In the following interview we give you a man who entire being is dedicated to poker. He is Andrei Simon, a professional poker player. Andrei, does not only play the game, but he is alsoa co-owner of the Gentlemen’s Club of Poker, along with 3 other friends, Club which has opened on 11 October 2013.

 Who is Andrei Simon?

First of all I consider myself a professional poker player and than an investor. Shortly put a poker enthusiast.

 Please tell us when did you start to play poker?

I began to play Poker in early 2006. It has fascinated me from right on the spot, and I can say that since then I continuously study the game with the same determination.

 Please tell us a few things about your poker background?

I played SNG for several months, and when I had a bankroll of some kind, I switched to cash. After that I continued playing for a few years, becoming a regular at 400NLH.

Then the monotony pushed me towards online tournaments with cash and live tournaments, where I was successful.

I play cash games and live and online tournaments now (he laughs).

 What is poker for you?

Poker became quickly more than a hobby. In conjunction with my structural thinking which resulted from my computer science studies, deepening Poker has disciplined me even more in other areas of my life also. If you understand poker at a certain level, you start to think in EV (expected value) whenever you must make any decision, which must be good in the long-term. So, I can say that I owe a lot to the game of poker.

 How much time do you invest in poker daily?

Poker and activities related to it „take up” most of my time. Except for the hours spent with my family or friends, almost everything revolves around the world  of poker.

 What are your favorite types of poker? Which one do you enjoy playing more?

My favorite poker type and one I have studied most is Texas Holdem, but recently I have  also tryed out Omaha Pot Limit.

 What do you enjoy more, live or online poker ? Do you prefer tournaments or cash games?

If I had to choose, I would play almost only at big live tournaments, like the EPT. I love competition and probably all the excitements that come with a big tournament. But I would also play cash  live for beautiful stakes, anytime.

However, even though the games have become more difficult, I believe that the online-cash type is the best decision, mathematically speaking (win rate estimated per hour of play). It is the hardest, but once you’re up the reward is on level. The only problem is the monotony and you’re tired of sitting you’re entire life in front of a computer (he laughs).

 Poker has become a phenomenon in the world as well as in Romania; are there any differences between our country and the rest of the world?

Without exception, Poker has grown in Romania also, as elsewhere. This game is too good to be stopped by someone or something.

 How do you comment on the future of Poker considering the legislative changes (in Romania and in the world) as well as from the point of view of the fields of players, which become more experienced?

 Very important steps were took for the regulation of Live Poker in Romania. There are small problems, but they will be resolved with time. Fot the online area there is still alot to be done and I hope that in a few years we will be able to play online again, with players from every corner of the world.

 The number of experienced players increases, but the same goes for the number of beginners. A professional player will have no problems in this century. Finally, let us not forget that poker means entertainment and let us not forget that poker comes with emotions/excitement.

 You are co-owner of poker club named Gentlemen’s Poker Club, from Timisoara. Please tell us more about it. When did you open? What tournaments have you organized so far? How many tables do you have? What is the schedule of tournaments? Any other details you would like to mention are welcome.

 On October 11th, me together with 3 of my friends, have opened the club. We have 10 tables and soon we will add a VIP room with a new table. 

We organize daily cash tables with different stakes and tournaments from 20 to 200 RON and monthly we have a big tournament with a buy-in of 500 lei. We also hope to organize a larger international tournament soon, because our "geopolitical" standings it is in our advantage. Let’s see if they pass the law regarding the famous 25% tax, which keeps the foreign organizers away from Romania.

 Which are your strengths when you find yourself at the game table?

Experience, discipline, attention and patience.

What should a poker player do in order to obtain important results on a constant basis?

One should not stop studying and one should also treat earnestly any other aspect of his life – like his health (nutrition, sports, mental), his social life (family, friends). In the same way that poker teaches us, we have to be balanced and we should think things in the long run, by making the best decisions.

Where do you place poker in regard to your plans for the future? Where can I place it, if I breathe poker?! (he laughs). I want to start by playing more, and by playing more carefully, etc. I consider myself at the beginning of my career and I am convinced that the great results will start to come.

 Which is your favorite poker player and why?

I do not have a favorite poker player, not really. I respect many professional players and I try to take the best from each of them.

What would you advise the young people who want to take up poker?

They should be hard workers and they should be aware that everything is up to them. Poker is relatively simple; the materials are available to anyone. They should just be willing to study and then they must be disciplined enough to apply what they learn. Easier said than done, that’s for sure (he laughs).

 Do you have other passions besides poker? How do you spend your free time?

Poker has dimmed my other hobbies (movies, sports), due to the lack of time.

I like to read personal development materials (nutrition, money, etc.), I like sports, listening to music, to go out with my friends or my girlfriend. I try to do this things more often, but I rarely succeed.

 Cine este Andrei Simon?

Mă consider în primul rând un jucător profesionist de poker și apoi investitor. În câteva cuvinte, un pasionat de poker.

 Te rugăm să ne spui când ai început să joci poker?

Poker am început să joc la începutul anului 2006. M-a fascinat din prima și de atunci pot spune că studiez jocul cu aceeași determinare.

 Te rog să ne spui câteva lucruri despre backgroundul tău pokeristic de până acum?

Pentru câteva luni am jucat SNG-uri, iar când s-a legat cât decât un bankroll  am trecut la cash. Am jucat apoi cash câțiva ani ajungând regular la 400NLH.Apoi din monotonie am trecut cu succes pe turnee online cu reprize de cash și turnee live. Acum joc cash și turnee, live și online (râde).

Ce reprezintă pokerul pentru tine?

Pokerul a devenit repede mai mult decât un hobby. Coroborat cu gândirea structurală dată de studiile în informatică, aprofundarea pokerului m-a disciplinat și mai mult și în restul domeniilor vieții. Dacă înțelegi pokerul la un anumit nivel, începi să gândești în EV (expected value) orice decizie, să fie bună pe termen lung. Deci, pot spune că datorez pokerului multe.  

Cât timp îți ocupă pokerul zilnic?

Pokerul și activitățile conexe lui îmi „ocupă” majoritatea timpului. Exceptând orele petrecute cu familia sau prietenii aproape totul se învârte în lumea pokerului. 

Care sunt tipurile de poker preferate? Care dintre ele îți place să le joci mai mult?

Tipul de poker preferat și pe care l-am studiat cel mai mult este Texas Holdem, dar mai nou am tatonat puțin și Omaha Pot Limit.

Îți place mai mult pokerul live sau online? Preferi turneele sau jocurile cash?

Dacă ar fi să aleg, aș juca aproape doar turnee live mari, gen EPT. Îmi place mult competiția și probabil toate trăirile ce ți le oferă un turneu mare. Dar și cash live pe mize frumoase aș juca oricând.

Totuși, chiar dacă jocurile au devenit mai grele, sunt de părere că online-cash este cea mai bună decizie matematic vorbind (winrate estimat pe ora de joc). Este și cel mai greu domeniu, dar odată ajuns sus recompensa este pe măsură. Singura problemă e că intervine monotonia și te saturi să stai în fața calculatorului o viață (râde).

Pokerul a devenit un fenomen atât în lume cât și în România, există diferențe între țara noastră și restul lumii?

Fără excepție, pokerul a crescut și în România, ca peste tot. Este prea frumos acest joc încât să îl poată opri cineva sau ceva.

Cum comentezi viitorul pokerului având în vedere schimbările legislative (în România și în lume) cât şi din punctul de vedere al field-urilor de jucători care devin tot mai experimentaţi?

Au fost făcuți pași foarte mari în România pentru reglementarea pokerului Live. Mai sunt mici probleme, dar se rezolvă în timp. Online mai este de lucru și sper ca în câțiva ani să putem juca din nou online cu jucători din orice colț al lumii.

Numărul jucătorilor experimentați crește, dar la fel se întâmplă și cu numărul începătorilor. Nu o să fie probleme pentru un profesionist în secolul acesta. Până la urmă, să nu uităm că pokerul înseamnă și divertisment și să nu uităm că în poker apar emoțiile.

Ești co-proprietarul clubului de pokerGentlemen’s Poker Club din Timișoara. Te rog să ne spui mai multe lucruri despre el. Când ați deschis? Ce turnee ați organizat până acum? Câte mese de joc aveți? Care este programul de turnee? Alte detalii pe care dorești să le amintești sunt bine-venite.

Împreună cu 3 prieteni am deschis clubul în 11 octombrie. Avem 10 mese și în curând adăugăm o sală VIP cu o nouă masă. Organizăm zilnic mese de cash cu mize diverse, iar turnee de la 20 lei la 200 lei și lunar un turneu mai mare de 500 lei. În curând sperăm să facem și un turneu internațional mai mare, deoarece poziționarea „geopolitică” ne avantajează. Mai rămâne să treacă legea cu vestitul impozit de 25% care ține și organizatorii străini departe de România.

Care consideri că sunt punctele tale forte la masa de joc?

Experiența, atenția, disciplina și răbdarea.

Ce ar trebui să facă un jucător de poker ca să obțină rezultate importante în mod constant?

Să nu se oprească din studiu și să trateze cu seriozitate și alte aspecte ale vieții – gen sănătate (nutriție, sport, mental), socializare (familie, prieteni). Cum ne învață pokerul, trebuie să fim balansați și să gândim pe termen lung, alegând deciziile optime.

Unde poziționezi pokerul în planurile tale de viitor?

Unde îl pot poziționa când respir poker?! (râde). Vreau să încep să joc mai mult, să joc mai atent, etc. Mă consider la început de carieră și sunt convins că rezultatele mari o să apară.

Care este jucătorul tău de poker preferat şi de ce?

Nu prea am jucător preferat. Respect mulți jucători profesioniști și încerc să iau de la fiecare ce e mai bun.

Ce sfaturi ai da tinerilor care doresc să se apuce de poker?

Să fie muncitori și să fie conștienți că totul ține de ei. Pokerul este relativ simplu, materialele sunt la îndemâna oricui. Trebuie doar să fii dispus să studiezi și apoi să ai disciplina să aplici. Mai ușor de zis decât de făcut, ce-i drept (râde).

Mai ai și alte pasiuni în afară de poker? Cum îți petreci timpul liber?

Pokerul a cam estompat alte pasiuni (pescuitul, sport), din lipsa de timp. Îmi place să citesc pe tema dezvoltării personale (nutriție, bani, etc), să fac sport, să ascult muzică, să ies în oraș cu prietena sau prietenii. Încerc mai des, reușesc mai rar.
