History

In For your eyes only (1981), Bond meets with Kristatos at the Casino Corfu. After a game of Chemin de fer (Baccarat) where Bond naturally wins, he and Kristatos have dinner at the casino restaurant. Theses scenes were filmed at what was then the real Casino Corfu, housed in the Achilleion Palace in Gastouri.

The Achiellon Palace was built in 1890 by the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria, the legendary princess Sissy. It was originally built as a summer recidence, designed with the hero Achilles as its central theme. Several statues of Achilles can be found in the palace garden. Elisabeth visited the palace until her passing in Geneva 1898. After her death, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II purchased Achilleon in 1907 and used it as a summer residence. During this time a lot of diplomatic activity took place in Achilleon and it became a hub of European diplomacy.

The restaurant scene was filmed at the back of the Palace. The locations has not changed much and you can still recognize the black and white tiles covering the entire backside. The small statues filmed in the foreground are still here.

Kaiser Wilhelm visited the palace until 1914 and the beginning of World War I. During the war the palace was used as a military hospital and after the war it became the propery of the Greek state according to the treaty of Versailles. It was then used to house various government services and during World War II the axis powers used the palace as military headquarters.

Casino Corfu is the first after-war casino to ever operate on Greek soil. It opened for the first time back in 1962 at the historic building of Achilleon, on lease in a twenty year contract with a German company. The company took on the rebuilding and restoration of Achilleon and collected a lot of the lost and sold items and works of art that decorated the palace. The lease was teminated in 1983 and the property was returned to the Hellenic tourist organisation.

It was decided in 1988 from E.O.T. (Hellenic Tourist Properties S.A.) that the casino would be moved to the Corfu Holiday Palace hotel. The reason behind this decision was to attract higher level players. In 1991 the casino functioned both at the palace of Achilleon and the Corfu Holiday Palace hotel after the intervention from the residence of Gastrouri, while a year later it continued to operate exclusively at the hotel grounds. In the year 2000 the administration and the Casino Corfu’s property items went to the Greek Tourism Development Co.

Operation Information

The Casino Corfu operates at the Corfu Holiday Palace, at specially decorated areas that span 900 square meters in diameter, 620 square meters of it comprising the many games for its customers, and 280 square meters are used exclusively for the players parking spaces.

Cazinoul este deschis zilnic pe tot parcursul anului şi oferă vizitatorilor săi jocuri tradiţionale de cazino şi aparate de tip slot machine modernizate, pentru toate gusturile și dorințele de joc.

Istorie

În For your eyes only (1981), Bond se întâlneşte cu Kristatos la Casino Corfu. După un joc de Chemin de fer (Baccarat) unde Bond, în mod evident, câştigă, el şi Kristatos servesc cina la restaurantul cazinoului. Momentele scenei au fost filmate în locul unde mai târziu urma să apară Casino Corfu cel real, adăpostit în Palatul Achilleion din Gastouri.

Palatul Achiellon a fost construit în 1890 de împărăteasă Austriei, Elisabeta de Bavaria, legendara prințesă Sissy. Acesta a fost construit iniţial ca reședință de vară, fiind proiectat cu tema centrală a eroului Ahile. Mai multe statui ale lui Ahile pot fi găsite în grădina palatului. Elisabeta a vizitat palatul până la decesul ei, care a avut loc în Geneva în 1898. După moartea acesteia, Kaiserul German, Wilhelm al II-lea, a cumpărat Achilleon în 1907 şi l-a folosit ca reședință de vară. În această perioadă o mare parte din activitatea diplomatică a avut loc în Achilleon şi palatul a devenit un centru al diplomaţiei europene.

Scena din restaurant a fost filmată în spatele palatului. Locurile nu s-au schimbat prea mult şi încă veți putea recunoaşte gresia în culori alb-negru care acoperă total partea din spate. Statuile mici filmate în prim-plan sunt încă aici.

Kaiserul Wilhelm a vizitat palatul până în 1914, respectiv începutul primului război mondial. În timpul războiului, palatul a fost folosit ca spital militar şi după război a devenit proprietatea statului grec, conform Tratatului de la Versailles. Acesta a fost folosit apoi pentru a găzdui diverse servicii guvernamentale şi în timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial puterile Axei au folosit locația pe post de comandament militar.

Casino Corfu este primul cazino postbelic care a funcționat pe teritoriul grecesc. Acesta a fost deschis pentru prima dată în 1962 în clădirea istorică Achilleon, închiriată pe 20 de ani printr-un contract cu o companie germană. Compania a preluat reconstrucţia şi restaurarea lui Achilleon şi a adunat o mulţime de obiecte şi opere de artă pierdute şi vândute care decorau palatul. Contractul de închiriere a încetat în 1983 şi proprietatea a revenit Organizaţiei Elene de Turism (E.O.T.).

În 1988 E.O.T. (Hellenic Tourist Properties S.A.) a decis  să mute cazinoul în Corfu Holiday Palace Hotel. Motivul din spatele acestei decizii a fost acela de a atrage jucători de nivel superior. În 1991, după intervenția de la reședința Gastrouri, cazinoul funcţiona atât la Palatul Achilleon cât şi în hotelul Corfu Holiday Palace, iar un an mai târziu acesta a continuat să funcţioneze exclusiv în grădinile hotelului. În anul 2000 administraţia şi obiectele de proprietate ale lui Casino Corfu au fost transferate către Greek Tourism Development Co.
