Hailing from Buzau, Adrian Mihalache made a splash in 2009 by cashing a pot of 52.500 US dollars. For our magazine, Adrian tells today the story of its beginnings in poker, his future plans and especially the time he spents at the game table…

Which was your first contact with poker?

I’ve been playing poker since childhood, I learned it from my father, but I was playing the Poker 5 Draw which was really popular in Romania. I discovered Texas Hold’Em about 5 years ago by chance, on a website.  I liked it so much that I played it for an year, almost 10 hours a day. I wasn’t making too much money, I was mostly playing freerolls and on very low bets. In that period I learned to play very well.

What are your likes and dislikes about poker?

I like it because it is a complex game. In order to become a good poker player you need to possess  lots of qualities. First of all, I believe that all good poker players have an above average IQ. Patience and the self control have the same importance. All these advantages are crucial.

How would you describe your poker player profile and what is the advantage you are counting on?

I believe that,  in nowadays poker, experience is the most important advantage. Every day more and more good players come to light, so experience makes the difference. Everywhere, in every live tournament I participate, I see young players, really aggressive, which know the game really well. But most of them make mistakes due to lack of experience. As a good friend of mine is saying, these are players which “only have accelerator without having any breaks”.

What are you focusing more on- online or live poker?

Until now, I had my best results at online poker. I enjoy very much to play it live, as well. At live tournaments, I’m lacking experience. Anyway, taking into account the last events that took place in online poker (I’m referring mostly to Black Friday), I believe that in the future more and more professional players are going to focus on live poker.

Can poker be considered a lifestyle for you?

I’m living exclusively from poker since approximately four years ago and it is actually a lifestyle for me. Whenever I want to schedule something for the next day, I know that from X hour toY hour I’m going to play poker and I know exactly what spare time I am left with for other activities. I mean, I don’t place other things above poker. It is however a nice life. I’ve been to lots of places all around Europe, the Romanian community of poker players is pretty numerous, you meet a lot of people… Plus, in the end, the biggest satisfaction you get is by far the financial gain.

What does a poker player need in order to get notable results at international level?

I cannot give an exact answer to this question because I am not a player with very good international results. I was however very happy for Anton Ionel, the Romanian player with the best results in live tournaments. It is clear that he is a completely different player from the majority of professional players. But, in the end, the results are more important.

Who is the international poker player that you admire the most and why? What about the Romanian players?

I like very much Tom Dwan. I believe that he is the only player which, in the last few years, became one of the best without benefiting from the help of any poker site. When he signed the contract with Full Tilt, he was already among the best and he was playing at the same level with Ivey or Antonius. From Romania, I appreciate Cristian Dragomir, Mihai Manole, Alin Medesan. I had lots of times the opportunity to play with them and they really are very good players.

What does your life look like when you’re not sitting at a poker table?

I’m spending very few days of my life away from poker. This mostly happens when I’m at home. I like to play football, I hang out in pubs… On the other hand, when I’m at tournaments, I play poker 10 to 12 hours a day.

Which are your poker-related goals for the next years?

I believe that all the Romanian players will have to make a change in their lives in the near future. From my information, a law regarding online gambling will be voted this fall, after which it will be very difficult for professional players to play online. From my point of view, I’m ready for any change. I’m moving this month to Italy, where I’m planning to live for a few years. The Italiens regulated the online poker system for about two years now and I will be able to play relaxed. Plus, live games in Italy are the best I’ve participated in.Buzoianul Adrian Mihalache a rupt gura târgului în 2009, încasând un pot de 52,500 de dolari.
