Is it true that you have a friend, who knows a guy, who lives next to that professional punter that all your friends are talking about? Don’t ask me how I know that!
There’s a lot of talk about betting, about specialists, and about professionals. But where are all these professionals? When you use this word, you need to be fully aware of its meaning. We can call someone who makes a living exclusively out of betting a professional. But that doesn’t mean that a student who makes some extra cash from sports betting deserves the same title. I hope you get the gist of it…
There are many myths about professional punters. People talk about them, have opinions on the subject, but there are actually very few people who indeed know such a person. So, let’s face it: professional punters are a rare breed. I actually believe that there are more Ferraris in Romania (their number has recently been chalked up to 189 cars) than gamblers who live exclusively from betting winnings.
Do you think I’m exaggerating? Let me ask you – do you know anybody like that? How certain are you of what he’s saying to you, of the time he actually spends doing this, of the truth of the stories you’ve heard? Let’s talk about the reasons why it’s so hard to be a professional punter these days.
Nobody really wants to teach you how to win
The truth is that, aside from your own family, nobody wants to help you become successful at sports betting, not to mention share any professional secrets with you. Not the agencies, nor the specialized websites, or the sports press…. nobody! The answer to the question of “why not?” is as simple as it gets: because all of those above win whenever you lose.
Those who have the know-how, the money, the time, the infrastructure, the human resources and the partners needed to function in this field don’t really have anything to win by introducing more people to this circle. There’s only so much to gain, and the more people involved, the smaller the winnings. Nobody wants to share the bread. You get it, right?
Think about how the agencies built their empires on the backs of brilliant minds, who never were and never will be willing to share their genius with anyone for free. So, don’t expect to find any free (or even at a price of, say, 50 euros) software or books that could make you a winner, because there’s no such thing.
You need a lot of money, time and perhaps even employees or partners
The truth is that there are a lot of easier ways to make money than sports betting, even if most punters give the illusion that it’s really all up to them, and that they will always be successful as long as they really strive for it and have enough money.
But things just don’t work like that. In order to be successful at betting in the long run, and to possibly make a living out of it, you need a lot of different things. The bank is important, true, but, aside from that, you also need a lot of time, work, devotion, availability, perseverance, a strong psyche and many other people who will help you, one way or the other.
And the funny thing is that most of the people who manage to put together everything they need in order to take this step, career-wise, end up realizing that there are other simpler, safer and more profitable ways of making the money they need, which makes most of them give up sports betting in order to pursue other types of business.
The psychological effect can be devastating
So, even if you do have all the resources and the perfect context that we already talked about, you will soon notice that this lifestyle also comes with a great deal of stress, that comes in a completely disorganized fashion, and at times that are impossible to anticipate.
Not anyone is cut out to be a successful punter. Even if you are good at sports, you have the network, the money, a team of skilled programmers, experience, and so on and so forth, you will still hit these emotional bumps, that might eventually force you to ask yourself: “Why am I trying to do this instead of anything else? Do I need all this disappointment? Is all this worth ruining my mood all the time, and living on the edge most of my life?”
One of the punters I know – who make, on a monthly basis, around twice the medium wage (aside from their actual jobs) – told me that he constantly thinks about quitting, precisely because of this hassle. Quoting from my memory, his words sounded something like: “It’s horrible for your psyche. Even if I’ve been constantly making a profit for years, month after month, no exception, I still wouldn’t advise anyone to choose this path. For no other reason than that it’s very hard, on a psychological level. I’m tired of being angry, frustrated, of suffering from mood swings, even at times when I’m out with my friends, my girlfriend etc.”
Arbitrage is becoming increasingly difficult
Indeed, there are more “traders” than professional punters these days. But not even this is easy to practice in the long run.
In theory, it’s a good business: you find quotas that come at a profit of at least 0.5%, regardless of the results, you bet on two such games daily and make a 1% profit per day, which means making a 30% profit per month. So, hey, why not sell your apartment in order to have some start-up cash, than in less than 4 months you can buy yourself a new apartment, and, soon, you can leave peacefully for the rest of your life, by making hassle-free constant money, after which, why not move to your own super-yacht?
Well, things aren’t as simple as they once were. There are steps being taken to eradicate this “job”. And in many countries, gambling regulations limited the numbers of operators, and are still constantly changing. So operators are increasingly more willing to collaborate, in order to identify money launderers and cheaters or those who profit from the different quotas on the market.

Nu-i așa că ai un prieten, care are un amic, care-l cunoaște pe acel băiat, care este vecin cu pariorul profesionist despre care se vorbește în cercul tău de camarazi? Nu mă întreba de unde știu asta!
Se vorbește mult despre pariuri, despre specialiști și despre profesioniști. Unde sunt însă acei profesioniști? Când folosim termenul profesionist trebuie să fim în clar și cu semnificația lui. Putem spune că un individ care se întreține practicând exclusiv această profesie se numește profesionist. Asta nu înseamnă că un student care face ocazional rost de bani de buzunar din pariuri sportive poate deține respectiva titulatură. Mă rog, sper că ai înțeles ideea….
Există nenumărate mituri despre pariorii profesioniști. Lumea vorbește despre ei, își dă cu părerea, dar numărul celor care chiar cunosc în mod personal un astfel de exemplar este foarte, foarte mic. Până la urmă, trebuie să recunoaștem că pariorii profesioniști reprezintă o raritate. De altfel, sunt convins că există mai multe Ferrari-uri în România (ultimele cifre spun că avem 189 de exemplare) decât pariori care să trăiască exclusiv din câștigurile obținute de jocuri de noroc.
Crezi că exagerez? Spune-mi ceva, cunoști vreunul? Cât de sigur ești de ceea ce-ți spune, de cât timp face asta, ai vreo dovadă sau certitudine vizavi de poveștile pe care le crezi? Să discutăm puțin despre motivele pentru care este atât de greu să fii parior profesionist în zilele noastre.
Nimeni nu vrea, de fapt, să te învețe să câștigi
Realitatea este că, în afară de familia ta, nimeni nu vrea ca tu să câștigi la pariuri sportive, ca să nu mai vorbim despre dezvăluirea unor secrete profesionale. Nici agențiile, nici site-urile de specialitate, nici ziarele de sport… nimeni! Răspunsul la întrebarea „De ce?” este cât se poate de simplu: pentru că toate entitățile enumerate mai sus câștigă în momentele în care tu pierzi.
Cei care au cunoștințele, banii, timpul, infrastructura, personalul și partenerii necesari bunei funcționări în această nișă nu au interesul să introducă pe nimeni în circuit. Se împarte o singură pâine la nivel global, din care vin să ciugulească toți porumbeii. Cu cât sunt mai mulți, cu atât mănâncă mai puțin. E limpede?
Gândește-te că agențiile și-au clădit imperiul pe spatele unor minți strălucite, care nu au fost și nu vor fi niciodată dispuse să dezvăluie sclipirile de geniu în mod gratuit. Așadar, nu te aștepta să găsești nici gratis și nici în schimbul a 50 de Euro un soft sau o carte care să te transforme într-un câștigător, pentru că pur și simplu așa ceva nu există.
Ai nevoie de foarte mulți bani, timp și eventual angajați sau parteneri
Realitatea este că sunt multe alte lucruri mai la îndemână și mai ușoare din care se pot face bani decât pariurile sportive, chiar dacă iluzia pe care o au majoritatea pasionaților este că, de fapt, totul depinde de ei și că pot avea succes dacă își dau silința și dacă vor pune mână pe o sumă consistentă de bani.
Lucrurile stau însă cu totul și cu totul altfel. Pentru a avea succes pe termen lung la pariuri și pentru a trăi dintr-o astfel de activitate este nevoie de foarte multe lucruri. Banca este importantă, dar pe lângă asta, este nevoie și de multă muncă, timp, devotament, disponibilitate, seriozitate, de un psihic foarte puternic și de alți oameni care să te ajute, într-un fel sau altul.
Și culmea este că, majoritatea celor care ajung să aibă tot ceea ce credeau că le trebuie pentru a face pasul spre această carieră, ajung să conștientizeze că există multe alte modalități mai simple, mai sigure și mai profitabile prin care pot câștiga banii pe care și-i doresc, fapt pentru care cei mai mulți dintre ei renunță la pariuri sportive în detrimentul altor tipuri de business.
Efectul psihologic poate fi devastator
Chiar dacă dispui de toate resursele și conjuncturile favorabile despre care am vorbit, vei vedea că acest stil de viață include și doze foarte mari de stres, care-ți sunt administrate într-o manieră total dezorganizată și al căror timing este imposibil de anticipat.
Nu oricine este făcut pentru a putea fi un parior de succes. Chiar dacă te pricepi la sport, chiar dacă ai conexiuni, capital, o echipă de programatori pricepuți în spate, experiență și așa mai departe, te vei lovi de încercările emoționale, care s-ar putea să te determine să-ți pui niște întrebări de genul: „De ce încerc eu să fac asta și nu fac altceva? Oare am nevoie de atâtea dezamăgiri? Oare merită să-mi stric starea de spirit atât de des și să trăiesc cu palpitații mare parte din timp?”
Unul dintre pariorii pe care îi cunosc – care câștigă lunar din pariuri în jur de echivalentul a două salarii medii (pe lângă jobul principal), mi-a spus că de multe ori se gândește să se lase, tocmai din cauza acestor bătăi de cap. Citând din memorie, cuvintele lui au sunat cam așa: „Te rupe psihic. Chiar dacă fac profit constant de câțiva ani buni, lună de lună, fără excepții, tot nu aș sfătui pe nimeni să o ia pe această cale. Este foarte, foarte greu din punct de vedere psihic, nu altceva. M-am săturat să fiu nervos, frustrat, să-mi schimb starea de spirit brusc, poate chiar când sunt cu prietenii, cu prietena, etc.”
Este din ce în ce mai greu să faci arbitrage
Într-adevăr, există mai mulți „traderi” decât pariori profesioniști în zilele noastre. Totuși, nici această ocupație nu mai este atât de ușor de pus în practică, cu succes, pe termen lung.
În teorie, sună bine: găsești cote care să-ți asigure un profit de măcar 0.5% indiferent de rezultat, prinzi două astfel de meciuri zilnic și practic obții un profit 1% pe zi, ceea ce înseamnă un profit de 30% pe lună. Adică, glumind, poți să-ți vinzi apartamentul pentru a avea un capital consistent de pornire, după care vei face bani de unul nou în mai puțin de 4 luni și ulterior, vei putea să trăiești liniștit tot restul vieții, câștigând bani pe bandă rulantă și eventual, în câțiva ani, de ce să nu-ți muți reședința pe un Superyacht?
Ei bine, lucrurile nu mai sunt atât de simple cum erau odată. Se fac demersuri pentru a estompa această „meserie”. În foarte multe țări s-au reglementat pariurile online, s-a limitat numărul operatorilor și legislația este într-o continuă schimbare. Operatorii colaborează din ce în ce mai mult, tocmai pentru a-i depista pe cei care vor să spele bani, să trucheze meciuri sau să profite de pe urma diferențelor dintre cotele oferite pe piață.
