This name is similar in the online gaming world to the Bodog brand. But over time, Calvin Ayre has joined other descriptions to his name: economic offender, general pursuer, philanthropist, animal lover, as well as to crazy parties and beautiful women. This is Calvin Ayre, a controversial, flamboyant character, who lives his life to the fullest, as in a movie.
A few pages will not be enough now to present his life, but we will try to synthesize the way we can his rich biography.
The beginning of Calvin Ayre’s story
Calvin Edward Ayre was born in 1961 on a farm near Lloydminster, a small town on the border of the Canadian states of Alberta and Saskatchewan. To Calvin, his father was a real hero. Pig breeder and wheat cultivator, his father taught him the meaning of hard work and profits earned with sweat.
After a while, they moved to British Columbia, where he attended high school. Heavy living conditions still did not allow his family to send him to college and, then, to the university, but it would happen as soon as Ayre found his entrepreneurial spirit. He rented a truck, filled it with fruit from British Columbia and took him to Saskatchewan, where he sold all the merchandise and so he got the money he needed to pay his studies at the University of Waterloo in 1984, where he obtained a diploma in General Sciences, and, 5 years later, an MBA at the University of Seattle, where he graduated Finances Management.
Once his education has become complete, Calvin hired in 1990, at Bicer Medical Systems. The company had financial difficulties. In an attempt to keep the company afloat, he was accused of moving the company’s shares without submitting the appropriate documents and he, also, sold 300.000 shares without issuing a prospectus. He was never criminally charged, but, in 1996, he was fined 10.000 dollars and he was banned from running a company listed on the Vancouver Stock Exchange for 20 years. Over the years, he described this event as one in which “I know, I did not follow all the rules (…)” and “Yes, I obviously made certain mistakes, but it was not a criminal activity and no one has suffered following my actions (…)”.
After this episode, Ayre moved to Vancouver in the early 1990s and started several companies that were related to the phenomenon that was about to explode: the internet.
Bodog
Bodog is an online gambling company created by Ayre in 1994 and he has not chosen a name that resonates in the gaming world because he thought at this brand / name as being one that could also be easily moved to other areas that are not necessarily related to gambling. He has chosen a six-letter name to make it easy to remember and pronounce.
With Ayre in leadership, Bodog quickly became one of the world’s leading online gambling companies, reaching thousands of employees and “spinning businesses worth billions”, culminating with Calvin’s being on Forbes magazine’s Cover in 2006, in their special edition dedicated to billionaires. In the same year, 2006, he decided to move the company’s headquarters from Costa Rica to Antigua. At that time, besides online gambling, Bodog had become an international brand (as he had planned), recognized in several areas: music – Bodog Music, fights – Bodog Fight MMA, poker – Bodog.com Poker, including marketing conferences in sports, held in Vegas, coffee sales and Reality TV.
As an online gambling company, Bodog had its best period between 2000 and 2006. All the time, the company has been aggressive in communication, and Ayre has always been its image and its spokesperson. This has brought him a great reputation and popularity among American players, and the site has grown sharply. Besides betting, the site has been added a Casino button and then a poker room, making it become a “one stop shop” for anyone who wants to have fun online.
What a lot of people do not know is that Ayre (which, in the meantime, developed his ability to work with computers) was the one who wrote the site’s original code. This has always allowed him to have an edge over competition, managing to change the design and site features faster than those in competition.
Bodog has been unfortunately presented as a place where you can quickly enrich and then live high, and Calvin’s extravagant and expansive personality made everything look veritable.
Other activities related to other areas of gambling were also started at that time, as it was a show called Calvin Ayre WildCard Poker, which started off at the end of 2005, at Fox Sports Net, where both professional players and celebrities sit at the same poker table, sharing the same passion.
Until 2005, Bodog was responsible for processing over one million bets per day. In the same year, the estimated earnings were 210 million dollars. Ayre’s personal image explodes during this period, making him a recognizable personality everywhere, from appearances on the covers of business magazines to appearances in TV programs, such as Nightline and MTV Cribs.
That period was sweet and unforgettable for Calvin. Începutul poveștii lui Calvin Ayre
Calvin Edward Ayre s-a născut în 1961 într-o fermă de lângă Lloydminster, un mic oraș de la granița statelor canadiene Alberta și Saskatchewan. Pentru Calvin tatăl său a fost un adevărat erou. Crescător de porci și cultivator de grâu, tatăl său l-a învățat ce înseamnă munca grea și profitul câștigat cu sudoare.
După o vreme s-au mutat în British Columbia unde a făcut liceul. Condițiile grele de viață nu-i permiteau încă familiei să-l trimită la colegiu și apoi la facultate, dar se va întâmpla imediat ce Ayre își va descoperi spiritual său antreprenorial. A închiriat un camion, l-a umplut cu fructe din British Columbia și l-a dus in Saskatchewan unde a vândut toată marfa și așa a ajuns să facă rost de bani necesari pentru a-și plăti studiile de la Universitatea din Waterloo în anul 1984, unde a obținut o dilomă în Științe Generale, iar 5 ani mai târziu un MBA la Universitatea din Seattle unde a absolvit Managementul Finanțelor.
Odată ce educația sa a devenit completă Calvin s-a angajat în 1990 la Bicer Medical Systems. Compania avea dificultăți financiare. A ales un nume din 6 litere pentru a putea fi ușor de reținut și de pronunțat.
Cu Ayre l-a conducere Bodog a devenit rapid una dintre cele mai importante companii de gambling online din lume, ajungând la mii de angajați și “învârtind afaceri de miliarde”, culminând cu apariția lui Calvin pe Coperta lui Forbes în anul 2006, în ediția lor specială dedicată miliardarilor. În același an, 2006, decide să mute sediul companiei din Costa Rica în Antigua. În acea vreme, pe lângă online gambling, Bodog devenise un brand internațional (așa cum plănuise) recunoscut în mai multe domenii: muzică – Bodog Music, lupte – Bodog Fight MMA, poker – Bodog.com Poker, inclusiv conferințe de marketing în sport desfășurate în Vegas, vânzări de cafea și Reality tv.
Bodog ca și companie de online gambling a avut cea mai bună perioadă a sa între anii 2000 și 2006. Tot timpul compania a fost agresivă în comunicare, iar Ayre a fost mereu imaginea și purtătorul ei de cuvânt. Asta i-a adus un renume și o popularitate foarte mare printre jucătorii americani, iar site-ul a crescut vertiginos. Ce nu cunoaște foarte multă lume este faptul că Ayre (care între timp își dezvoltase abilitatea de a lucra cu computerele) a fost cel care a scris codul inițial al site-ului. Acest lucru i-a permis mereu să aibă un avantaj față de concurență reușind să schimbe design-ul și funcțiile site-ului mai repede ca cei din concurență.

Imaginea personală a lui Ayre explodează în această perioadă, făcîndu-l o persoană recognoscibilă peste tot, de la apariții pe coperțile revistelor de afaceri și până la apariția în programe tv de genul Nightline și MTV Cribs.
