Their world is unique, special and driven by pride and passion. The vast majority of the world’s horse races are won by the horses of those people presented below. Their personalities influenced the major horse races in their countries and in the world, and the money invested by them, made you a contemporary of the legends that have grown for years surrounding horse, jockeys, or coaches. To them, the owners, we also owe an equal share, as to the others, the privilege of watching a race.
Team Valor International
Team Valor is an american and international thoroughbred horse racing stable headquartered in Versailles, Kentucky. Barry Irwin and Jeff Siegel, great friends since meeting in the press box in 1970, in the ensuing years owned horses together and shared a mutual interest in scouting for runners with a future.
In the winter of 1987 Irwin and Siegel became the prime founders of Clover Racing Stables. Luck was with the venture from the beginning, as the first horse to wear the black silks with green clovers was Political Ambition. Before that first racing season was in the books, Irwin and Siegel became the majority stockholders in Clover, Political Ambition became a Grade 1 winner in the Hollywood Derby. As of July 1, 2007, Barry Irwin bought out his longtime friend and business partner Jeff Siegel and renamed the stable Team Valor International, to reflect a change in the company’s business plan that had taken effect in the years immediately preceding the buy out.
Built on a business model that encourages the formation of partnerships or syndicates with horseracing enthusiasts, Team Valor International has partnerships with people in most US states as well as Japan, Singapore, Canada, South Africa, Italy and England.
Team Valor forms partnerships with racing enthusiasts and members of the industry to run Thoroughbreds at the major racing venues of the United States and abroad. Team Valor not only is the most successful stable of partnership-owned racehorses, it is one of the most accomplished racing stables among all types of owners. For the last several years, Team Valor has been listed among the world’s 100 leading stables by the English publication Directory of the Turf.
As such, over half of Team Valor’s stable is currently prospected outside of the United Stakes. In addition, the percentage of Team Valor’s thoroughbreds that are stake horses comprise over 50 percent, and have done so for over two decades. Team Valor has reported that over 28 percent of all of its runners have proved victorious in stakes races.
An interesting fact is that one percent of all the purse money earned by Team Valor horses goes towards the Race for Education to provide much-needed scholarships. Barry Irwin’s favorite horse, Swaps, was immortalized in 2002 in an Eclipse Press publication as part of its series focused on legendary racehorses.

Aga Khan
Shah Karim al-Hussayni, His Highness The Aga Khan IV, was born on 1936, and has become one of the most prolific racehorse owner and breeder in the world. One of the Aga Khan’s main sources of income is his horseracing interests.
At his self-titled estate Aiglemont, in the town of Gouvieux in the Picardy region of France – about 4 kilometres west of the Chantilly Racecourse – the Aga Khan operates the largest horse racing and breeding operation in the country.
The Aga Khan is said to be the France’s most influential owner-breeder and record winner of The Prix de Diane, sometimes referred to as the French Oaks. The Aga Khan owns Gilltown Stud near Kilcullen, Ireland, and the Haras de Bonneval breeding farm at Le Mesnil-Mauger in France. The Aga Khan Studs in France now cover over 600 hectares of finest Normandy pasture, approximately 130 of which belong to the Haras de Bonneval, where the stallion station is located and non Aga Khan mares are boarded.
Forbes describes the Aga Khan as one of the world’s ten richest royals with an estimated net worth of $800 million USD (2010). Additionally he is unique among the richest royals as he does not preside over a geographic territory.He owns hundreds of racehorses, valuable stud farms, an exclusive yacht club on Sardinia,a private island in the Bahamas, two Bombardier jets, a £100 million high speed yacht and several estates around the world.
In March 2005, he purchased the famous Calvados stud farms, the Haras d’Ouilly in Pont-d’Ouilly and the Haras de Val-Henry in Livarot. Haras d’Ouilly had been owned by such famous horsemen as the Duc Decazes, François Dupré and Jean-Luc Lagardère. He is passionate about horse racing and his investments in the sport have been large and highly publicized. In 1977 for instance, the Aga Kahn paid 1.3 million pounds for the bloodstock owned by Anna Dupre. A year later he paid 4.7 million pounds for the late Marcel Boussac’s bloodstock.
In 2006 the Aga Khan became the majority shareholder of the well known and highly respected French horse auction house, Arqana. On October 27, 2009 it was announced that Sea The Stars, regarded by many as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, would stand stud at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland.

Kenny Troutt
Troutt is a native of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, is a graduate of Southern Illinois University and owner of WinStar Farm. He has been a horseman for over 20 years and an entrepreneur most of his life. He established his first horse farm, Landview, in Eastern Nebraska in the early 1980’s. In 1988, he founded Excel Communications, a long distance telephone service company which integrated the growing demand for telecommunications service with the unprecedented power of relationship marketing. As Founder and Chairman of Excel, his innovative business and marketing strategies resulted in the meteoric rise of the corporation and its subsequent success as a publicly traded enterprise in 1996.
In 2000, Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner, both with long-standing interests in horses came together to purchase Prestonwood, adding to its area, and renaming it WinStar Farm. Included in the purchase were the stallions Kris S. and Distorted Humor. Kris S. died in 2002 at the age of 25 after siring five Breeder’s Cup winners and three Eclipse Award winners whose combined career earnings were in excess of $50,000,000. He is buried at WinStar, just outside the entrance to the stallion barn. Kenny Troutt is currently the sole owner of Winstar.
Today WinStar Farm is comprised of approximately 1,864 acres, including the original 450-acre tract of land, once known as Silver Pond Farm. Settled in the 1700’s by the Williams of Tidewater Virginia, the Silver Pond property remained in the family for over 150 years. Today the original farmhouse, smokehouse, pond, bank barn and Osage orange allee on Pisgah Pike are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the acreage includes land from the Olsen, Johnson and Kinkead farms.
Distorted Humor stands across the aisle in the WinStar stallion barn from the 2000 Horse of the Year, the 2005 leading freshman sire and the two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner (2000 and 2001), Tiznow. Next to Tiznow is the winner of the 2004 Breeder’s Cup Sprint, Speightstown. Down the row is the 1998 Belmont Stakes winner and the 1999 U.S. Champion Older Male Horse, Victory Gallop. Joining them in 2006 was the homebred Bluegrass Cat, winner of the Remsen Stakes as a two-year-old and the Haskell Invitational Handicap at three. In 2007, Distorted Humor’s son, Sharp Humor came to stand at WinStar. Five of Distorted Humor’s sons: Flower Alley, Da Stoops, It’s No Joke, Comedy Show and Sharp Humor will stand their first year for the 2007 breeding season. Well Armed, a WinStar Farm owned horse, won the 2009 Dubai World Cup by a record 14 lengths.
Troutt currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association as well as on the Board of Directors for the Breeders’ Cup. His colt Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby and his stallion Drosselmeyer nabbed the Belmont Stakes in 2010.
He resides in Dallas, Texas, with his wife Lisa and their three children.
