapacitatea acesteia de a oferi o vizibilitate suficient de ridicată pentru ca proprietarii să poată urmării cursele, şi pentru că dedică prea mult spaţiu pentru restaurante, baruri şi facilităţi de ospitalitate corporatistă. La sfârşitul anului 2006, a fost anunţat un alt program de lucrări în valoare de 10 milioane de lire sterline, care să aducă alte modificări de îmbunătăţire a vizualizării de la nivelurile inferioare ale tribunei oficiale, folosind un produs inovativ de compozit din oţel care a reprofilat terasele din beton existente. Totuși, nivelurile superioare oferă mult mai puţine locuri pentru vizitatorii de zi cu zi ai curselor decât existau în fosta tribună.

În fiecare an, Royal Ascot este frecventată de Majestatea Sa Elisabea a II-a și diferiți membri ai familiei regale britanice, precum Prințul de Wales, care sosesc zilnic la eveniment într-o trăsură trasă de cai, iar procesiunile regale au loc la începutul fiecărei zi de curse şi la Queen’s Royal Standard. În Prezent

Hipodromul Ascot este așezat ideal în frumoasa zonă rurală împădurită care se învecinează cu Windsor Great Park, oferind acces ușor tuturor fanilor curselor, indiferent de punctul de plecare. Incinta Regală este cea mai prestigioasă dintre cele trei existente, cu vizite recente ale membrilor Familiei Regale și a Reginei. Accesul în Incinta Regală este limitat prin securitatea de grad înalt. Cei care solicită acces pentru prima dată, trebuie să comunice acest lucru la biroul Incintei Regale, pentru a obţine statutul de membru de la cineva care are acces în incintă de cel puțin patru ani. Pentru cei cu insigne, reprezentantul Majestății Sale va trimite o invitaţie de solicitare a insignei. Numele celui care deține insigna este înscris pe aceasta, ea putând fi utilizată numai de către acea persoană; pentru solicitanţii de o zi, culorile insignelor variază zilnic. Cei aflați în Incinta Regală beneficiază de opțiuni de mese excelente, ospitalitate şi o selecţie de băuturi. Codul vestimentar este aplicat cu stricteţe. Pentru femei, se acceptă doar rochie de zi cu pălărie, cu reguli privind lungimea şi stilul rochiei. În plus, femeile nu trebuie să aibă abdomenul sau umeri la vedere (goi). Pentru bărbaţi, se acceptă îmbrăcăminte neagră sau gri pentru dimineaţă, cu pălărie.

Peste 300.000 de oameni fac vizita anuală la Berkshire în timpul săptămânii Royal Ascot, acest lucru face ca aceasta să fie întâlnirea cu cea mai mare participare din Europa. Există şaisprezece grupuri de curse pe ofertă, cu cel puţin un eveniment de Grupa I în fiecare dintre cele cinci zile. Golden Cup este în Ziua Doamnelor, joia.

Royal Ascot a avut pentru prima dată premiu bani în valoare de 5.000.000£ în anul 2013. O creştere totală a premiului în bani de 500.000£ pentru reuniune reprezentând o creştere de 11% față de 2012. Premiile totale în bani la Ascot pe parcursul sezonului 2013 vor fi cu puțin peste 10.000.000£. Această sumă exclude cele 3,4 £ milioane oferite în timpul zilei Qipco British Champions Day.

Premiile în bani pentru St James’s Palace Stales şi Coronation Stakes au crescut cu 100.000£ până la 350.000£, lucru care pune fiecare cursă pe picior de egalitate cu Queen Anne Stakes, King’s Stand Stakes și Gold Cup. Evenimentul Windsor Forest Stakes a fost redenumit cu acordul reginei, The Duke of Cambridge Stakes, recunoscând noul titlu dat Prințului William, şi valoarea evenimentului a fost crescută cu 25%, la 125.000£.

Unde puteți privi caii

Iată câteva indicii despre unde se vor afla caii în timpul zilei și care sunt cele mai bune locuri din care îi puteți privi.

Cercul Pre-paradă

Din jurul zonei de dinainte de paradă puteți privi cum se pune șaua pe cai și cum aceștia sunt conduși în jurul cercului cu hamul înainte de fiecare cursă. Acest proces începe cu 25 de minute înainte de pauză, și este o ocazie bună de a vedea definirea mușchilor și puterea acestor animale magnifice.

Cercul de Paradă

Caii intră în zona Cercului de Paradă cu aproximativ 15 minute înainte de cursa lor. Fiți atenți să auziți clopotul, care semnifică faptul că toți jocheii au fost cântăriți și că aceștia urmează să încalece pe cai și să se îndrepte spre pista de curse.  

Zona de Deplasare a Cailor

Mergeți în zona de Deplasare a Cailor care leagă zonele Pre-Paradă, Cercul de Paradă și pistă, atunci când caii ies prin tunel. Atât vizitatorii premium cât și cei din Tribuna Oficială pot sta la ieșirea din tunel către pistă, aflată în stânga nivelului Lawn Level, zona Core 1.

Pista

Experimentați atmosfera ce se crează atunci când tropotul cailor trece de post. Vizionarea  unei curse de pe bară vă aduce cel mai aproape de cai pe măsură ce aceștia trec. În zona de gazon, vă puteţi bucura de cursă în funcție de ce tip de zi de curse este şi de tipul de bilet pe care îl aveţi.

Incinta de Deșeuare

Dacă un cal nu a câştigat sau nu s-a clasat, acesta nu va reveni la Incinta Câştigătorilor, ci se va opri la incinta de Deșeuare. Aici, jocheul îi va scoate şaua şi apoi se va întoarce în camera de cântărire, în timp ce calul va fi dus înapoi la grajduri. Aceasta zonă este grozavă în perioada de iarnă, deoarece puteți vedea cum se ridică aburul de pe cai când aceștia se întorc de pe pistă.

Incinta câștigătorilor

Bucuraţi-vă de gloria de aplauze cu care se întorc câştigătorii şi înmânarea trofeelor de după curse.

Incinta Câştigătorilor se află în interiorul cercului de paradă şi aici sunt reuniți caii câştigători şi clasați, cu proprietarii lor. Trofeele sunt înmânate de către sponsor sau de oaspeţi VIP proprietarului câştigător şi în cazul curselor cele mai mari, antrenorului şi jocheului.

Mâncarea și Băuturile la Ascot

Ascot oferă vizitatorilor curselor o varietate de experienţe culinare, de la prânzuri rafinate ca la carte la opţiuni mai relaxate de servire a mesei, auto-servire, picnicuri şi ceaiuri tradiţionale de după-amiază. Toate preparatele culinare delicioase sunt pregătite de talentata echipă de bucătari a Hipodromului. Bazate pe mâncăruri tradiţionale englezești, toate ingredientele utilizate reprezintă produsele cele mai bune ale sezonului, şi sunt de proveniență locală, acolo unde este posibil.

Bijuteria coroanei din punct de vedere culinar la Ascot, Restaurantul Parade Ring are vedere asupra Cercului de Paradă. În zilele premium, acest restaurant poate fi separat pentru ca Majestatea Sa Regina să vizioneze Cercul de Paradă de la balcon. Oferind un peisaj cu vederi fabuloase asupra vechiului padoc, Restaurantul Grill Ascot este locul perfect pentru a savura un prânz delicios. Situat la capătul vestic al zonei Concourse, acest restaurant este la doar câteva minute de Cercul de Pre-paradă şi de pistă.

Loje și Zone Private de Închiriat

Cu vederi răpitor de frumoase asupra hipodromului, o Lojă Privată este modul perfect de a te bucura de o experienţă de neegalat la Ascot. Acest mediu intim oferă un mod unic şi memorabil de întreținere a oaspeţilor, exact în centrul acţiunii. Ascot are 229 de Loje Private, fiecare constând dintr-un bar privat şi o sufragerie cu un televizor mare cu ecran plat, opţiuni de catering personalizat şi un balcon, care oferă o vedere excelentă asupra curselor. Facilităţile de pariere sunt uşor de accesat, de pe fiecare nivel.

Lojele sunt zone de vizionare privată a curselor situate în zona externă a nivelului Grandstand on Concourse Level. Adăpostite de acoperişul Grandstand şi protejate de corpuri, fiecare lojă oferă relaxare pentru 15 persoane şi o vedere excelentă asupra hipodromului. În plus, există și Concourse Suite la nivelul Concourse – Grandstand, care se află exact vizavi de Postul Câştigătorilor, cu o lojă privată pentru vizualizare externă, secretă.

Ascot are câte ceva pentru toată lumea și 26 de zile de curse pe an de care vă puteți bucura. Pe lângă Royal Ascot, mai sunt și alte zile de curse care oferă facilități culinare,, festivaluri de vin şi bere, concerte live, cocktail-uri, teme cu anii 1950, distracţie pentru familii, şi multe altele.

Acest loc încărcat de istorie și de tradiție pur britanică este piatra de temelie a nașterii și dezvoltării de secole a curselor de cai pe întreg mapamondul. Totul a început aici ca o formă de distracție și petrecere a timpului liber pentru monarhi și nobilimea lor. Acum, păstrându-și sobrietatea și opulența, Royal Ascot rămâne să ducă tradiția curselor de cai britanice pe mai departe îmbogățindu-și aura și atrăgând și pe alții în mrejele sale. În epoca modernă amestecul pestriț dintre duci, conți și Sirs s-a îmbogățit cu oameni fără pic de sânge albastru în vene. Doar dragostea pentru cai și curse îi țin laolaltă. Iar asta mi se pare suficient.
